Bernadette Pull Rhye Embroidered in Blue Berry Embroidery on Grey Melange | Sweaters | Coveti

An embroidered sweater is a knitted pullover with thread worked into its surface after the knitting is finished, so the motif sits on top of the cloth instead of being knitted into it. This season’s new arrival at Coveti is the hand-embroidered Pull Rhye from Bernadette Antwerp, which sits within a wider edit of designer sweaters and luxury knitwear that runs from a $730 wool jumper to a $6,790 couture pullover.

Americans say embroidered sweater, the British say embroidered jumper; it is the same garment. What separates a good one is how the embroidery was made, what yarn carries it, and where the motif sits. This guide covers all three, then how to wear it.

The hero piece: Bernadette Pull Rhye Embroidered

Bernadette was founded in Antwerp in 2018 by Charlotte de Geyter and her mother, Bernadette de Geyter. Charlotte trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and draws the house prints by hand, and the same orchard of motifs returns season after season: cherries, blackberries, hydrangea, delphinium. The Pull Rhye takes that vocabulary off the printed silk and puts it onto wool.

The facts, from the house: blue berries embroidered throughout a soft grey melange knit, a classic round neckline, and a short but loose silhouette. The yarn is 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere. It is made and hand-embroidered in India, and the house says it fits true to size. Knits are cut in letter sizes from XS to XL, where a size S matches EU 36 and UK 8, and the model in the house images is 168cm and wears an XS.

The short, loose cut matters more than it first appears. A cropped body with room through it sits on the natural waist of a high skirt and over the waistband of wide trousers without bunching, which is why a short knit and a long skirt make such a natural pair.

The rest of the Bernadette knit shelf

Coveti carries six Bernadette sweaters in stock this season, priced from $890 to $1,280. Three of them are embroidered. The other three use different knitting techniques. Seen side by side, they show what embroidery adds.

The Pull Sharon carries the house cherry as embroidery, offered on grey melange and on cream. The Kane Sweater carries the hydrangea as intarsia, which means the colours are knitted into the fabric itself, so the flower is flat and the back of the knit shows the colour changes. The Katt Sweater is pointelle, an openwork stitch that makes its pattern from small eyelets instead of added colour. For the full knit edit, read our Bernadette Antwerp knitwear guide.

Hand embroidery and machine embroidery

Both are legitimate. They simply produce different objects. Machine embroidery is fast and exact: every motif is identical, the stitch length is uniform, and the thread usually sits flat and tight against the knit. Hand embroidery is slower and slightly irregular in the best sense. Each berry is a little different from its neighbour, satin stitches can be padded so the motif stands proud of the surface, and the tension is set by a person who can feel how much a stretchy knit will give.

That last point is the technical reason hand work suits knitwear. A knit moves, and an embroidery stitched too tightly will pucker the fabric around it. A skilled hand embroiderer adjusts the tension stitch by stitch. On the Pull Rhye, and on the two Bernadette embroidered cardigans this season, the house states the embroidery is done by hand in India. Where a product page does not say so, we do not assume it. Magda Butrym is the one other house in this edit that names hand embroidery in the product title itself, on its Cashmere sweater with hand-embroidered logo in beige, $4,150.

Yarn: what carries the embroidery

The base yarn decides how the sweater wears, how warm it is, and how well it holds a stitch. The Pull Rhye is 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere: the wool gives body and spring so the embroidery has something firm to sit on, while the cashmere softens the hand against the skin. Elsewhere in this edit the fibre is stated only where the house names it in the product title, and we have kept to those names: merino wool and wool-cashmere at Carolina Herrera, wool and cashmere at Max Mara, wool at Dries Van Noten, a ribbed knit at Destree.

As a general rule, a firmer wool knit holds raised embroidery better than a very fine, loose cashmere, which is one reason many houses blend.

Placement: where the motif sits

An allover scatter, as on the Pull Rhye and the Pull Sharon, is the most wearable placement because no single spot carries the eye. A centred chest motif reads more graphic, closer to a crest. A motif concentrated at the neckline frames the face and works best with the hair up. Embroidery at the hem and cuffs is the most discreet and survives a coat being worn over it.

Think about what you will wear on top. A scatter shows through the open front of a jacket; a chest motif disappears under one.

