What Is a Raffia Bag? Fibre, Weave and Care Explained
A raffia bag is a bag woven from raffia, a natural fibre taken from the long leaves of the raffia palm, and Madagascar is the main source of the fibre. Raffia is softer, lighter and more pliable than most straw, so it can be handwoven into structured totes, crochet shapes and fringe. Good examples are the handwoven Goldentime bags from Zimmermann, which sit within our edit of designer tote bags.
Our worked example is the Zimmermann Goldentime Small Tote, handwoven from natural raffia and made in Madagascar, with calf leather trim and surfboard inspired gold hardware. If you are shopping for the beach specifically, our guide to designer beach bags compares raffia with canvas, leather and crochet.

- Store a raffia bag stuffed with acid free tissue in a breathable dust bag, away from direct sun.
Where does raffia come from?
Raffia comes from the raffia palm, a tropical palm with very long leaves, and Madagascar is the main source of the fibre used in fashion. The fibre is stripped from the leaves, dried in the sun and then woven, knotted and crocheted by hand.
Because the fibre is a natural ribbon rather than a round stem, it lies flat and folds without cracking. That is why raffia feels closer to a textile than to a stiff straw basket. It also takes dye well, which is how a raffia bag can come in peach, chocolate and denim blue as easily as in its natural cream.
The Goldentime bags are a clear case of fibre and craft staying in the same place. Zimmermann states that each one is made in Madagascar, from natural raffia yarn that is handwoven into shape. For more on where the brand makes the rest of its collection, read our guide to where Zimmermann is made.
Is raffia the same as straw?
No. Raffia is one specific palm fibre, while straw is a broad word for many dried plant materials, and paper straw is a manufactured yarn made from twisted paper. They look similar in a shop window, but they behave very differently on holiday.
| Material | What it is | Feel | Water | Shape over time | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raffia | Natural fibre from the leaves of the raffia palm | Soft, pliable, slightly matte | Splash only, never soak | Holds shape well when stored stuffed | Handwoven totes, fringe bags, visors, hats |
| Straw | General term for dried plant stems, grasses and leaves | Firmer, sometimes brittle | Can crack when wet then dried | Can split at folds | Baskets, sun hats, market bags |
| Paper straw | Twisted paper yarn, often lacquered | Smooth, uniform, a little stiff | Softens and can lose shape when wet | Creases where it bends | Lower cost summer bags and hats |
The easiest way to tell them apart is touch. Raffia feels like a dry, flat ribbon and gives under your fingers. Paper straw feels perfectly even, almost machine smooth. Natural straw is the stiffest of the three.
How is a raffia bag made?
A designer raffia bag is usually handwoven: the fibre is prepared into yarn, then woven, crocheted and knotted into a shape, before leather trim, a lining and hardware are added. The weaving sets the character of the bag, and the finishing sets how long it lasts.
The weave
Different weaves give different looks. A tight, flat weave reads clean and structured. A crochet stitch is softer and more open. A patterned weave can create a motif, as on the Goldentime Small Tote, which is woven in a shell inspired pattern of tan and brown on cream.
The fringe
Fringe is made by leaving lengths of raffia loose and then cutting them by hand. On the Goldentime Small Fringe Tote in peach, layers of hand cut fringe create a sculptural shape that moves as you walk. On the Goldentime Fringe Shoulder Bag, the fringe falls from the base of a small crescent shape.
The finishing
Finishing is where a raffia bag becomes a designer bag. Leather at the handle and edges takes the strain the fibre would otherwise carry. A lining keeps small things from catching in the weave. Hardware gives the bag its signature. The Goldentime bags use calf leather trim and surfboard inspired gold hardware engraved with the Zimmermann logo. The totes close with internal lacing, while the fringe shoulder bag closes with a zip over a cotton lining.
Why does a raffia bag fray and vary in colour?
Fraying ends and slight colour changes are normal in a raffia bag because each strand is a natural fibre that is prepared and woven by hand. No two leaves are identical, so no two bags are either.
