0

Oscar de la Renta prices at Coveti run from $630 for an enamel key chain to $48,700 for a fully beaded halter gown, at the time of writing. A typical day dress costs about $6,310, a cocktail dress about $14,680 and an evening gown about $15,200. Ready-to-wear separates start at $1,662.

Those figures are not estimates. We priced every Oscar de la Renta piece live on Coveti this week, 303 styles once duplicate listings are set aside, and sorted them by category. The table below gives the lowest price, the typical price (the median, so one spectacular gown does not drag the average up) and the highest price in each group, with the actual piece at each end. Prices are in US dollars and correct at the time of writing; they move as new seasons land and older pieces sell through.

Where a category has an even number of styles, the typical figure sits between the two middle prices, which is why a few of them read “about”. Everything else is a price you can find on a real product page.

How much is an Oscar de la Renta dress?

It depends on which kind of dress you mean, and the gap between the three is wide.

Day dresses: roughly $3,900 to $10,700

The day dress is where most people meet the label. Cotton poplin does a lot of the work here, printed with the house florals and cut with full skirts, belts and tidy bodices. The Sleeveless Painted Iris Poplin Day Dress is $4,990, a fair marker for the middle of the range. Wool and knit styles sit close by, and the top of the group goes to the Mixed Botanical Off-Shoulder Dress and the Plaid Cashmere-Blend Dress. Browse more of them in designer dresses.

Cocktail dresses: roughly $5,600 to $31,900

Cocktail is the category with the steepest climb. At the bottom you will find tweed and printed faille with a little sequin texture. Past $20,000 the fabric almost disappears under work: guipure lace, beaded fringe, crystal and glass embroidery. The $31,930 Intarsia Leaves Cutout Embroidered Cocktail Dress is the clearest example in the current edit. If you are shopping for a specific event, our guide to Oscar de la Renta wedding guest dresses narrows the field.

Evening gowns: roughly $6,300 to $48,700

Gowns carry the highest typical price of any category, $15,200. A printed jersey column starts the range at $6,310. A plain faille gown with good structure lands in the low teens. Then the embroidered pieces take over: the Crystal Leaves Embroidered Gown is $40,330, and the beaded halter gown at the top is $48,700. The edit in The Dress Edit sets these next to other evening houses.

Why are Oscar de la Renta gowns so expensive?

Compare two new-season gowns and the answer is fairly plain. The Sleeveless Large Watercolor Iris Faille Gown is $11,510. It is printed faille, made in Italy, with the pattern doing the decorating. The Beaded Mixed Botanical Embroidered Halter Gown is $48,700. It is polyamide tulle covered in beaded flowers of rose, gold and red, lined in silk, with a beaded vine forming the halter, and it is made in the United States. Same house, same season, more than four times the price.

Embellishment

Beading, crystal and embroidery are the single biggest driver. Of the 25 styles above $20,000 in our count, 23 carry some form of applied work: beads, crystals, sequins, fringe, threadwork, pearl drops and guipure. The two exceptions are silk gowns, which brings us to fabric. Covering a full length of tulle so that “almost none of the base shows”, as our description of the beaded cocktail dress puts it, takes far more labour than cutting and sewing a printed fabric.

Fabric

Silk shows up across the line and lifts prices when it does. The Sleeveless Abstract Landscape Chiffon Gown is 97% silk with a silk lining, at $21,320. Silk twill blouses run above the cotton poplin ones; the Plaid Cashmere-Blend Dress mixes wool, silk and 15% cashmere for $10,150. At the other end, cotton poplin is why so many day dresses sit near $5,000 to $6,000.

Where it is made

Of the 44 new-season pieces we added this month, the country of origin tells its own story about price:

  • United States: 8 pieces: five gowns ($13,990 to $48,700, four of them beaded and embroidered), both heavily worked cocktail dresses ($23,560 and $31,930) and one georgette caftan.
  • India: 2 embroidered caftans, including the $18,520 Intarsia Leaves Cutout Embroidered Caftan.
  • Italy: the other 34, covering day dresses, knitwear, blouses, tailoring, coats and the leather O Pochette.

The pattern is consistent: the most worked evening pieces are made in the United States, while Italian production covers the day wardrobe and leather goods.

Are Oscar de la Renta caftans, knitwear and separates cheaper?

Yes, and this is the most practical way into the label. Knitwear is tightly priced, from $2,270 to $4,630, and many cardigans carry the same embroidered florals as the dresses. The Beaded Peony Embroidered Pullover at $3,470 gives you beadwork for a fraction of a gown. Blouses and tanks start at $1,662, and skirts and pants at $2,058.

Caftans are a separate case. They start near $9,000 because most are cut in georgette, chiffon and silk, and many are embroidered; and the typical one costs about $11,090. Coats and jackets span $2,133 for a bolero up to $10,150 for the draped wool coat.

How much is an Oscar de la Renta bag?

Bags start at $2,410 for the calf leather O Pochette, with the typical bag at $5,030. The TRO bag in its mini size starts at $4,790 in wicker and reaches $8,350 in crystal pavé; the Crystal Pavé Mini TRO Bag in Black is $8,310. The Alibi in Wicker is $5,630. The ceiling is the Mini Saturn Minaudière at $15,200, an evening object as much as a bag.

Below the bags sit the smaller pieces: card cases from $750, cosmetic cases from $1,110, wallets from $1,270, Mixed Botanical scarves at $1,790 and wool-blend shawls up to $2,230. The $630 enamel key chain is the lowest-priced Oscar de la Renta piece on Coveti.

What about Oscar de la Renta wedding dresses?

Bridal is its own line, launched in 2006, and it sits outside this price table. We cover it in a dedicated guide to Oscar de la Renta wedding dresses.

How to spend well on Oscar de la Renta

Decide first which job the piece has to do. For a single big evening, the gown and cocktail categories are where the house is most itself, and the embroidered work is what you are paying for. For something you will wear every week, a poplin day dress, a cardigan and an O Pochette cost less together than one embroidered gown.

Check fit before you buy. Coveti lists UK sizes, which run four above the US size on the label, so a US 2 is a UK 6, and the brand says its fit is true to size. Our Oscar de la Renta size guide has the full conversion. Coveti ships worldwide, with duties calculated at checkout.
