La DoubleJ Silk Scarves: Sizes, Fabrics and How to Wear Them

0
The short answer. La DoubleJ names its square scarves by size: the Foulard 45, Foulard 90, Foulard 120 and Foulard 140 measure 45, 90, 120 and 140 cm a side. The 45 and 90 are 100% silk twill, crisp enough for a neck knot and a scarf top, while the 120 and 140 are a softer modal and silk blend for shawls and wraps. The long shapes are the 8 x 150 cm Skinny Scarf, the 130 x 40 cm Diamond Scarf, the 70 x 180 cm Scarf and the wool-silk Herald Scarf.

How La DoubleJ sizes its scarves

J.J. Martin founded La DoubleJ in Milan in 2015, and her first collection used prints from the archive of Mantero, one of the oldest silk houses in Como. The names are literal: the number after Foulard is the side of the square in centimetres. Most shade names also carry the word Placee, which means the print has been positioned for that piece so the motif lands where it should. Open the scarf out before you fold it and fold to show the part you like best.

The Foulard squares

Foulard 45

The small square, in 100% silk twill. The Foulard 45 in Florette Pale Pink is the easiest place to start: it ties neatly at the throat and rolls into a band long enough for a ponytail.

Foulard 90 and the reversible 90s

The Autumn Winter 2026 Foulard 90 in Alchemy Dark Red is silk twill with a placed print, big enough to tie as a top. The Reversible Fringe Foulard 90 in Buttercup White adds fringes and is reversible, so both faces are made to be seen.

Foulard 120 and Foulard 140

The two big squares switch to 85% modal and 15% silk with a frayed fringe edge, a blend that drapes more softly than twill. The Foulard 120 in Heath Mint works as a shawl over a summer dress. The Foulard 140 in Queen Peony Blue is large enough for a sarong at the beach and a wrap over a winter coat.

Full-On Foulard

The Full-On Foulard in Florette Fuchsia is the oversized one, silk twill with a whip stitch hem, and the brand notes it can be worn multiple ways.

The long scarves

The Herald Scarf is 200 cm long in 95% wool and 5% silk. The Herald Scarf 30 in Herald Black is 30 cm wide and sits neatly inside a coat collar, while the 50 cm version is wide enough to wrap twice. The Scarf in Coven Buttercream is a modal and silk stole from Autumn Winter 2026, 70 x 180 cm. Some continuing shades of the Scarf are listed at 70 x 170 cm, so check the product page.

The Skinny Scarf in Kells Blue Petrol is a strip of silk twill 8 cm wide with fringed ends, the most adaptable piece here. The Diamond Scarf in Coven Pink is hand sewn in silk twill. I like it wrapped once at the neck with the points left hanging at the front.

Knit and velvet stoles, and the La Scala Collar

The knits are made in Italy. The Cherry Scarf is an alpaca blend with an intarsia cherry, and the High Kick Scarf is a ribbed baby alpaca blend with a contrast feather trim at each end. The In My Power Knit Stole is an alpaca-blend stole, the Half-Light Scarf comes in wool-blend jacquard and mohair-blend versions, and the Crochet Triangle Scarf is a wool-blend triangle to knot over a coat.

The Ella 2-Ways Stole in Black is cotton velvet with embroidered pearl details, made in India. The La Scala Collar in Yellow is a separate collar in duchesse with an ostrich feather trim and an adjustable string closure. Tie it over a plain knit and it does the work of a necklace.

Silk twill, modal-silk and wool-silk

Silk twill has a fine diagonal weave and a light sheen. It holds a knot and a crisp fold, so it suits small ties and scarf tops. The modal-silk blend in the 120, the 140 and the 70 x 180 cm Scarf is softer and falls in looser folds, better for draping than knotting. Wool-silk, in the Herald Scarf, is the warm one, made for coats.

How to tie each size

  • Neck. Fold a square into a triangle, roll it from the long edge into a band, and knot it at the side of the throat. A 45 gives a neat neckerchief; a 90 gives a fuller knot.
  • Hair. Tie the same rolled band at the nape as a headband. A Skinny Scarf in a bow round a ponytail is even simpler.
  • Bag handle. Wrap a Foulard 45 round the handle in a spiral and knot the ends at the base. A Skinny Scarf does the same job with less bulk.
  • Top. Use a Foulard 90 for a bandana top, as below.

How to tie a scarf top

  1. Fold the Foulard 90 corner to corner into a triangle.
  2. Hold the long edge across your chest with the point facing down.
  3. Take both ends round your back and tie a firm double knot.
  4. Tuck the loose ends flat under the fold.

For more coverage, fold a Foulard 140 in half, wrap it under the arms and knot it at the front.

How to care for La DoubleJ scarves

The care label on each piece has the final word. Keep perfume and hairspray off silk, and steam creases out at a low setting instead of pressing hard. Fold knits flat so they keep their shape, and give the feather trims room in the drawer.
