Italian Leather Bags: Leather Types Explained and the Houses That Make Them
Italian Leather Bags: Leather Types Explained and the Houses That Make Them
Italian leather bags are handbags cut from hides tanned and finished in Italy, and the best of them are also made in Italy, which is a separate claim you should check on the label. The leathers you will meet most often are calf, lambskin, nubuck, suede, pebbled and spazzolato, and each one feels, ages and needs care differently. Every one of the 120 Mansur Gavriel pieces Coveti stocks is labelled Made in Italy, and you can compare them with other houses in our designer bags edit, and read our Mansur Gavriel bags guide.
Key Facts
- “Italian leather” describes the hide; “Made in Italy” describes where the bag was made. They are different claims.
- Nubuck is sanded on the grain side of the hide; suede is sanded on the flesh side.
- Spazzolato is Italian for brushed, and in bags it describes a polished, glossy leather.
- All 120 Mansur Gavriel pieces at Coveti are labelled Made in Italy, priced from $390 to $1,710.
- Loewe was founded in Madrid in 1846 and still works from a Madrid workshop.
What makes a bag Italian leather?
Two phrases get used interchangeably, and they should not be. “Italian leather” tells you where the hide was tanned and finished. “Made in Italy” tells you where the bag itself was cut, stitched and assembled. A bag can carry the first without the second.
By Far is a useful example of the distinction. The label’s bags are made in Bulgaria, where its founders partnered with a family-run factory, and Harrods describes them as built from Italian leather. That is an honest description, and it is not the same as Made in Italy.
What does the Made in Italy label mean?
Italian rules reserve the Made in Italy label for goods made entirely in Italy and for goods whose last substantial transformation took place there. A bag designed in Italy but manufactured elsewhere does not qualify, and misuse of the label is a criminal matter under Italian law. For a shopper, the practical step is simple: read the product page and the label inside the bag, and look for the words Made in Italy, not just Italian leather.
Types of Italian leather, explained
Here is how the main leathers compare, with an example of each from the Mansur Gavriel pieces we stock.
| Leather | How it is made | Look and feel | Care | Mansur Gavriel example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calf | Hide of a young cow, smooth grain | Supple, dense, holds shape | Low; wipe with a dry cloth | Helios in Black |
| Lambskin | Hide of a lamb, fine grain | Very soft, light, buttery | Higher; scuffs and marks more easily | Juno Tote |
| Nubuck | Grain side lightly sanded | Velvety, matte, fine nap | Brush and protective spray | Everyday Cabas in Sabbia Nubuck |
| Suede | Flesh side sanded | Soft, deep nap, thinner | Highest; dislikes rain | Everyday Soft Tote in Chocolate Suede |
| Pebbled | Tumbled, embossed with a pebble grain | Textured, relaxed | Low; grain hides scratches | Everyday Zip Tote |
| Spazzolato | Buffed to a polished shine | Glossy, smooth | Low; occasional buff | Gaia Shoulder Bag |
Calf leather
Calf is the workhorse of Italian leather goods. Its dense fibres resist abrasion and stretching, which is why it suits bags you carry every day. Soft calf is a supple version that creases gently with use. The Helios in Black is cut from Italian soft calf and lined in Italian suede, and the Candy Hobo in Chocolate uses the same leather with a soft calf suede lining.
Lambskin
Lambskin is softer and lighter than calf, with a fine grain and a buttery hand. The trade-off is durability: it shows scuffs and corner wear sooner, and it needs more careful storage. It suits bags that are handled gently, like evening bags and soft totes. The Juno Tote in Black is in Italian lambskin and still takes up to a 16-inch laptop, while the Mini Cloud Clutch uses lambskin for its gathered evening shape.
Nubuck
Nubuck is made from the grain side of the hide, the outer surface, which is lightly sanded to raise a fine nap. Because it keeps the tougher outer layer, it is generally more robust than suede, though it still marks. The Everyday Cabas in Sabbia Nubuck is a good example: Italian nubuck, unlined, at 26.5 x 34 x 17 cm.
Suede
Suede comes from the flesh side of the hide, the inner layer. It is thinner, softer and more porous than nubuck, with a deeper nap, and it is the most vulnerable to dirt and water. Treat it with a water-repellent spray before the first wear. Mansur Gavriel uses several kinds: plain Italian suede on the Everyday Soft Tote in Chocolate Suede, kid suede on the Gnocchi Bag and oiled suede on the Seaweed Village pieces. Our guide to suede tote bags goes further on care.
