Metallic Dress Guide 2026: Silver, Gold and Brocade

A metallic dress gets its shine from metal-coated yarn woven into the cloth, from sequins, from beading. Brocade is the most wearable of the three because the metal sits inside a pattern. Markarian has built its Fall 2026 collection around silver and gold brocade, all made in New York and lined in silk. Shop the edit with our cocktail dresses at Coveti.

What makes a dress metallic?

There are three routes to shine, and each one behaves differently on the body.

  • Metallic weave. Lame and metallic brocade carry metal-coated yarn in the weave itself. Brocade adds a raised floral pattern, so the shine breaks up into highlights and shadow.
  • Sequins. Small reflective discs sewn onto a base fabric. They catch more light than any weave and move with you.
  • Beading. Beads give a deeper, heavier glint and a lot of weight at the hem.

Markarian uses all three. Its Fall 2026 brocade is a blend of 36% viscose, 33% cotton, 12% metallised polyester, 11% polyester and 8% polyamide, so the metal is a minority of the cloth. It reads as a soft sheen in daylight and a brighter glint under evening light, never a mirror finish. For the fabric in more depth, see our brocade dresses guide, and for the whole collection, Markarian Fall 2026.

Silver vs gold vs brocade: which metallic suits you?

Metallic How it reads Best occasions Markarian pieces
Silver brocade Cool, modern, quieter in daylight Black tie, winter balls, New Year’s Eve Ginevra Silver Midi Dress, Clover Silver Gown, Maisie and Mira
Gold brocade Warm, festive, more traditional Christmas parties, evening receptions Jasminium Gold Top, Pia Gold Midi Skirt
Gold sequins on black Graphic, high shine, very evening Cocktail parties, New Year’s Eve Lily top, Mirage skirt
Metallic stripe Bold pattern with a glint Cocktail weddings, dinners Amina Zebra-Striped Midi Dress

As a rule, silver flatters cooler skin tones and looks sharp with white and grey; gold warms olive and deeper skin tones and sits well with black and cream. Both work on everyone if you match your jewellery to the dress, not to your habit.

The silver metallics

Ginevra Silver Midi Dress

The Ginevra Silver Midi Dress is the Markarian corset midi with a flounced ruffle at the hem, cut close through the body with a rounded neckline and a low scooped back. It is the metallic dress I would buy first, because a midi in silver works at a wedding, a dinner and a party. Markarian suggests a slim metallic sandal and hair pulled back to show the back.

Clover Silver Gown

The Clover Silver Gown has a folded off-the-shoulder neckline, a slim column body and a back slit. In silver brocade it looks modern and quietly glamorous, a strong choice for black tie. For more long silver, see silver dresses and our ball gowns guide.

Maisie and Mira

The Maisie Silver Corset Top and Mira Silver Shorts are cut from the same silver brocade and look like a mini dress worn together. It is the metallic for dancing.

The gold metallics

Gold brocade is the more festive of the two. The Jasminium Gold Top is a fitted peplum with a V-neckline, and the Pia Gold Midi Skirt flares into a full A-line midi on a black waistband. Wear them as a set and you have the effect of a gold dress with a defined waist. Split, Pia with a black knit is the softest way to wear gold in the daytime. Our co-ord sets guide shows more ways to wear both.

For gold that leans graphic, the Lily Sequin Embellished Drape Top and Mirage Sequin Embellished Midi Skirt set hand-applied gold sequins on black dupioni. For a floor-length gold gown, see gold evening gowns.

A metallic with pattern: Amina

The Amina Zebra-Striped Midi Dress is a black and gold zebra stripe with an off-the-shoulder corset bodice and a back slit. Its blend includes 6% polyester metallic, so the gold stripe has a glint without the full shine of brocade. It is the pick if you want metallic without looking dressed for a ball.

How to wear a metallic dress, north and south

  • Northern winter. For a Christmas party in London and a December wedding in Toronto, add sheer black tights, a long black coat and a closed heel. Silver with black tights is especially clean.
  • Australian summer. A Sydney Christmas party and a New Year’s Eve harbour night call for bare legs and a strappy sandal. Midi lengths like Ginevra and Amina work better than full gowns in the heat.
  • Gulf evenings. For a wedding in Dubai, the floor-length Clover Silver Gown gives coverage with plenty of impact.

Keep the rest of the look plain. One metallic piece, one tone of jewellery, a small clutch. If the dress has a pattern, as brocade does, skip a printed bag. More party-season ideas are in New Year’s Eve dresses and holiday party dresses.

Which metallic for which dress code?

  • White tie and black tie. Go long. The Clover Silver Gown is the cleanest metallic answer, and floor-length brocade looks formal without beading.
  • Black tie optional and cocktail. A metallic midi is ideal. Ginevra in silver, Amina in black and gold, also the Jasminium and Pia set worn together.
  • Christmas party and New Year’s Eve. This is where sequins earn their place. Lily and Mirage in black and gold, Maisie and Mira in silver for dancing.
  • Daytime and Christmas Day lunch. Keep metallic to one piece, such as the Pia skirt with a cream knit.

If the invitation says black tie and you are unsure how far to go, our black tie dresses guide sets out the rules.

Caring for a metallic dress

Every Markarian brocade piece is dry clean only. Store it on a padded hanger, away from direct heat, and keep embellished areas covered. The sequin pieces, Lily and Mirage, are spot clean only. Hang brocade rather than folding it, because a hard crease shows on a metallic weave longer than on plain silk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a metallic dress?

A metallic dress is any dress whose fabric has a metal sheen, from metal-coated yarn woven in, from sequins, from beading. Lame and metallic brocade are the woven kinds.

Is metallic brocade the same as lame?

No. Lame is a smooth, all-over metallic fabric. Brocade weaves metallic yarn into a raised pattern, so the shine is broken up and softer. Markarian uses brocade for Fall 2026.

Can you wear a metallic dress to a wedding?

Yes, as a guest at an evening wedding. Choose a silver midi like the Markarian Ginevra, and avoid anything that reads as white in photographs.

Is silver better than gold for a winter party?

Neither wins outright. Silver looks sharp with black tights and a black coat; gold feels more festive with black and cream. Match your jewellery to the dress.

How do you clean a metallic brocade dress?

Markarian brocade pieces are dry clean only. Store them on a padded hanger away from direct heat, and keep embellished areas covered.
