Who Is Alexander McQueen? The House Behind the Skull Scarf

The founder: a Savile Row hand with a wild imagination

Lee Alexander McQueen was born in London in 1969 and left school for Savile Row, apprenticing at Anderson & Sheppard and then Gieves & Hawkes before taking his MA at Central Saint Martins. The stylist Isabella Blow famously bought his entire 1992 graduate collection, and the house was born that year. What set him apart was never shock alone. It was that the most theatrical pieces were built on flawless construction, a jacket shoulder a Savile Row cutter would sign off, a waist seam placed to the millimetre. He was named British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2003, and ran Givenchy’s couture studio from 1996 to 2001 while building his own label.

The codes: bumster, corset, skull

Three ideas from the nineties still define the house. After Lee McQueen’s death in 2010, Sarah Burton, his right hand for over a decade, led the studio for thirteen years and designed the wedding dress of Catherine, Princess of Wales, in 2011. In late 2023 the house appointed Seán McGirr, a Dublin born Central Saint Martins graduate who had run ready-to-wear at JW Anderson. McGirr’s collections lean back into the founder’s silhouettes, the peak shoulder, the corset line, the sharpened waist, and his Spring 2026 show reworked the idea of the uniform into eveningwear.
