How to Layer a Shirt Under a Jumper, Step by Step
To layer a shirt under a jumper, choose a slim, light shirt and a jumper with a little room, button the shirt to the top and leave the collar out over the neckline, then let the cuffs show by a centimetre at each wrist. The hem can hang just below the knit, and a tuck gives a cleaner line. The shirt should be thinner than the knit, and the jumper should be a crew neck, a V-neck and a half-zip, never a polo neck. After that, the choices are which collar, which knit and how much shirt to show.
This guide works through the combinations step by step, explains which shirts and jumpers layer without bulk, and uses ME+EM, a brand that designs many of its Autumn Winter 2026 shirts and knits as matching layering pairs, for the examples.
The quick rules
| Jumper | Shirt | Collar | Hem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew neck | Slim poplin, voile | Out, over the neckline | Shows 1 to 2cm, tucked |
| V-neck | Any collared shirt, tie blouse | Inside, framed by the V | Shows, untucked |
| Knitted vest | Any shirt, any blouse | Out | Shows |
| Cropped jumper | Longline shirt | Out | Shows below the knit |
| Cardigan | Any | Out | Either |
Step 1: choose a shirt that layers
The shirt goes underneath, so it must be thin. Cotton poplin, cotton voile, silk and fine jersey all work; flannel, thick denim and heavy oxford cloth do not. The fit should be straight and close but not tight, and the sleeves should be slim so they slide into the knit.
- Crisp poplin: the Perfectly Proportioned Shirt in Blue ($390) is 100% cotton poplin cut straight, relaxed without excess bulk, and ME+EM sized it as a base layer under knits and blazers, with the hem just showing below the knit, and easy to tuck in.
- Weightless voile: the new Silk Cotton Cloud Layering Shirt in Chocolate ($340) is a semi-sheer silk and cotton blend designed to slot under knitwear with no bulk. It has an optional tie that can sit out at the neck. Also in Warm Cream ($340).
- A jersey cheat: the Layering Top in Light Cream ($340) has a soft jersey body and woven sleeves, so the collar, tie and cuffs show like a shirt while the body stays smooth under the knit.
Step 2: choose a jumper with room
A relaxed jumper layers more easily than a slim one, because the shirt needs space at the shoulders and arms. Look for a dropped shoulder and a sleeve wide enough for a cuff. Fine knits (merino, cashmere, silk blends) keep the layers thin.
- Ultimate Boyfriend Jumper in Dark Chocolate Brown ($620): brushed cashmere, relaxed with a slightly dropped armhole and a clean V-neck. The V frames a collar perfectly.
- High Neck Relaxed Jumper in Mid Grey Melange ($530): 100% cashmere, relaxed with dropped shoulders. The high rolled neck means the collar goes out over the top.
- High Neck Straight Jumper in Cocoa Brown ($430): merino, cashmere and silk, straight with slim sleeves; better with a voile shirt than a poplin.
- Relaxed Crop Jumper in Cream ($530): 100% cashmere, cropped, which lets a longer shirt show below.
Step 3: sort out the collar
With a crew neck, button the shirt to the top and pull the collar out over the neckline so both points lie flat on the knit. Leaving the top button undone makes the collar sag.
With a V-neck, keep the collar inside and let the V frame it; a tie blouse looks especially good here, with the bow sitting in the V. See our tie neck blouses guide.
With a high neck, wear a collar that is taller than the knit, and fold the points down over it.
Step 4: cuffs and hem
Push the jumper sleeve up a little and pull the shirt cuff over it, so a centimetre of cuff shows at each wrist. For the hem, decide on one of two looks. Hem showing: the shirt is 3 to 5cm longer than the jumper and hangs below it, relaxed. Hem tucked: the shirt is tucked into the trouser and the jumper sits over the waistband, sharper. A half tuck, jumper front tucked in at the buckle, works only if the shirt is tucked too.
The knitted vest: the easiest layer
A sleeveless knit over a shirt removes the sleeve problem altogether. The Henley Straight Knit Vest in Navy ($280) has a half-button placket that ME+EM added to make room for a shirt collar. The Boyfriend Knit Vest in Navy ($430) is relaxed cashmere with a high V-neck, and the Straight Knit Vest in Grey Multi ($470) is merino with an exploded argyle; both look right over a blue poplin shirt. Outfits: what to wear the layers with
- Office: blue poplin shirt, grey cashmere jumper, the Icon Trouser in Pecan Brown Multi ($570) in a wool check, and loafers.
- Weekend: Cloud shirt in chocolate, a cream crop jumper, the Tailored Barrel Jean in Authentic Dark Wash ($450) and trainers.
- Dinner: a silk tie blouse under a black V-neck, the velour AM-PM Wide-Leg Trouser in Black ($390) and a heel.
- Over it all: a coat with room in the sleeve, such as the Crop Swing Coat in Camel ($900), which has relaxed cocoon sleeves.

Common mistakes
- A thick shirt: bunches at the elbow and the shoulders. Swap to poplin and voile.
- A slim jumper: shows every button and seam. Size up and choose a relaxed fit.
- An open collar under a crew neck: the collar collapses. Button it.
- Two long hems: shirt and jumper the same length look accidental. Make one clearly longer, and tuck.
Frequently asked questions
Should you tuck a shirt in under a jumper?
Either works. Tucked looks sharper and suits trousers and skirts. Untucked, with the shirt 3 to 5cm longer than the jumper, looks relaxed and suits jeans.
Do you button the top button of a shirt under a jumper?
Under a crew neck, yes: buttoning keeps the collar standing so it lies flat over the knit. Under a V-neck you can leave it open.
What kind of shirt is best under a jumper?
A thin, straight shirt in cotton poplin, cotton voile and silk. ME+EM designs its Perfectly Proportioned Shirt and Cloud Layering Shirt specifically to sit under knitwear.
Can you wear a shirt under a crew neck jumper?
Yes. Button the shirt to the top and pull the collar out over the neckline, then show a little cuff at each wrist.
Should the shirt be longer than the jumper?
If you leave it untucked, yes, by 3 to 5cm, so the layering looks deliberate. A cropped jumper over a longer shirt is the easiest version.
What jumper is best for layering?
A relaxed jumper in a fine knit, with a dropped shoulder and a sleeve wide enough for a shirt cuff. A knitted vest is the easiest of all because there is no sleeve.
