Diamond Wedding Bands: Pave, Half Pave and Matching
A diamond wedding band is the ring you will wear more than any other, so it has to suit your engagement ring, your hands and the way you live. This guide covers the main styles, how to match a band to the ring it sits beside, and how sizing works, with pieces from Messika as the worked examples. Our full diamond wedding bands edit starts at around $2,630 at Coveti with the Gatsby Wedding Band in 18K White Gold, Small Model.
The short answer: choose a band in the same metal as your engagement ring, keep its width at roughly the width of the engagement ring’s shank, and pick half pave if you want sparkle with easy resizing. Full pave gives the most light. A plain band suits a busy engagement ring. Always try the two rings together before you commit.
The main styles of diamond wedding band
Full pave. Small diamonds set all the way around the band, sometimes called an eternity band. It sparkles from every angle, including the side your palm faces. The trade-off is practical: a band covered in stones is harder to resize, because there is no plain gold to cut into. If your fingers change size through the seasons, keep that in mind.
Half pave. Diamonds across the top half only, with plain gold underneath. This is the most popular modern choice, because you see the diamonds when your hand is relaxed, and the plain section makes resizing simpler and keeps the inside of the finger comfortable. The Move Uno Half Pave Ring in 18K White Gold is a slim example, with 0.09 carats and a single moving diamond in the Move cage, at around $2,310 at Coveti.
Single line of stones. A row of diamonds set in a narrow band, clean and graphic. Messika’s Gatsby collection is built on lines of micro-set diamonds, and the Gatsby bands come in two widths. The small model carries 0.26 carats. The Gatsby Wedding Band in 18K Yellow Gold, Medium Model carries 0.65 carats and costs around $5,150 at Coveti, so it reads as a statement on its own.
Plain gold with a single diamond. Mostly gold, with one diamond as an accent. It suits people who want a wedding band that looks like a wedding band first. The Move Joaillerie Wedding Band in 18K Yellow Gold, Small Model sets a single 0.03 carat diamond inside the Move motif, at around $4,380 at Coveti. Move Joaillerie is the house’s most minimal take on Move and includes wedding bands for him and her, which makes it a sensible place to look when a couple wants rings that relate to each other without being identical.
How to match a wedding band to an engagement ring
This is the question that matters most, and there are a few principles that hold up.
Match the metal first. Two rings in the same gold colour read as a set. Mixing white and yellow gold can look intentional, but the gold rubs against gold every day, and harder alloys can wear softer ones over many years. Messika makes most of its bands in 18 carat white, yellow and pink gold, its name for rose gold, so you can nearly always match exactly. Our guide to white gold vs yellow gold vs rose gold covers the look of each.
Match the width. A band roughly as wide as the engagement ring’s shank looks balanced. A much wider band can overwhelm a fine solitaire, while a band that is too thin next to a bold ring disappears. As a general guide, a 2 to 3 mm band sits neatly beside most solitaires.
Balance the sparkle. A plain solitaire can take a full pave band. A ring with a halo, a pave shank and a large centre stone usually looks better with something quieter, because two busy rings compete. Take the Joy Brilliant-Cut Solitaire Ring in 18K White Gold, Small Model, a 0.45 carat design at around $5,150 at Coveti. Its Joy halo already frames the centre diamond, so a slim line of stones like the Gatsby small band keeps the pair calm.
Check the profile. Look at the rings side on. Some solitaires sit high on the finger, so a straight band slides underneath. Others sit low, and a straight band leaves a gap. There is no way to judge this from photos alone, so try the two together, and if you are buying online, check the returns terms first.
Bands from the same collection
The easiest way to get a harmonious pair is to stay within one collection, because the gold work, the diamond size and the finish already speak the same language.
Fiery is a good example. The collection is built on the pear cut, Valerie Messika’s favourite. The Fiery Ring in 18K White Gold, Small Model carries 0.35 carats at around $5,740 at Coveti, and the Fiery Wedding Band in 18K Pink Gold carries 0.19 carats at around $3,200 at Coveti, also made in white and yellow gold. Wear them in the same gold and the pair reads as one idea.
Joy works in the same way. The Joy Wedding Band in 18K White Gold has 0.40 carats of diamonds and costs around $4,150 at Coveti, and it shares its language with the Joy solitaires in brilliant, pear and emerald cuts.
If your engagement ring is a toi et moi, two stones side by side, the shape is already asymmetric, so a straight half pave band tends to work better than a full pave one. Messika’s version is My Twin, a pear-cut diamond facing an emerald-cut diamond that never touch. Our explainer on what a toi et moi ring is covers the format in more depth.
