Patou Iconic Trousers: Fit, Fabric and Styling

The Iconic trouser is the backbone of Les Essentiels, the permanent range
Patou keeps in production year to year rather than replacing each season. If you buy one thing
from the house to actually wear, it is probably this.

The cut

A straight leg, a gold-tone JP-engraved button and zip at the front, belt loops, two side
pockets and the signature darts at the back that give the seat its shape. It comes long and
regular, and in tailoring cloth and in denim.

The fabrics

• Virgin wool, 97 percent with 3 percent elastane, viscose lined, made in
  Romania. Around 590 euros at source. This is the one to buy for the office; the elastane
  is what stops it bagging at the knee.
• Organic cotton denim, 92 percent organic cotton with 8 percent recycled
  polyester, made in Bulgaria. Around 450 euros. Contrast stitching, engraved gold button.
• Sustainable technical wool twill, RWS virgin wool with elastane, in the
  flared and tailored variants.

The one sizing note that matters

The Iconic denim trousers sit on the hips. The house says that if you want
to wear them high-waisted, take one size below your usual. The wool versions sit at the natural
waist and need no correction. Everything else is true to size.

Styling

Anchor them with something narrow on top, a fine knit, a tucked shirt, and a flat leather
shoe. They are cut to break just above the shoe, so a heel lengthens the line and a flat keeps
it sober. Against La Patou Blouse they are the narrow half of
the house proportion, which is how the collection is designed to work.

Care

The wool versions want a trusted dry cleaner, which is what the house recommends. The denim
machine washes at 30C with similar colours. On the flared denim with the removable ornament,
take the ornament off first.
