How to Wear a Chain Belt with Dresses and Jeans

0

To wear a chain belt, fasten it at the narrowest point of your waist over a fitted dress, let it sit loose and low on the hips over jeans and a longer top, then leave the clasp end and any charm hanging at the side. Choose the size by measuring wherever you plan to wear it, because a waist and a hip placement need different lengths. Keep other jewellery gold to match, and let the belt be the one piece of hardware that catches the light.

A chain belt is jewellery for the waist. It defines shape like a leather belt, yet it moves, catches light and adds a little sound when you walk. The worked examples here come from Zimmermann Resort 2027, now on Coveti, led by the Zimmermann Plume Chain Belt in antique gold: 16 karat gold plated brass in jewellery inspired links with a logo charm and a clasp closure for an adjustable fit.

What does a chain belt do?

A chain belt does three practical jobs. It marks the waist, giving shape to a dress that would otherwise fall straight. It breaks up a long line, so a maxi dress and a full length jean look more deliberate. It also acts as jewellery, adding metal at the middle of the body where necklaces and earrings never reach.

Unlike a leather belt, it rarely holds anything up. Think of it as decoration that happens to sit where a belt would, and you will place it with more freedom.

Where should a chain belt sit?

There are three placements, and each suits a different silhouette.

  • Natural waist: the narrowest part of the torso, just above the belly button. Best over fitted bodices and dresses with a defined waist seam.
  • Drop waist: a few centimetres lower, roughly at the top of the hip bones. Best over drop waist dresses and long tunics.
  • Low on the hips: slung loose so it dips at the front. Best over jeans, untucked shirts and relaxed maxi dresses.

A useful check in the mirror: a chain belt should follow a seam already in the garment, unless it is deliberately creating a new line where there was none. Avoid placing it a few centimetres away from an existing seam, which looks accidental.

How to wear a chain belt with a dress

The easiest way to start. Pick a dress where the waist is already the point of interest and simply add the chain on top.

Dress Belt placement Why it works
Clash Denim Boatneck Dress Natural waist Sits on the join between the structured bodice and the flared skirt
Clash Lantern Midi Dress Drop waist Follows the dropped waist line above the full skirt
Clash Spliced Maxi Dress Low on the hips Echoes the low waist and its striping
Denim Sash Mini Dress Natural waist, sash removed Replaces the fabric sash with metal
Clash Print Bow Midi Dress Natural waist, belt removed Swaps the removable belt for chain

Over a fitted denim dress

The Clash Denim Boatneck Dress is fitted on the body in mid weight comfort stretch denim, with a ruched boat neckline, a structured bodice, a softly flared skirt and antique enamel snap closures. Clip the Plume Chain Belt at the natural waist, right where the bodice meets the skirt. The antique gold reads beautifully against deep blue denim, and it ties in with the enamel snaps. Add flat sandals for day and a sculptural heel for evening. For more denim dress ideas, see our sibling guide on how to style a denim dress.

Over a drop waist dress

The Clash Lantern Midi Dress is a sleeveless silk organza midi with a dramatic drop waist, a round neckline and a full, tulle backed skirt in an ornamental print of warm, earthy hues. It comes with a separate jersey slip. A chain worn high would fight that line. Wear the belt loose along the dropped waist so it traces the start of the skirt. Because the fit is relaxed and oversized, let the belt rest rather than cinch.

Over a flowing maxi dress

The Clash Spliced Maxi Dress is a georgette gown with batwing cape sleeves, a plunging neckline and tri coloured striping that runs down through a low rise waist to a high low hem. Here the chain belt should sit low on the hips, following the waist and its stripes. It gives a relaxed, almost seventies feel to a full length gown, perfect for a long lunch and a summer party.

Swapping the belt a dress comes with

Two dresses in the drop come with their own fabric belts, which is an open invitation. The Denim Sash Mini Dress has a removable draped sash over lightweight denim shirting with billowing sleeves and gold snap closures. The Clash Print Bow Midi Dress, in a black floral linen and silk blend, has a removable belt at the waist above a full flared skirt. Take off the fabric piece and clip on the chain instead: the shape stays, the mood changes from day to evening.

How to wear a chain belt with jeans

With jeans, the chain belt works best when it is visibly decorative. A few rules:

  1. Wear a longer top untucked, so the belt has fabric to sit on. A shirt tail is ideal.
  2. Sling the belt low on the hips so it dips slightly at the front.
  3. Avoid threading it through belt loops, which hides the chain and makes it look like a substitute for a leather belt.
  4. Choose a high waisted jean with a clean front, so the two lines of waistband and chain do not compete.

Try the Stripe Boxy Shirt, a relaxed cotton and silk blend in blue and white stripes with a shirt tail hem and side splits, worn loose over the Denim Tailored Pant, a high rise, wide leg jean with a sailor waistband, front pleats and gold buttons. The chain sits on the shirt across the hips, well below the waistband. For a slimmer line, the Denim Flare Jean works the same way. Our Zimmermann denim guide covers the full denim range.

Why do chain belts look so good?

Mostly because of contrast. Soft fabric next to hard, polished metal draws the eye to the waist, and a chain moves as you walk where a leather belt stays still. Gold at the centre of the body also reflects light up toward the face, much like a necklace does. When the rest of an outfit is quiet, the belt becomes the detail people remember.

How do you size a chain belt?

Measure first, and measure at the height you plan to wear it. A belt for the natural waist and a belt for the hips can be a whole size apart.

  • Wrap a tape measure where the belt will sit, snug but not tight.
  • The Plume Chain Belt is offered in S, M and L sizing, and the brand points to its own size guide for belts.
  • The Zimmermann size guide lists body waist measurements from 62 to 85 centimetres and hips from 86 to 111 centimetres across its sizes 0P to 4. Compare your measurement with the guide on the product page.
  • If you will wear the belt low on the hips over clothing, allow for the extra layer, and choose the larger of two sizes when in doubt. The clasp gives some adjustment.

Our Zimmermann size guide sets out the full conversion: Zimmermann 0P, 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 correspond to UK 6P, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16.

Which side should a chain belt fasten on?

There is no fixed rule for chain belts. Fasten the clasp at the centre front if the charm is the feature, then let the end hang straight down. Alternatively, shift the clasp to one hip for a relaxed look, and let the charm fall to that side. A good tip is to put the charm on the opposite side to your bag strap, so the two do not tangle.

What is the belt buckle rule?

The rule most stylists follow is to match the metal of your belt hardware to your other metals: jewellery, bag hardware and shoe trims. With an antique gold chain, wear gold earrings, gold chains and shoes with gold detail. The Idle Chain Belt is a second Zimmermann chain belt if you want an option to compare.

Gold footwear helps finish the look. Our Zimmermann shoes guide helps you find a pair with gold detail to match this belt.

  • Lunch: fitted denim dress, belt at the natural waist, small gold earrings.
  • Summer party: flowing maxi dress, belt slung low, hair loose.
  • Evening: black floral midi with the fabric belt swapped for chain, sculptural heel.
