Zimmermann Gowns: Evening and Black Tie Styles, and How to Fit Them

0

A Zimmermann gown is a full-length evening dress built on the same ideas as the label’s day dresses, lace, drape, billowed sleeves and fine detail, but cut for black tie, evening weddings and galas. The strongest choices are the bandeau and twist gowns for a clean line, the lace and crochet gowns for texture, and the fringed or metallic gowns for a party. This guide covers which Zimmermann gown suits which dress code, how to fit one, and the styles on Coveti now.

What makes a Zimmermann gown different

Zimmermann, the Sydney label founded by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann in 1991, built its name on romantic day dresses. Its gowns keep that softness. You will rarely find a stiff, boned ballgown here. Instead the evening pieces rely on drape, jersey, lace, crochet and handwork, which makes them lighter to wear and easier to move in through a long evening.

That also makes them versatile. A Zimmermann gown can go to black tie with heels and fine jewellery, and to a summer evening wedding with flat sandals. For daytime long dresses, which are cut more loosely, see our Zimmermann mini, midi and maxi dresses guide.

Bandeau, twist and draped gowns

For a clean, modern line, start here. The Luna Twist Bandeau Gown twists at the bust and falls straight, and the Valiant Jersey Bandeau Gown is a jersey bandeau that skims rather than clings. The Valiant Draped Slinky Gown has a fluid drape that works well for an evening wedding, and the Carousel Metallic Twist Gown adds a metallic finish to the same twisted idea. These are the gowns to choose if you want the shape, not the decoration, to make the impression. They also travel better than structured evening dresses: jersey and draped fabrics fold into a suitcase and recover quickly, which matters for a destination wedding.

Lace, crochet and appliqué gowns

This is Zimmermann’s signature evening territory. The Luna Lace Billow Gown pairs lace with a billowed shape, and the Ascent Batwing Lace Gown has a batwing sleeve that covers the arm. The Hypnotic Hand Crochet Gown is hand crocheted, the kind of piece that takes time to make and is worth looking at up close. The Hypnotic Applique Gown uses appliqué for a raised texture. For a red lace option, the Illustration Lace Gown is the most dramatic. Our Zimmermann lace dresses guide explains the different laces and how to care for them.

Party gowns: fringe, metallic and volume

For a gala, a milestone birthday or an evening with dancing, choose movement. The Valiant Fringed Gown has fringing that swings as you walk, the Momentum Burnout Bubble Gown combines burnout fabric with a bubble shape, and the Momentum Rouleau Billow Gown uses rouleau detailing with a billowed skirt. The Rebellion Lantern Gown has a rounded lantern shape, and the Clash Spliced Ruffle Maxi Gown splices prints with ruffles for a less formal evening.

The Alchemy gown and other searched styles

The Alchemy Gown gets its own search interest and is one of the more recognisable Zimmermann evening silhouettes. The Alchemy Halter Dress offers the same line with a halter neck. Other names people search include the Ascent and Valiant lines: the Ascent Flutter Gown has a flutter detail that softens the shoulder, and the Valiant Lingerie Gown borrows lingerie details for a slip-like gown. For a colour, the Illuminate Plunge Gown comes in blue with a plunging neck, and the Illustration Flounce Gown is a black gown with a flounced hem.

Choosing a Zimmermann gown by dress code

  • Black tie: full length is expected. A bandeau or draped gown in black or a deep colour is the safest choice.
  • Evening wedding guest: lace or printed gowns in colour work well. Avoid ivory and white, which belong to the bride. Our Zimmermann wedding guest guide goes further.
  • Bride: a white or ivory gown is a different decision. Our Zimmermann wedding dress guide and Zimmermann white dresses guide cover the bridal options.
  • Gala or party: fringe, metallic or volume.
  • Summer evening event: jersey or crochet, which breathe better than heavy satin.

Fitting a Zimmermann gown

Zimmermann uses a numeric scale from 0P to 4. A 0 is a UK 8 and a US 4, and every step adds one UK size, as set out in our Zimmermann size guide. On gowns with a fitted bodice, bandeau or corset line, the guide recommends taking the larger size if you are between two, since alterations to take in are simpler than letting out. Jersey and draped styles carry more ease.

Petite frames should look at the 0P, the petite cut of the smallest size, and choose bandeau or draped styles that will not swamp a small frame. Taller frames carry the billowed and lantern shapes best, and a gown with volume at the hem looks its most dramatic on a long leg.

Plan for a hem. Gowns are cut long, so try yours with the shoes you will wear and allow time for a tailor. For shoes and bags, see the Zimmermann shoes guide and the Zimmermann bags guide. You can browse all designer evening gowns on Coveti or the full Zimmermann collection.

Zimmermann gowns around the world

Australia

Australian gown season runs through spring racing, end-of-year balls and summer weddings, with the Melbourne Cup carnival in early November as a high point for evening dressing. Because seasons are reversed, Zimmermann’s northern autumn evening pieces arrive in the Australian spring. A Zimmermann 1 is an AU 10.

United States

In the US, gown demand follows gala season in spring and autumn, plus summer evening weddings. On the brand’s chart a Zimmermann 0 is a US 4 and a 2 is a US 8, so check the conversion carefully before you order.

United Kingdom

British buyers need gowns for black tie weddings, charity balls and the winter party season. Zimmermann sizes map directly, with a 0 equal to a UK 8 and a 2 to a UK 12.

Germany and Europe

Germany is one of Zimmermann’s biggest markets, and European demand peaks around opera and ball season and summer weddings on the coast. A Zimmermann 1 is an EU 36, from the brand’s own chart.

Zimmermann gowns: common questions

Is a Zimmermann gown suitable for black tie?

Yes. Full-length Zimmermann gowns, especially bandeau, draped and lace styles in darker colours, are formal enough for black tie.

What is the Zimmermann Alchemy gown?

The Alchemy Gown is a full-length Zimmermann evening style from the Alchemy line, which also includes halter and sheath dresses. It is one of the brand’s most searched gowns.

Can I wear a Zimmermann gown to a wedding as a guest?

Yes, for an evening or black tie wedding. Choose a colour or print and avoid ivory and white.

How should a Zimmermann gown fit?

Fitted bodices should sit close at the bust and waist, so take the larger size if you are between two. Draped and jersey gowns carry more ease.

Do Zimmermann gowns need hemming?

Often. They are cut long, so try them with your evening shoes and allow time for a tailor to adjust the hem.

Does Zimmermann make bridal gowns?

Yes. Ivory lace and macramé gowns appear in many collections, and Coveti’s Zimmermann wedding dress guide covers the bridal options.
