Metallic Fringe Dresses: How to Choose, Wear and Care for Fringe

Fringe is the most kinetic thing you can wear: it moves before you do. In metallic cloth it catches every light in the room, which is why it comes back every party season. This guide covers how fringe dresses are made, which lengths suit which invitation, how to wear fringe without it wearing you, and how to look after it. The pieces shown are from Maticevski, whose Pre-Fall 2026 collection is built on metallic strips and fringe, with 38 fringe and metallic pieces in stock at Coveti from $1,500 to $12,300, and we point to other designers worth knowing.

Key facts

  • Two kinds of fringe: cut strips of cloth (heavier, sculptural, the Maticevski way) and thread fringe (light, swinging, the 1920s way).
  • Metallic cloth: usually a lame, a metallised blend; Maticevski uses 31% silk, 38% polyamide and 31% polyester for its flame and rose-gold pieces.
  • Lengths: a cropped fringe top for cocktail, a fringe midi for a party, a floor-length fringe skirt for black tie.
  • Care: specialist dry clean, store hanging, never folded.
  • In stock: 38 Maticevski fringe and metallic pieces at Coveti on 12 October 2026, $1,500 to $12,300.

How a fringe dress is made

There are two kinds. Thread fringe is a row of loose threads stitched to a band and sewn on in tiers, the classic flapper fringe; it is light and swings with every step. Cut-strip fringe is made by cutting the cloth itself into strips, often of varying widths and lengths, and sewing them to a structured base; it is heavier and holds more shape. Maticevski works in the second way. The Furnace Skirt lays vertical strips of metallic cloth over a full A-line, and the Fire Bomb Top lets strips fall like flames from a structured crop. The Firebloom Dress uses fine metallic fringe of uneven lengths over a strapless rose-gold base.

Which length for which invitation

For cocktail and a party, a fringe top and a fringe midi are both right. The Fire Bomb Top in rose pink with a black trouser is a party look that still works at dinner. The Kismet Dress, strapless in tiers of cream fringe ending at mid-calf, suits an engagement party and a summer wedding. For black tie, go to the floor: the Furnace Skirt, the Inferno Gown with its tiers of shimmering ribbon, and the Trailblaze Gown with a train. Designer feather dresses are the other way to wear movement at night.

How to wear metallic fringe

Wear one moving piece at a time. If the skirt is fringe, keep the top fitted and plain, and the reverse. Keep jewellery small, because fringe and big earrings tangle. Choose a sandal that shows the foot, so the hem does not catch. Sit carefully: fringe crushes under you, so on a long dinner choose fringe on the top half. In a metallic, one colour head to toe is easier than mixing metals.

Fringe as an accessory

If you want the movement without the commitment, wear fringe at the hip. The Maticevski Scintillate hip band is a fringed tie belt that sits low over a skirt and trouser alike, in black and in blush and ivory. Knot it at the side and let the tassels hang.

Caring for fringe and metallic cloth

Specialist dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is fringe so it is bagged. Store fringe hanging, never folded, and give it space so the strips do not crush. If the fringe tangles, separate it with your fingers, never a brush. Keep metallic cloth away from perfume and deodorant, which can tarnish the surface. Steam from a distance; never iron metallic strips.

Other designers for fringe

For thread fringe and beading, look at Rachel Gilbert and 16Arlington, which both work fringe and sequins into eveningwear. For sculptural fringe, Maticevski is the house to know. Our sculptural dresses guide covers the wider category.

Frequently asked questions

Are fringe dresses in style in 2026?

Yes. Metallic and fringe pieces are central to the Maticevski Pre-Fall 2026 collection, and fringe returns every party season.

What do you wear with a fringe dress?

A plain sandal and small jewellery. Let the fringe be the only moving thing in the outfit.

Can you wear a fringe dress to a wedding?

Yes, as a guest, in a colour that is not white. A fringe midi suits a cocktail wedding; floor-length fringe suits black tie.

How do you store a fringe dress?

Hanging, never folded, with space around it so the strips do not crush.

How do you clean a metallic fringe dress?

Specialist dry clean only. Never iron metallic strips; steam from a distance.

What is the difference between thread fringe and strip fringe?

Thread fringe is loose threads sewn in tiers and swings freely. Strip fringe is cut from the cloth itself and holds more shape.
