Is a shearling coat worth it?

Yes, if you live somewhere with real winters. Shearling is naturally warm, breathable and water resistant, and a well-made coat lasts for decades with care.

What is the difference between shearling and sheepskin?

Shearling is sheepskin tanned with the wool fleece left on. Sheepskin can also mean the hide with the wool removed, so every shearling coat is sheepskin but not every sheepskin is shearling.

Is shearling warmer than down?

For its weight, down is warmer, but shearling is warmer than wool and blocks wind well. A long shearling coat is warm well below freezing.

Can shearling get wet?

Light rain and snow are fine; shake it off and let the coat dry at room temperature, away from heat. Brush the suede once dry and avoid heavy rain.

How do I clean a shearling coat?

Brush the suede side with a soft suede brush and spot clean small marks. Have the coat cleaned by a leather specialist once a season, never in a washing machine.

How should a shearling coat fit?

Shearling is bulky, so choose your usual size and check that you can move your arms freely. It does not need room for a thick knit underneath.
