Who Is Safiyaa? Founder, History and 2026 Timeline
Safiyaa is a London eveningwear label founded in 2011 by German-born designer Daniela Karnuts, who named the house after her daughter. It makes architectural gowns, cape dresses and occasion pieces cut in stretch heavy crepe, and Coveti carries more than 1,400 Safiyaa pieces, shipped worldwide from our UAE and Australia hubs.
That is the short version. The longer one explains why a label that launched with a dozen dresses now turns up at state dinners, royal premieres and black tie weddings, and why its name gets searched thousands of times a month. Here is the full story, with dates you can check.
Who founded Safiyaa?
Daniela Karnuts founded Safiyaa in London in 2011. She is German-born, and before Safiyaa became a ready-to-wear label her business offered tailored, made-to-measure clothing for women from a studio in Mayfair.
That made-to-measure start explains a lot about the clothes today. The cuts are engineered rather than draped loosely, seams sit where a tailor would put them, and the shapes hold their line on the body instead of relying on the hanger. Safiyaa launched with 12 designs, a deliberately small first collection for a house built on fit.
Karnuts has described the label as “demi-couture at a ready-to-wear price point”. In practical terms, the clothes borrow the structure and finishing you associate with couture, then sell them in standard sizes off the rail, with some styles made to order.
What does the name Safiyaa mean?
Safiyaa is named after Daniela Karnuts’ daughter, and Khaleej Times reported in 2016 that the name means “pure”.
The meaning fits the design language closely. Safiyaa pieces are clean in outline, with very little surface fuss on the plain crepe styles, so the shoulder line, the cape and the sleeve do the talking. When the house does add decoration, it tends to be concentrated: a crystal neckline, a feather hem, an embellished belt.
Where is Safiyaa made?
Safiyaa is designed in London. According to a 2016 Khaleej Times report, the first collection was made in India and production later moved to Istanbul, so by that account the house has produced in Istanbul.
For buyers, the label on the garment is the reference point. Each Coveti product page lists the details we hold for that piece, and our team can confirm specifics for any style you are considering.
What does Safiyaa make?
Safiyaa makes eveningwear first: long dresses, midi dresses, short dresses and bridal, supported by tops, capes, jackets, skirts, trousers, jumpsuits and accessories.
The Coveti edit shows where the weight of the collection sits. Of the 1,421 Safiyaa pieces we had published on 10 October 2026, the split looked like this:
| Category | Pieces on Coveti (10 Oct 2026) | Where to browse |
|---|---|---|
| Maxi dresses | 470+ | Designer maxi dresses |
| Midi dresses | 200+ | Designer midi dresses |
| Tops | 190+ | Safiyaa brand page |
| Mini dresses | 120+ | Designer mini dresses |
| Bridal and wedding dresses | 90+ | Designer wedding dresses |
| Jackets | 80+ | Safiyaa brand page |
Long dresses are the heart of it. A piece like the Selena Long Dress in Maritime Blue shows the house at full volume, while the Naya Short Dress in Black shows how the same crepe works above the knee. For bridal, the Siena Long Dress in Ivory with Blue Embroidery is a good example of the softer, embroidered side of the range. Our Safiyaa dresses guide walks through the silhouettes one by one.
What are the Safiyaa signatures?
The signatures are architectural shapes in stretch heavy crepe, with capes, one-shoulder necklines and concentrated embellishment.
- Stretch heavy crepe. The house fabric is 92% polyester and 8% elastane. It has enough weight to hold a sharp line and enough stretch to move.
- Capes and split capes. Capes fall from the shoulder and sometimes split at the arm, giving drama without a train. The Ollie Cape in Crimson and the Devon Cape in Black show the idea as separate pieces. More in our Safiyaa cape dresses edit.
- One-shoulder silhouettes. A single bare shoulder balanced by a covered arm is one of the most recognisable Safiyaa outlines.
- Detachable belts. Belts such as the Jonia Belt clip on to change the waist of a dress. The Mirabella Long Dress in Soft Sky with Embellished Belt is a current example.
- Crystal and feather embellishment. Usually placed at the neck, cuff and hem, as on the Federica Midi Dress in Black with Feather Embellishment.
- Tech Duchess satin. A structured satin the house uses for accessories such as evening gloves.
- Long sleeves and high necklines. Many styles cover the arm and collarbone, which is why Safiyaa is a strong choice for modest dressing. See our Safiyaa modest occasion dresses guide.