When the wedding band is the statement
Not every couple buys an engagement ring, and some people wear their wedding band alone. In that case a richer band makes sense. The Move Joaillerie Pave Wedding Band in 18K White Gold, Small Model carries 0.49 carats of pave around the Move motif and costs around $7,200 at Coveti. The Move Romane Half Pave Ring in 18K White Gold, Small Model, from the line named after one of Valerie Messika’s daughters, sets 0.30 carats and costs around $7,010 at Coveti. Either can stand alone and still take a slim band later.

How many carats in a wedding band?
Wedding bands carry much less diamond weight than engagement rings because the stones are small and spread out. Across our Messika bands the range runs from 0.03 carats on the Move Joaillerie band to 0.65 carats on the Gatsby medium model. For a band worn beside a solitaire, 0.15 to 0.40 carats is a good middle ground. Messika typically uses G colour, VS clarity diamonds, so even the smallest stones are bright and clean.
Prices follow weight and width. Our Messika rings run from $1,680 to $26,970 with a median of $5,580, and most of the wedding bands sit between $2,630 and $7,200.
Sizing a wedding band
Messika uses EU ring sizes, which measure the inside circumference in millimetres, and the house says its rings fit true to standard sizing. Our bands come in sizes from 44 to 60 depending on the model. Here are the most common conversions.
| EU (mm circumference) | UK | US |
|---|---|---|
| 48 | I 1/2 | 4.5 |
| 49 | J 1/2 | 5 |
| 50 | K 1/2 | 5.5 |
| 52 | L 1/2 | 6 |
| 53 | M 1/2 | 6.5 |
| 54 | N 1/2 | 7 |
| 56 | O 1/2 | 7.5 |
| 57 | P 1/2 | 8 |
Two tips matter for bands. First, a wider band feels tighter than a narrow one in the same size, so if you are choosing a medium width, consider half a size up. Second, measure at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest. Our full ring size chart explains how to measure at home, and our Messika ring guide goes through every ring collection.
Living with a diamond band
A wedding band takes more knocks than any other ring, because it sits on the hand you use for everything. Pave stones are held by tiny beads of gold, so it is worth taking the band off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning. Hand cream and soap build up under small diamonds quickly. A soak in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then a gentle pass with a soft toothbrush, brings back the sparkle.
Plan when you buy, too. Many couples choose the band a few months before the wedding, which leaves time to try it beside the engagement ring and change the size if needed. If your engagement ring is new, wear it for a few weeks first so you know how it sits before you pick its partner.
Every piece we sell is 100% authentic, and Coveti ships worldwide from London. If a size turns out wrong, our returns policy explains the next steps. You can see every collection on our Messika brand page.
Frequently asked questions
Should my wedding band match my engagement ring?
Your wedding band should match your engagement ring in metal, and ideally sit close to it in width. It does not need to match in style. A plain solitaire suits a pave band, while a busy halo ring looks better beside something quieter. Staying within one collection, such as Messika Joy, is the easiest way to get a balanced pair.
Is a half pave band better than a full pave band?
A half pave band is more practical, while a full pave band gives more sparkle. Half pave keeps plain gold under the finger, which is more comfortable and makes resizing simpler. Full pave shows diamonds from every angle but is harder to resize because there is no plain section to work with.
What width should a diamond wedding band be?
Aim for a wedding band roughly as wide as the shank of your engagement ring. A 2 to 3 mm band suits most solitaires. Wider bands make a stronger statement and suit people who wear their wedding band alone. Wider bands also feel tighter, so consider going half a size up.
How much does a Messika wedding band cost?
Messika wedding bands at Coveti cost from around $2,630 for the Gatsby small model to around $7,200 for the Move Joaillerie pave band. The Fiery band sits at around $3,200 and the Joy band at around $4,150. Price follows the number of diamonds and the width of the gold.
Does Messika make wedding bands for men?
Yes. Messika’s Move Joaillerie collection includes wedding bands for him and her, designed as the most minimal version of the Move motif. That makes it a good choice for couples who want rings from the same family that do not look identical. Check each product page for the available sizes.
What ring size system does Messika use?
Messika uses EU ring sizes, which measure the inside circumference of the ring in millimetres. Size 52 is a UK L 1/2 and a US 6, and size 54 is a UK N 1/2 and a US 7. Messika says its rings fit true to standard sizing, so your usual size should work.