Pebbled leather
Pebbled leather has a raised, irregular grain. It can develop naturally when leather is tumbled, but most pebbled leather is embossed, pressed with a patterned plate after tanning and dyeing. The texture does not make the hide harder, but it does make small scratches far less visible. The Everyday Zip Tote in Black is in Italian pebbled leather, a sensible choice for a work bag.
Spazzolato leather
Spazzolato means brushed in Italian, but in leather goods it usually describes a polished, high-shine finish created by extensive buffing. It is softer in tone than patent and easier to live with. The Gaia Shoulder Bag in Claret is Italian spazzolato leather with a zip closure, at $760.
Other finishes you will see
Patent and soft patent are coated leathers with a lacquered shine. Naplak is a laminated kid suede with a metallic sheen. Croc-embossed and stamped leathers are pressed with a pattern, like the Oxblood Croc pieces in the Mansur Gavriel line. Ponyhair is haircalf, leather with the short hair left on.
Which designer houses make bags in Italy and Spain?
Mansur Gavriel
Mansur Gavriel was founded in 2013 by Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel, and describes its goods as “dreamt up in New York City and crafted with artisans around the world”. At Coveti, every one of the 120 pieces we stock is labelled Made in Italy on the brand’s product page. The range covers Italian calf, soft calf, pebbled, tumbled, spazzolato, lambskin, nubuck, suede, kid suede and patent. If price is your question, our piece on whether Mansur Gavriel is worth it weighs it up.
The Row
The Row was founded in 2006 and takes its name from London’s Savile Row. Retailer listings give Made in Italy for styles including the Margaux top-handle bag and the Park shoulder bag in calf leather. Shop the range on the The Row brand page, and check each product page, since origin is stated per style.
Khaite
Khaite’s handbags are designed in New York and crafted in Italy, according to Fashionphile, and retailer listings give Made in Italy for styles such as the Blake crossbody and the Crosby bag. See the current pieces on the Khaite brand page.
Toteme
Retailer listings give Made in Italy for several Toteme bags, including the T-Lock tote in leather and in suede and the Belted Bucket bag. Browse them on the Toteme brand page.
Loewe, the Spanish alternative
Loewe is the reference for Spanish leather. The house was founded in Madrid in 1846 as a small leather workshop and its main workshop is still in Madrid. Harrods states that the Puzzle bag is handmade in Madrid from 75 pieces of leather. Find the house on the Loewe brand page.
How to tell a quality Italian leather bag
Start with the label: Made in Italy on the product page and inside the bag. Then look at the edges. Painted edges should be smooth and even, with no cracking at the corners. Check the lining, because a suede, lambskin and canvas lining tells you more about a bag than a printed logo does. Unlined bags, like several Mansur Gavriel Cabas styles, are a deliberate choice, and they let you see the reverse of the leather for yourself.
Finally, smell and touch. Good leather has a clean, warm smell, not a chemical one, and it should feel consistent across the whole bag.
How to care for Italian leather
Store bags stuffed with tissue in their dust bags, upright and out of direct sun. Wipe smooth calf and pebbled leather with a soft, dry cloth. Brush nubuck and suede in one direction with a suede brush, and spray them before the first wear. Keep lambskin away from rough surfaces and sharp keys. For autumn winter 2026/27, when rain and heavy coats are part of the day, a pebbled calf bag is the easiest leather to keep looking new.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Italian leather and Made in Italy?
Italian leather means the hide was tanned and finished in Italy. Made in Italy means the bag itself was made in Italy. A bag can be built from Italian leather and made elsewhere, so check the label for both.
Which Italian leather is the most durable for a handbag?
Calf leather is the most hard-wearing choice for daily use, because its dense fibres resist abrasion and stretching. Pebbled calf adds a texture that hides small scratches. Lambskin and suede are softer but need more care.
Is nubuck the same as suede?
No. Nubuck is sanded on the grain side of the hide, the outer surface, while suede is sanded on the flesh side. Nubuck is generally more robust, and suede is thinner, softer and more porous.
Are Mansur Gavriel bags made in Italy?
Every one of the 120 Mansur Gavriel pieces Coveti stocks is labelled Made in Italy on the brand’s product page. The brand says its goods are dreamt up in New York City and crafted with artisans around the world.
What does spazzolato leather mean?
