Silk Skirts: Twill, Satin, Crepe and Chiffon Explained, and How to Wear and Care for One
Silk Skirts: Twill, Satin, Crepe and Chiffon Explained, and How to Wear and Care for One
The short answer: a silk skirt is worth buying for how it moves and how long it lasts, and the weave decides how you wear it. Silk twill is the most practical, satin the dressiest, crepe de chine the softest, and chiffon the lightest. Layer silk over a fine knit in autumn, keep it away from heat and perfume, and it will outlive almost anything else in the wardrobe. Our pick is the Dries Van Noten Long wrap scarf-skirt in printed silk twill. Browse our satin and silk skirts and the full Dries Van Noten collection.
Silk is a natural protein fibre spun by the silkworm. It is strong for its weight, takes colour brilliantly, and drapes in a way synthetics still struggle to copy. “Silk skirt” draws around 33,000 searches a month worldwide, and much of the confusion is about the difference between silk and satin. Satin is a weave, not a fibre: a satin skirt can be silk, and it can be polyester. For more on that, read our guide to satin skirts.
Silk weaves compared
| Weave | Feel | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silk twill | Dense, diagonal rib, slight sheen | Printed scarf skirts, day wear | Very little; the most forgiving silk |
| Silk satin | Glossy face, matte back | Evening, bias-cut slip skirts | Shows creases and water marks |
| Crepe de chine | Matte, fine grain, soft | Pleated and fluid skirts | Can shrink if washed warm |
| Chiffon | Sheer, airy | Layered and ruffled skirts | Needs a lining; snags easily |
| Silk blends | Depends on partner fibre | Cotton silk satin, viscose silk | Care follows the more delicate fibre |
How to wear a silk skirt
In autumn and winter
Wear the silk skirt as the light layer. A fine merino roll neck tucked in, opaque tights, a flat boot and a long coat. Printed silk twill looks best against plain knits.
For the office
A midi silk skirt with a crisp shirt and a heeled loafer. A wrap shirt keeps the waist defined; see wrap tops for women.
For evening
A bias-cut satin skirt, a camisole and one strong ring. See statement rings.
For the weekend
A silk skirt, a white tee and a soft sneaker. The ballet sneaker is the shoe of the moment.
For long silk skirts, the proportions in how to wear a maxi skirt apply, and for tie skirts see how to wear a wrap skirt.
How to care for a silk skirt
- Read the label first. Many printed and structured silk skirts are dry clean only, because the dye and the interfacing matter more than the fibre.
- Hand wash only when the label allows, in cold water with a pH-neutral detergent, and never wring.
- Dry flat in the shade. Sunlight fades silk and weakens the fibre.
- Steam, do not iron hot. A steamer removes creases without the shine an iron can leave; if you iron, use a low setting on the reverse with a cloth.
- Perfume first, then the skirt. Alcohol and oils mark silk.

Frequently asked questions
Is silk the same as satin?
No. Silk is a fibre and satin is a weave. A satin skirt can be woven from silk, and it can be woven from polyester and viscose. Silk satin is the luxurious version.
Can you wear a silk skirt in winter?
Yes. Silk is a light insulator. Wear it over opaque tights with a fine knit tucked in, a flat boot and a long coat.
How do you wash a silk skirt?
Follow the label. If it allows hand washing, use cold water and a pH-neutral detergent, do not wring, and dry flat in the shade. Printed and lined silk skirts are usually dry clean only.
Which silk weave is the most practical?
Silk twill. Its dense diagonal weave resists creasing and water marks better than satin, which is why it is used for scarves and printed skirts.
Why are silk skirts expensive?
Silk is a natural fibre that takes thousands of cocoons to produce a few metres of fabric, and printed silk twill is often engraved and printed in many screens, which adds cost.
