Satin Skirts: How to Style Them Day and Night

0

A satin skirt is the quickest way to turn a jumper into an evening outfit: the sheen does the dressing up, so everything else can stay simple. The bias-cut ME+EM Bias Full-Length Skirt in Bay Green ($530) is our favourite this season. Browse the full range on our ME+EM page and in the skirts edit at Coveti.

This guide covers the main satin skirt shapes, how to style them by day and night, what to wear on top, the right shoes, and how to keep satin looking smooth.

Satin, satin-backed crepe and silk satin

Satin is a weave, not a fibre: the threads float over the surface to make one shiny face. It can be woven from silk, triacetate, viscose and polyester. ME+EM uses satin-backed crepe on most of its satin skirts: one side is satin, the other is matte crepe, and the fabric falls with a softer, more fluid drape than a stiff bridal satin. It also creases less, which matters on a long skirt you sit in all evening.

The main satin skirt shapes

Shape Length Best with
Bias cut Midi to full length A fine knit, a cropped satin top
Straight, elasticated waist Maxi A chunky jumper, a tucked shirt
Pleated Full length A fitted knit, a blazer
Slip skirt with lace Midi to maxi A matching lace cami

The ME+EM satin and evening skirts

Bias Full-Length Skirt. The Bias Full-Length Skirt in Bay Green ($530) is satin-backed crepe cut on the bias for a fluid drape, with a zip fastening. ME+EM designed it to wear with the matching Long Sleeve Crop Top in Bay Green ($470), a cropped satin-backed crepe top with a back zip, for a two-piece that reads as a dress.

Lace Trim Maxi Skirt. The Lace Trim Maxi Skirt in Dark Chocolate/Black ($570) is satin-backed crepe with contrast black lace, a straight maxi line, a side split and an elasticated waistband, so it is comfortable from day into night. Wear it with the Lace Trim Cami Top ($430) in the same colourway; our guide to lace cami tops has more.

Pleated Full-Length Skirt. For a different kind of shine, the Pleated Full-Length Skirt in Black ($570) is woven with silver metallic thread and falls in full-length pleats, with belt loops, pockets and a side split.

Full-Length Skirt in Gold/Brown. The Full-Length Skirt in Gold/Brown ($660) is an Italian lurex tailoring fabric with a two-tone shimmer and a voluminous shape, plus pockets.

Velour alternatives. If satin feels too slippery, velour gives a similar evening glow. The AM-PM Midi Skirt in Dark Chocolate ($340) is a fluid velour with a pull-on waist, and the Evening Mini Skirt in Black ($390) is sequin-embroidered velour in an A-line mini. See all the label’s skirts in our ME+EM skirts guide.

How to style a satin skirt by day

With a chunky jumper. The contrast between soft knit and shiny satin is the point. Tuck the front of a relaxed jumper into the waistband and leave the back loose. A brushed cashmere V-neck is ideal; see our guide to cashmere sweaters for women.

With a shirt. A crisp poplin shirt tucked into a satin skirt, sleeves rolled, with loafers.

With a knitted vest. A slim vest over a long-sleeve top keeps the line neat at the waist. Our knitted vest guide shows how.

With a long coat. A wool coat at mid-calf and a full-length satin skirt below it is one of the best winter silhouettes. Read our guide to wool coats for women.

How to style a satin skirt at night

Pair it with a matching satin top for a column of colour, with a lace cami and a tux blazer, and with a sheer blouse. Our guides to evening tops and cocktail attire cover the full outfits.

Shoes for a satin skirt

A pointed flat, a slingback and a knee boot all work with a midi. A full-length satin skirt needs a shoe that shows at the hem: a heeled sandal, a pump and a Mary Jane flat. Avoid chunky trainers with bias-cut satin; they fight the drape.

How to care for a satin skirt

Follow the care label: most satin-backed crepe is a cool hand-wash and dry clean. Hang it to dry, never wring it. Steam out creases rather than ironing; if you must iron, use a low heat on the matte reverse. Store hanging on a clip hanger with a little space so the satin does not crush.

Frequently asked questions

How do you wear a satin skirt in winter?

Layer it with knitwear and boots. A chunky jumper, a cashmere vest and a long wool coat all balance the sheen and add warmth. Opaque tights work with a midi length.

Are satin skirts in style in 2026?

Yes. For Autumn Winter 2026 satin skirts appear in bias-cut, pleated and lace-trimmed versions, often worn with knitwear by day rather than kept for evenings.

What top goes with a satin skirt?

A fine knit, a crisp shirt, a lace cami and a matching satin top. Contrasting textures look more modern than satin on satin, unless you want a two-piece look.

Does a satin skirt show every lump?

A thin satin can cling. Satin-backed crepe and bias cuts drape away from the body and are more forgiving. Seamless underwear helps.

What is satin-backed crepe?

A fabric with a satin face and a matte crepe reverse. It drapes softly, and creases less than a pure satin.

Can I wear a satin skirt to the office?

Yes, a midi in a dark shade with a knit and flat shoes is office-appropriate. Keep the top matte and the accessories simple.
