The brands, one by one

Canada Goose

Canada Goose began as Metro Sportswear, founded in Toronto in 1957 by Sam Tick, and took its current name in 2000. It is the most widely known Canadian parka label, and it brands its products “Made in Canada”, with factories in cities including Toronto, Winnipeg and Montreal. Our Mackage vs Canada Goose guide compares fit, warmth and fur.

Mackage

Mackage was founded in Montreal in 1999 by Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan. It is owned by APP Group (Canada) Inc., a privately held Quebec company that also owns Soia & Kyo, and its head office is in Montreal’s fashion district. Mackage does not own factories: its coats are made by partner factories in China, Vietnam, South Korea, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Bosnia, Turkiye and Armenia. It is a Canadian brand, and its coats are not made in Canada.

What sets Mackage apart is the cut. Coats are close to the body, finished with leather trims, and each style carries a temperature rating. Three picks for winter 2026/27:

  • City cold: the Shyla-NF, a 2-in-1 longline down coat with a removable down bib, storm visor hood and Nordic Tech shell, rated to minus 25C with 800 fill power.
  • Men’s statement jacket: the Robert, a quilted down aviator with sheepskin panels and shearling trim, 750+ fill power, rated to minus 20C.
  • The slopes: the Rayna-X, a fitted ski jacket with a detachable powder skirt, RECCO reflector and removable fox collar, rated to minus 20C.

For men who want a fur-free parka, the Edward-NFR 2-in-1 down coat with a removable hooded bib is rated to minus 25C. Women who want the Signature Collar can start with the Kay-NFR. Our Mackage warmth ratings guide lists every style, and Is Mackage a luxury brand? covers ownership in more detail.

Moose Knuckles

Moose Knuckles was launched in Montreal in 2009 by Noah Stern and Ayal Twik. Cathay Capital is its majority shareholder, and in October 2024 the Chinese down specialist Bosideng became a key investor. The brand ended natural-fur production by the end of 2022. Coveti carries Moose Knuckles, and our Moose Knuckles vs Canada Goose guide sets the two side by side.

nobis

Toronto-based nobis, written in lower case, was founded in 2007 by Robin Yates, who previously worked at Canada Goose. The name is Latin for “us”. It makes technical outerwear with a fashion edge.

Kanuk

Kanuk was founded in 1974 in a small Montreal workshop, with the aim of making outerwear for the Quebec climate. It is one of the oldest names on this list and is still based in Montreal.

Quartz Co.

Quartz Co. was founded in 1997 and is run from Montreal by brothers Jean-Philippe, Francois-Xavier and Guillaume Robert. According to the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, its coats continue to be made in Quebec, using Canadian down.

Rudsak

Rudsak was launched in Montreal in 1994 by Evik Asatoorian, who still leads the brand. Its first garments were made in Montreal’s garment district, and leather and outerwear remain its core.

Arc’teryx

Arc’teryx was founded in North Vancouver in 1989 as Rock Solid and later renamed, with a focus on outerwear and climbing gear for British Columbia’s Coast Mountains. It is now part of Amer Sports. Pick it for technical shells; pick the down specialists above for city warmth.

Is Mackage a Canadian brand?

Yes. Mackage was founded in Montreal, is owned by a Quebec company and is designed at its Montreal head office. It is not made in Canada. Its parent company, APP Group, lists China, Vietnam, South Korea, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Bosnia, Turkiye and Armenia as production countries. If a Mackage label says “Made in Canada”, read our guide on how to tell if Mackage is real.

Which Canadian winter coat brand is warmest?

Each brand rates warmth its own way, so compare like with like. Mackage prints a temperature on each style, from plus 5C to minus 35C. Beyond the number, look at fill, hood and length: a longline coat such as the Shyla-NF covers more of you than a bomber. Our guide to Mackage long down coats covers the longest styles, and the Mackage women’s ski jackets comparison covers the mountain.
