How to Spot Fake Maison Margiela: 8 Checks Before You Buy

Maison Margiela is copied often, because its main mark is just four white stitches and a blank label. That makes it easy to fake badly and hard to fake well. These are the checks we use at Coveti before any piece in the Maison Margiela collection leaves us.

Quick answer

  • Check the four stitches: fine white cotton, slightly uneven, visible from both sides.
  • Check the label: plain white, cleanly cut, with the stitches through each corner.
  • Check the style code on the care label against the seller's listing.
  • Check the fabric and where it is made: most ready-to-wear is made in Italy.
  • Buy from the brand, an authorised stockist and a retailer that authenticates every piece.

1. The four stitches

Real stitches are hand sewn in a matte white cotton thread, a little irregular, and they go through the fabric. Fakes often use thick, shiny thread, perfectly even machine stitches and stitches that only sit on the surface. See what the four stitches mean.

2. The blank label

On most ready-to-wear the label is plain white cotton with no printing. If it has the numbers 0 to 23, one number is circled to show the line. Wrong numbers, blurred print and a label glued instead of stitched are warning signs.

3. The care label and style code

The care label at the side seam lists the composition, the country of manufacture and a style code. On genuine stock the code matches the product. Coveti prints it in the Product Details table on every page, for example on the Virgin Wool Double-Breasted Coat in Black.

4. The fabric

Margiela uses virgin wool, cashmere, silk satin and heavy Italian denim. A coat that feels thin and a shirt that feels synthetic are worth questioning. Check the composition against the listing; the Cashmere Coat in Dark Blue should feel like cashmere.

5. Where it is made

Most current Maison Margiela ready-to-wear is labelled Made in Italy, with a few pieces made in France. Of the 221 pieces Coveti is adding this season, 202 say Made in Italy.

6. The construction

Deconstruction is deliberate, not sloppy. Raw edges on a real piece are even and stable; fakes fray unevenly. Taped seams, like those on the Taped Slip Dress in Black, sit flat and straight.

7. The price

New-season Maison Margiela is a luxury price. A brand-new coat at a fraction of the usual price is almost always a copy.

8. The seller

Buy from Maison Margiela, its authorised stockists and retailers that inspect every item. Every piece sold by Coveti is 100% authentic and checked before dispatch.