Expect a few small ends to show where strands are joined. Expect the natural tone to shift slightly from one panel to the next. These are signs of handwork rather than defects. What is not normal is a strand that keeps unravelling from a seam, a handle pulling away from its leather, and a weave that has gaps you can push a finger through. Those point to a construction problem, not character.
A neat loose end can be trimmed close with small, sharp scissors. Never pull a loose strand, because it may be part of a longer run through the weave.
What can you carry in a raffia bag?
A small raffia tote holds a day’s essentials; a larger one takes a towel and a book. Measure your phone and sunglasses case against the bag before you buy, because a woven bag does not stretch the way a canvas tote does.
- Goldentime Small Tote: 35cm long, 23cm high, 8cm deep, with a 17cm handle drop. Takes a phone, sunglasses and a small wallet.
- Goldentime Small Fringe Tote: the same dimensions with fringe, so it reads fuller than it is.
- Goldentime Fringe Shoulder Bag: 21cm long, 13cm high, 5cm deep, with a 55cm strap drop. Phone, card holder, lipstick and keys.
- Goldentime Medium Fringe Tote in Beige: a larger shape for days when you carry more.
- Goldentime Medium Fringe Tote in Tan: the medium fringe tote in a warmer tone.

How do you clean a raffia bag?
Clean a raffia bag dry first, and only damp spot clean when you must. Water is the main enemy of raffia, so the less you use, the better.
- Empty the bag and turn it upside down. Tap the base to release sand and dust.
- Brush the weave in the direction of the strands with a soft, dry brush, such as a clean makeup brush.
- For a mark, dampen a white cloth very lightly with water and dab, never rub. Rubbing lifts and breaks fibres.
- Blot dry with a clean towel straight away.
- Let it dry naturally in the shade, stuffed with tissue so it holds its shape. Keep it away from radiators and direct sun.
- Wipe leather trim with a dry, soft cloth. Keep sunscreen and perfume off the handle, as oils can darken leather.
Never put a raffia bag in the washing machine, and never soak it. For stubborn stains on a designer piece, a specialist cleaner is the safest route. Our Zimmermann care and authenticity guide has more on looking after the brand’s pieces.
How do you reshape a crushed raffia bag?
Most crushed raffia bags recover with stuffing, gentle steam and time. Raffia has some memory, so it wants to return to the shape it was woven into.
- Stuff the bag firmly with acid free tissue until it reaches its original shape. Do not use newspaper, as ink can transfer.
- Hold a steamer well away from the surface and pass it over the dented area for a few seconds. You want warmth, not wetness.
- Press the weave back into line with your fingers while it is warm.
- Leave it stuffed to dry for a full day in a cool room.
Fringe that has bent out of line can be combed gently with your fingers, then held flat under a light book for a few hours.
How should you store a raffia bag?
Store raffia stuffed, upright and in a breathable dust bag, somewhere cool, dry and dark. Plastic traps moisture, and moisture is what leads to mildew in natural fibres.
- Keep it upright on a shelf rather than hanging it by the handle for months.
- Never stack heavier bags on top.
- Leave a little space around it so the fringe is not crushed.
- Check it once in the off season and refresh the tissue.
How do you wear a raffia bag?
Wear raffia with clothes that share its natural, summery texture: linen, silk, cotton broderie, denim and swimwear. Keep the rest of the look calm so the weave can be the detail.
| Setting | Bag | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| Beach club | Goldentime Small Tote | Swimsuit, open linen shirt, raffia visor |
| Holiday lunch | Goldentime Small Fringe Tote in peach | Knit dress, flat sandals, gold earrings |
| Market morning | Goldentime Fringe Shoulder Bag, crossbody | Linen shirt, denim, flat sandals |
| Resort dinner | Small tote carried by the handle | Silk maxi dress, sculptural heels |
Matching raffia from head to toe can work if the pieces are different shapes. The Zimmermann Raffia Visor, in natural raffia with a printed silk ribbon tie, and the Raffia Fringe Bucket Hat both sit well with a woven tote. See how to wear a visor hat for styling ideas, and how to style a fringe bag if the fringe totes are calling. These pieces come from the collection in our Zimmermann Resort 2027 edit.
