Jimmy Choo in brief
Jimmy Choo, born Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia, trained at Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney and opened his first shop in East London in 1986. British Vogue gave his shoes an eight-page feature in 1988, and Diana, Princess of Wales was among his early clients. In 1996 he founded the ready-to-wear company with Tamara Mellon, then an accessories editor at British Vogue. He sold his stake in 2001. Sandra Choi, who joined at the start, has been sole creative director since 2013, and since 2017 the house has belonged to Capri Holdings. The company is still headquartered in London. The editor’s guide to buying Jimmy Choo
Start with the pump. The Love comes at 65, 85 and 100 mm with a sharply pointed toe, and Coveti carries it in black, latte, chai, ballet pink and deep merlot, plus a slingback version. For evening and weddings, the Azia and Saeda sandals and the crystal-covered pumps carry the house’s signature sparkle, and the Bon Bon bag is the matching piece. For daytime, the Diamond trainers, the Bing mule and the Margot flat do the work. Heel height is in the style name, so an Azia 95 is a 95 mm heel. Our guides to the Love pump, Jimmy Choo sandals, the Cinderella shoes and Jimmy Choo sneakers go through every version.
