The Alexander McQueen Skull: What It Means and Where It Began

No motif in modern fashion is more instantly readable than the Alexander McQueen skull. It has been copied, counterfeited and reinvented for over two decades, and it still sells out. Here is what it actually means, and why it never reads as morbid on the rail.

A memento mori, not a shock tactic

Lee McQueen threaded mortality through his work from the start, drawing on the memento mori tradition, the centuries old practice of keeping a reminder of death close as a spur to live fully. Victorian mourning jewellery did it with jet and lockets; McQueen did it with print and embroidery. On the runway his darkness was theatrical, but the skull itself is closer to romance than horror: beauty with an awareness of time.

2003: the scarf that carried it everywhere

The skull went from house code to global signature in 2003, when it was printed on a silk chiffon scarf. The skull scarf became one of the defining accessories of the 2000s, wrapped around the necks and handbag handles of every it girl of the decade, and it has never left production. For a while it was arguably the most recognisable single accessory in fashion.

Where the skull lives in the current collection

In the ready-to-wear Coveti stocks now, the skull appears as a print rather than hardware-first branding: scattered across the Silk Skull Print Evening Dress and the easier Wrap Dress, drawn in florals on the Floral Skull T-shirt, embroidered on the classic tee, and hiding in plain sight as skull pullers on the zips of the Slashed Zip Bootcut Jeans. The house under Seán McGirr treats it the way the founder did, a signature to be woven in, not a logo to be shouted.

How to wear it

The skull print does the talking, so style it against discipline: the wrap dress with a razor sharp blazer, the tee under a single breasted jacket with nothing else patterned in the frame. That tension, romance against rigour, is the whole McQueen idea.
