What is poplin?

Poplin is a plain weave cotton made with fine, tightly packed yarns. That gives it a smooth surface, a light weight and a crisp finish that holds a collar well. Stretch poplin adds a small amount of spandex, which helps a fitted shirt move with you and keeps it neat when tucked.

How to wear a poplin shirt

Tuck it into a skirt with volume, such as a fringe maxi, for the Simon Miller look. Wear it open over a bikini on holiday. With wide-leg trousers in the same stripe, it becomes a suit. Roll the sleeves to just below the elbow for a relaxed line.

Poplin vs oxford vs linen

Fabric Feel Best for
Poplin Smooth, crisp, light Fitted shirts, summer, the office
Oxford Textured, heavier Casual shirts
Linen Airy, creases easily Holidays, heat

How a good poplin shirt should fit

The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, and the buttons should lie flat across the bust without pulling. A fitted poplin shirt should tuck in without bunching at the waist; the Loch’s adjustable tie at the back helps with this. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone when your arms are by your side. If a shirt gapes at the bust, size up and use the tie to take in the waist.

Care

The brand marks the core Loch colours machine wash cold, do not bleach, tumble dry normal and iron on a low heat. Some stripe versions say dry clean for best results, so check the label. Iron poplin while slightly damp for the crispest finish.

Sizing

The Loch is true to size, per the brand, and the tie at the back adjusts the waist. See our Simon Miller size guide and the Simon Miller tops and shirts page.

Frequently asked questions

Does poplin wrinkle?

Less than linen. Stretch poplin wrinkles even less, and it presses quickly with a cool iron.

Is poplin good for hot weather?

Yes. It is light and breathable, which makes it a good summer shirt fabric.

Can you machine wash a poplin shirt?

Usually yes. The Simon Miller Loch in its core colours is machine washable per the brand; check the label on stripes.

What is the difference between poplin and cotton?

Poplin is a type of cotton weave. Not all cotton is poplin; poplin is the smooth, tightly woven kind.
