Who Is Valextra? The Milan Leather House With No Logo on the Outside
Valextra is a leather goods house from Milan, founded in 1937 by Giovanni Fontana in Piazza San Babila. It began with luggage and briefcases for travelling businessmen, won a Compasso d’Oro for its 24 Ore briefcase in 1954, and is now best known for the Iside handbag and for small leather goods that people keep for decades. Valextra puts no logo on the outside of anything it makes, which is why it comes up so often in conversations about quiet luxury. Coveti now carries 596 new Valextra pieces, 266 of them bags, from $370 to $10,420. This is the short history of the house and the pieces to know.

From a suitcase shop to a design prize
Giovanni Fontana opened Valextra in 1937 with a workshop above the shop, where he worked with a model maker on new shapes for luggage and briefcases. The house filed patents through its first decades, and in 1954 its 24 Ore briefcase, a slim case sized for an overnight business trip, won the very first Compasso d’Oro, the Italian industrial design prize. That history still shapes the house. A Valextra bag is drawn like a piece of design first: how it opens, how it stands and how the strap meets the body are worked out before the colour is chosen.
The codes that mark a Valextra piece
Once you know them, the house codes are easy to learn: no logo on the outside, Millepunte grained calf leather, a V notch cut into card slots and pockets, and the black lacquered Costa edge painted by hand along every seam. The logo, along with a code that identifies the artisan who made the piece, sits on the inside. Millepunte, which means a thousand points, is the house grained calf: the fine grain hides scratches and holds an even colour. The Costa edge is the black lacquered line that runs along every cut edge, and it is the one detail that gives a plain Valextra bag away from across a room.
The bags to know
The Iside, introduced in 2011, is the signature: a geometric flap bag with a twist-lock clasp, carried by the top handle and on a strap. the Iside guide explains every size. The Tric Trac goes back to the late 1960s and still snaps shut with the click that gave it its name. The Milano is a two-handle bag whose belt cinches the sides, the Mochi is a soft, rounded zip-top bag, and the Soft Bucket has a curved pocket shaped like the windows of the first Milan boutique. the Valextra bags guide goes through every family.
Small leather goods
Many people meet Valextra through a card case. The Tallone coin purse dates from 1948 and closes with no fastening at all, and the Grip wallet, named after its metal note grip, goes back to 1951. Card cases, key holders and passport holders all carry the V notch and the Costa edge. Valextra wallets and card holders covers the range.
Where Valextra sits today
Valextra is still based in Milan, with its flagship in a nineteenth century palazzo on Via Manzoni. It sits in the same conversation as The Row, Bottega Veneta and Loewe: houses that sell on material and construction rather than a logo. brands like Valextra compares them, and is Valextra worth it weighs up the price.
