Perfect Moment: the Chamonix flare

Thierry Donard, a professional skier and extreme-sports filmmaker, founded Perfect Moment in Chamonix in 1984 to dress his free-ride skiing and surfing team. Since 2010 Jane and Max Gottschalk have run it, and Jane’s creative direction has made fit the label’s calling card. The bestselling Polar Flare jacket has 10K waterproof fabric, 700-fill-power Allied down and RECCO, and the High-Waist Aurora Flare Ski Pant in Red is the matching flare. The knitwear is just as recognisable, with the North Star motif on sweaters such as the Star Dust Merino Wool Sweater in Black. Read the full Perfect Moment brand guide for the history.

Fusalp: French tailoring from Annecy

Fusalp was founded in Annecy in 1952 by two tailors, Georges Ribola and Rene Veyrat. Their breakthrough was the fuseau, a slim, tapered ski trouser, and the brand name is a contraction of “fuseau des Alpes”. Fusalp worked with the French Ski Federation on team kit, and the brand says it created the first competition ski suit at the 1966 World Championships in Portillo, Chile. After a quiet period in the 1980s, the Lacoste family took the brand over in 2013 and rebuilt it as a ski and city label.

Today Fusalp is the most tailored of the four. Jackets are slim, colour-blocking is graphic, and the trousers still nod to the original fuseau. It suits skiers who like a precise, classic French look rather than a statement silhouette.

Goldbergh: Dutch glamour

Goldbergh is a Dutch skiwear label from Amsterdam, founded by the sportswear designer Lieke van den Berg and the retailer Sandra Peet. Most retailer histories date it to 2009, while a few say 2010. The brand’s focus is women’s skiwear with a body-skimming fit, high-shine fabrics, faux fur trims and bold one-pieces, and it has grown into activewear too.

If Perfect Moment is playful, Goldbergh is glamorous. It is the brand to pick if your ski week is as much about the terrace and the party as the piste, and in our reading of retailer pricing it is often the most accessible of these four.

Bogner: Munich heritage since 1932

Bogner was founded in Munich in 1932 by Willy Bogner Sr., a Nordic skier, and Maria Bogner. After the Second World War, Maria Bogner is credited with the stretch ski pant, made from a flexible fabric with stirrups, which became so well known that the pants themselves were nicknamed “Bogners”. Most sources place it in the late 1940s.

Bogner is the most technical and the most traditional of the four, with a strong line in performance ski jackets and a younger, sportier sister label, Fire+Ice. It suits skiers who want heritage, precision and a polished, sporty look.

How Perfect Moment stands out

Against the other three, Perfect Moment wins on silhouette. No one else is as closely associated with the cropped down jacket over flared pants, and its range of prints, from houndstooth to snow leopard, is wider than most. It also offers ski pants in Regular (80 cm inseam) and Long (84 cm inseam), a 24-month warranty through authorised sellers, and RECCO on 33 colourways. One-piece fans should look at the Tignes Ski Suit in Houndstooth.

Where it loses ground: Fusalp’s tailoring is more classic, Goldbergh is more overtly glamorous, and Bogner has the longest technical track record. If you are deciding between Perfect Moment and a single heritage name, our Perfect Moment vs Moncler comparison is the next read.
