How to Tie a Scarf on a Bag: 5 Ways With a Silk Band

A silk band tied to a bag handle changes a plain bag in thirty seconds, and it protects the handle from hand cream and wear. It is often called a twilly. Valextra makes long, narrow silk bands designed to be tied to its handles, and Coveti carries 14 of them. Here are five ways to tie one, and which bags suit each.

Key facts

  • What to use: a long narrow silk band, about 5 cm wide and 86 cm long, works best.
  • Best bags: top handle bags with a fixed handle, such as the Iside and the Milano.
  • Why: it adds colour and protects the leather handle.
  • Care: silk is dry clean only; untie it before rain.
  • At Coveti: 14 Valextra silk bands.

1. The full wrap

Tie one end to the base of the handle with a small knot, wind the band around the handle in even, slightly overlapping turns, and knot it again at the other end. Tuck the ends. This is the cleanest look, and it covers the handle completely.

2. The bow

Fold the band in half, loop it around the handle where it meets the bag, and tie a simple bow with the ends left long. It is the easiest way and suits small bags such as the Iside Mini.

3. The single knot

Tie a single knot at the base of one handle and let both ends hang. It works on a tote and a bucket bag where a wrap would be too much.

4. The half wrap

Knot the band at one end of the handle and wrap only halfway across, finishing with a loose knot at the top. The leather and the silk both show.

5. Two bands

On a two-handle bag such as the Milano, tie a matching band to each handle with a bow. It balances the bag.

Choosing a band

Pick a colour that picks up a shade in the bag and in what you wear most. A black and white band works on any bag; a bright print lifts a neutral one. Long, narrow bands are easier to wrap than square scarves, which need folding into a strip first: fold the square corner to corner, then in on itself until it is about 5 cm wide.

Caring for silk on a bag

Untie the band before rain, since wet silk can mark leather with dye. Iron it on a low setting under a cloth when it creases, and dry clean it when it gets grubby. Rotate two bands so the handle never wears one look for too long.

Other ways to dress a bag

A leather charm is the other quick way to change a bag. Valextra makes 31 at Coveti, from sports balls to animals, and they clip to a handle in seconds. See designer bag charms for more.

Which bags suit a scarf

Structured top handle bags carry a band best. The Valextra Iside Mini and the Milano are the obvious choices. Silk bands and scarves from other houses are in the scarves edit.
