How to Care for a Leather Bag, and How to Store It
To care for a leather bag, keep it dry, keep it out of heat and strong light, keep oils and perfume off it, store it stuffed with tissue in a cotton pouch, and nourish it with a leather milk once to twice a year. That is the short version of the Ateliers Auguste care guidance, and it applies to any good calf leather bag; every designer leather bag at Coveti lists its leather so you know which rules apply.
Key facts
- Moisture: protect the bag from it; if the bag gets wet, blot it gently, never rub, let it dry naturally and never use heat (Ateliers Auguste care page and care guide).
- Stains: keep greasy substances, cosmetics and perfume off the leather; they can leave permanent marks.
- Heat and light: keep the bag away from radiators and long direct sunlight.
- Nourishing: a leather nourishing milk once to twice a year, a small amount, applied with a soft cotton cloth in circles.
- Storage: empty the bag, fill it with tissue paper, keep it in a breathable cotton pouch. Never plastic, never newspaper, never hung by its handles.
- Repairs: Ateliers Auguste gives a one-year guarantee and runs a repair service (the brand’s warranty page).
Every day
Most damage happens in the first minutes of a bag’s day, not in storage. Put on hand cream and perfume before you pick the bag up, not after. Do not put a light bag on your lap over dark denim; the brand warns that dark clothing can rub off on light leather. Put the bag on a chair, not the floor. And wipe it with a soft dry cloth when you get home: dust is abrasive, and a slightly damp cloth is enough for most marks, the brand’s care guide says.
Cleaning, by leather
| Leather | How it behaves | How to clean it |
|---|---|---|
| Box calf and smooth calf | Elegant, sensitive to fine scratches | Gentle circular motions with a soft cloth, light pressure, no greasy products |
| Grained calf | Very resistant, low maintenance | A simple cloth usually suffices; dirt rarely gets into the grain |
| Lizard- and croco-embossed calf | Easy to maintain, hides marks well | A soft cloth, with cotton swabs for the textured areas |
| Suede | Delicate, needs its own products | A crepe brush and a suede eraser; never water on a stain |
The table follows the brand’s own care guide. For every leather, test any cleaner on a hidden area first, and use one that is alcohol-free and solvent-free and made for leather goods; the guide suggests a gentle clean about every three months. Suede has its own page: how to clean a suede bag.
Nourishing and rain
Calf leather is a living material and needs feeding, but not often. Once to twice a year, apply a little leather milk with a soft cotton cloth, an old T-shirt is ideal, in circles, let it dry, and buff lightly. The brand warns that too much product softens the leather and can make a structured bag lose its shape. On rain, the house says its leathers are treated to resist it, so no water repellent is needed after purchase; you can add one once a year if you like, following the product’s instructions. For grained, embossed and suede leathers, a colourless protective spray is its suggestion; for smooth leather, a gentle water-based protector.
How to store a handbag
Store bags empty, stuffed lightly with tissue paper to hold the shape, each in its own breathable cotton pouch, in a dry place at a steady temperature. Stand them upright on a shelf. Do not hang them by the handles, which stretches them, and do not keep them in plastic, which traps moisture, in a damp basement, in an attic, in sunlight. Avoid newspaper as stuffing, which can transfer ink. And rotate your bags: the brand’s guide notes that rotation increases a bag’s life. It is the same advice for a $300 bag and a $3,000 one.
Hardware, lining and edges
Wipe the clasp and feet with a microfibre cloth, never anything abrasive. Turn the lining out when you can and brush it with a dry cloth. Check the corners and edges, which take the most friction, and stop a small scuff before it becomes a split. For anything more, the brand’s repair service is the place to start. Every Ateliers Auguste leather is described in our guide to its leathers.

Around the world
Average monthly Google searches, from Google Ads data read through DataForSEO on 7 November 2026:
| Search | Worldwide | United States | United Kingdom | UAE | Saudi Arabia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| how to store handbags | 3,600 | 1,600 | 390 | 20 | 10 |
| leather bag care | 590 | 210 | 70 | 10 | 10 |
People search for how to store a bag far more than for how to care for one: storage is the problem most owners notice first, when a bag comes out of a cupboard creased. Searches peak in January, after the Christmas gifts.
Climate changes the priorities. In humid places, the risk is mould in storage, so the cotton pouch and a dry shelf matter most. In dry heat, the risk is the leather drying out, so the yearly leather milk matters more. In wet cities, blot, never rub, and never dry with heat.
“Leather is a noble material, but it can easily become predictable,” Xavier Valembert told Style Essentials in March 2026. “For us, leather should not only look beautiful, it should age with dignity.”
Frequently asked questions
How do you take care of a leather bag?
Keep it dry, out of heat and strong light, free of oils and perfume; wipe it with a soft cloth; nourish it with leather milk once to twice a year; store it stuffed with tissue in a cotton pouch.
How should you store handbags?
Empty, lightly stuffed with tissue paper, in a breathable cotton pouch, upright on a shelf in a dry place. Never in plastic, never hung by the handles.
How often should you condition a leather bag?
Once to twice a year, with a small amount of leather milk. Too much softens the leather and can make a structured bag lose its shape.
What do you do if a leather bag gets wet?
Blot it gently, never rub, and let it dry naturally, away from any heat source.
Can you use baby wipes on a leather bag?
The brand recommends a soft dry cloth and, for cleaning, an alcohol-free, solvent-free leather cleaner tested on a hidden area first. Use that.
Does Ateliers Auguste repair bags?
Yes. The house gives a one-year guarantee and runs a repair service.
