Is cashmere better than wool for a coat?

Cashmere is softer, lighter and warmer for its weight, while wool is more hard wearing. A wool and cashmere blend gives most of the softness with more durability, which is why many designer coats use it.

What is the most classic wool coat?

A long camel wrap coat is the most classic, with Max Mara’s 101801 the best known example. A black double-breasted overcoat is the other wardrobe staple.

Are wool coats warm enough for winter?

Yes. A dense wool and cashmere coat is warm down to around freezing, especially in a long length with room for a knit underneath. For colder climates, choose shearling and down.

What is the difference between a peacoat and an overcoat?

A peacoat is short, double-breasted and cut from heavy wool, with broad lapels. An overcoat is longer, usually knee length and below, and is worn over tailoring.

How do I stop a wool coat from pilling?

Brush it after wearing, avoid friction from bag straps, and rest it between wears. Remove any pills with a cashmere comb instead of a razor.

What size wool coat should I buy?

Choose your usual size if you want room for a knit underneath; the fit note on each product page says when a coat is cut oversized.
