Maticevski Size Guide: How Australian Sizing Converts, and How Each Shape Fits
Maticevski Size Guide: How Australian Sizing Converts, and How Each Shape Fits
Maticevski is cut in Melbourne on Australian sizing, and most of the questions we get about the label are about fit rather than style: will a sculpted bodice close, does the bonded cloth give, and what is an AU 10 in New York. This guide answers them with the house’s own product information. Maticevski cuts on Australian sizing, which is the same number as UK sizing, so an AU 8 is a UK 8, a US 4 and an EU 36. The number is the easy part. The cloth is what changes the fit, so below each fabric family gets its own advice, with the pieces we have in stock at Coveti right now.
Key facts
- Size system: Australian (AU), identical in number to UK sizing. Coveti shows every Maticevski piece on the UK ladder, so the number you see is the AU number.
- Conversions: AU 6 = US 2 = EU 34; AU 8 = US 4 = EU 36; AU 10 = US 6 = EU 38; AU 12 = US 8 = EU 40; AU 14 = US 10 = EU 42; AU 16 = US 12 = EU 44.
- The usual run: most styles are cut from AU 6 to AU 14, with some bonded pieces running to AU 16 and AU 18. Each product page on Coveti shows which sizes are in stock.
- Fabric decides the fit: bonded and structured pieces have almost no stretch; jersey, sequin and crepe pieces with elastane have some give; satin and georgette pieces are fluid.
- Made in: Melbourne, Australia, as stated on the house’s own product pages.
How Australian sizing compares
Australian and UK women’s sizes use the same numbers, so if you are a UK 10 you are an AU 10 at Maticevski. For the US, subtract four: an AU 10 is a US 6. For European sizing, add 28: an AU 10 is an EU 38. Those are the conversions the house’s own chart uses, and they are the ones printed on every Maticevski product page at Coveti. If you usually sit between two sizes in other labels, the fabric notes below tell you which way to go.
Bonded and structured pieces: size up if you are between sizes
Its signature is bonded fabric: two layers fused into one cloth that holds a sculpted curve without boning, and that is the cloth behind most of the season’s strongest shapes: the Invoke Dress, the Mustang Blouse, the Lash Dress and the Endure Top. Because the cloth holds its line, it does not ease over the bust and hip the way a knit would. The construction line on these product pages reads “Unlined” with a side zip and back zip, and none of them carries elastane. If you are between sizes, take the larger and have the waist taken in; a bonded seam is easy for a tailor to adjust inwards and hard to let out.
Stretch pieces: take your usual size
The pieces that carry elastane in their composition have more give. The Radiance Gown, the Scintilla Top, the Entreat Skirt and the Phantom Dress are all cut from the house crinkle, which is 78% polyamide, 20% silk and 2% elastane, and the Piper Wave Gown uses a sequin cloth with 5% spandex. On these, your usual size is the one to order: the cloth moves with you, and a size up will lose the close line through the body.
Satin and fluid pieces: true to size
Satin and georgette pieces drape rather than hold. The Gleam Skirt in white satin and the Endure Top in white satin are cut from an 82% triacetate satin, and the Marlowe Gown from a fluid triacetate blend. These follow the body loosely, so take your usual size and judge length rather than width. For a floor-length gown, check your height against the product photos: the hem is designed to brush the floor in a heel.
Strapless and fitted gowns
A strapless bodice has to fit the ribcage firmly. On the Friesian Gown, the Fixation Gown and the Kismet Dress, choose by your bust and underbust measurement first, then let the waist be adjusted. Our guide to wearing a bustier gown covers the fitting appointment in detail. For one-shoulder pieces such as the Claudine Gown and the Catapult Dress, the shoulder is the fixed point: if it sits right, the rest can be tailored.
What the measurements on some pages mean
A few Maticevski product pages carry a size table in centimetres for bust, waist and hip, and the house notes that it is a guide only because each style is cut differently. Where Coveti has that table, it sits in the size guide on the product page. Where it does not, use the conversions above and the fabric advice for that piece. If you need a measurement before you order, ask us: we can measure a piece in stock.

Frequently asked questions
What size system does Maticevski use?
Australian sizing. An AU size is the same number as a UK size, so an AU 10 is a UK 10. Coveti lists every Maticevski piece on the UK ladder.
Is Maticevski true to size?
Yes for stretch, satin and jersey pieces. Bonded pieces have almost no stretch, so if you are between sizes, take the larger and have it tailored.
What is an AU 8 in US sizing?
An AU 8 is a US 4 and an EU 36. Subtract four from the AU number for US sizing and add 28 for EU sizing.
Does Maticevski run small?
Not in number, but the bonded fabric does not give, so fitted bonded pieces can feel snug if you sit between sizes. Size up in that case.
What sizes does Maticevski make?
Most styles run from AU 6 to AU 14, and some bonded styles run to AU 16 and AU 18. Each product page on Coveti shows the sizes in stock.
Can Maticevski pieces be altered?
Yes. Bonded seams take in neatly, which is why the house fit advice is to size up when in doubt. Strapless gowns should be fitted at the bust first.
