Oscar de la Renta ready-to-wear is the house’s main collection: the gowns, cocktail dresses, day dresses, knitwear, separates and coats it sells in standard sizes each season, as distinct from its made-to-order bridal and its accessories. Coveti carries more than 345 Oscar de la Renta ready-to-wear pieces, and this guide explains how the collection is built and where to start.

For the house itself, read who is Oscar de la Renta?. For pricing, see the Oscar de la Renta price guide.

At a glance

  • What it is: the seasonal collection sold in standard sizes, separate from bridal and accessories.
  • Signatures: florals and botanical prints, embroidery and beading, faille and silk for evening, fine wool knits for day.
  • Seasons: four a year, Spring, Pre-Fall, Fall and Resort, plus a permanent line of knit essentials.
  • Sizing: US sizes, shown on Coveti in UK sizes. Knits come in letters.
  • Made in: mostly Italy, with some pieces made in the United States and India.

How the collection is built

Oscar de la Renta founded his label in New York in 1965, and evening has always been the core of the house. The ready-to-wear still reads that way. Each season opens with gowns and cocktail dresses in faille, silk chiffon, tulle and guipure lace, then widens into day dresses in cotton poplin and wool, fine knits, skirts, blouses and tailoring. Prints carry across categories, so a floral from the gowns often turns up again on a poplin day dress, a silk blouse and a cardigan in the same season.

The house also keeps a small permanent collection of knit essentials, the wool, silk and cashmere tank, cardigan and bolero, which it reissues in black, navy and ivory rather than changing each season. These are the easiest place to start.

Gowns

Full-length evening dresses are what the house is known for. Expect hand embroidery, beading, fringe and structured faille. The full edit lives in Oscar de la Renta gowns.

How to choose your first piece

Start with the occasion. For black tie, go to the gowns. For a wedding, a guipure lace cocktail dress and a printed faille both work for the ceremony and the dinner. For everyday, a wool-blend cardigan from the permanent collection is the piece you will wear most. Oscar de la Renta cuts its ready-to-wear to US sizes, and Coveti lists every piece on the UK ladder: a US 2 is a UK 6, a US 6 a UK 10 and a US 10 a UK 14. Knits and some separates come in letter sizes from XXS to XXL. Read the Oscar de la Renta size guide before you order.