Other houses worth knowing

Coveti’s live catalogue on 8 November holds 13 embroidered sweaters from the six houses below, priced from $730 to $6,790. Add the three Bernadette pieces and the field is 16 sweaters in stock.

Carolina Herrera works its roses and florals on dark, grown-up grounds, which makes these the most formal sweaters here.

Oscar de la Renta sits at the top of the price range, with botanicals, peonies and hibiscus, some of them beaded.

Max Mara, Dries Van Noten, Jacquemus and Destree hold the entry end of the edit, all under $1,300.

How to wear an embroidered jumper for the holidays

The simplest holiday formula is the house’s own: a short embroidered knit over a long skirt. Bernadette pairs its embroidered cardigans with Skirt Chuck, and the same logic applies here: the Long Skirt Chuck in Ivory, $1,150, under the grey Pull Rhye gives a pale, wintry column for a Christmas lunch. For an evening, swap the ivory for the Skirt Callum in Black, $1,390, add a heel, and the knit reads as deliberate instead of casual.

When the invitation calls for a dress, our Christmas party dresses guide covers the full range.

And beyond December

Berries and cherries are orchard motifs, not seasonal ones, so a Bernadette embroidered sweater keeps working through January with straight jeans, into spring over a printed midi, and back again in autumn. Keep the rest of the outfit plain when the motif is busy, and let a single colour from the embroidery repeat elsewhere: blue earrings with the Pull Rhye, a red lip with the Pull Sharon.

Caring for embroidered knitwear

Follow the care label first. Beyond that, Coveti’s general advice for embroidered wool and cashmere is to wash rarely, by hand in cool water with a wool detergent, inside out so the embroidery is protected, and never to wring. Press the water out in a towel and dry the sweater flat, easing it back to shape. Fold it, never hang it, and store it with cedar. If a thread catches, do not pull it: take it to a specialist.

Embroidered sweaters around the world

United States. Searches peak from Thanksgiving into the December holidays, and the embroidered sweater is a natural choice for family gatherings and holiday photographs. In the colder states it is worn as a true layer under a wool coat, so choose a placement that shows at the collar.

United Kingdom. The embroidered jumper is a Christmas Day and Boxing Day piece, worn indoors in heated houses and out to the pub. A wool and cashmere blend suits the damp cold.

Europe. Christmas markets and long Alpine weekends call for real warmth, and the short, loose cut layers well over a fine turtleneck when temperatures drop well below freezing.

The Gulf (GCC). The cooler months are the social season, with evening gatherings outdoors in the desert and at home. A wool and cashmere sweater suits a cool desert night. For modest dressing, pair a short knit with a long skirt such as the Long Skirt Chuck, and check sleeve length on the product images before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is an embroidered sweater?

An embroidered sweater is a knitted pullover with thread stitched onto its surface after knitting, so the motif sits on top of the fabric. This differs from intarsia, where the colours are knitted into the cloth itself. In Britain the same garment is usually called an embroidered jumper.

Is the Bernadette Pull Rhye hand-embroidered?

Yes. Bernadette states the Pull Rhye Embroidered is made and hand-embroidered in India. Its blue berry embroidery sits on a grey melange knit of 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere. It costs $1,230 at Coveti.

How does the Bernadette Pull Rhye fit?

The house says it fits true to size and is designed for a short but loose silhouette. Knits come in XS to XL, where a size S matches EU 36 and UK 8. The model in the house images is 168cm and wears an XS.

How much does a luxury embroidered sweater cost?

In Coveti’s live catalogue on 8 November 2026, the 16 embroidered sweaters in this guide run from $730 to $6,790. The three Bernadette pieces sit between $1,230 and $1,250. Price rises with hand work, beading and the density of the motif.

How do you tell hand embroidery from machine embroidery?

Look for slight variation between repeated motifs, padded stitches that stand proud of the knit, and a neat reverse with secured ends. Machine work is uniform and usually sits flat. When in doubt, rely on what the house states on the product page.

How should you wash an embroidered wool sweater?

Follow the care label first. As a general rule, wash rarely by hand in cool water, inside out, with a wool detergent, then press the water out in a towel and dry flat. Fold it for storage instead of hanging it.
