Suede Bags: How to Choose, Wear and Care for Suede
A suede bag is made from the underside of a leather hide, buffed into a soft nap, which gives it a matte, velvety look that smooth leather cannot match. It needs a little more care, mainly around rain and oily marks, but a protected, regularly brushed suede bag wears well for years. St. Agni has one of the deeper suede ranges in our designer shoulder bags edit, from the rounded Suede Large Bon Bon to a woven suede hobo, and our St. Agni bags guide covers the full line-up.
Key Facts
- Suede is the flesh side of a hide, sanded into a nap; nubuck is the outer grain side, buffed.
- Search interest in suede bags peaks in October, at the start of the northern autumn.
- Coveti stocks 16 St. Agni suede bags in 9 styles, all made in India.
- St. Agni uses bovine, calfskin and goatskin suede, depending on the style.
- The main suede care steps: protector spray before first use, a soft brush, and air drying away from heat.
What Makes Suede Different
Leather has two faces. The outer, grain side is what you see on a smooth leather bag. Suede comes from the inner, flesh side, which is sanded until the fibres stand up into a short, soft nap. Because the nap is open, suede is more absorbent than smooth leather. That is the source of its softness and also the reason it marks more easily.
The animal changes the feel. Calfskin suede tends to be fine and close. Goatskin suede is light and supple, while bovine suede is usually a little sturdier. St. Agni uses all three: the Suede Soft Bag is calfskin suede, the Suede Large Bon Bon is bovine suede and the Linea Stitch Bateau Tote has a goatskin suede body.
| Material | Which side of the hide | Feel | Care level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth leather | Outer grain | Firm, slight sheen | Low |
| Nubuck | Outer grain, buffed | Fine, velvety | Medium |
| Suede | Inner flesh side, sanded | Soft nap, matte | Medium |
How to Choose a Suede Bag
Pick a shape that suits the softness
Suede drapes, so it suits relaxed shapes. Slouchy shoulder bags, rounded pouches and soft totes all look natural in it. Very structured shapes can work too, and they often add contrast details to sharpen the line, as St. Agni does with the contrast leather stitching on the suede body of the Linea Stitch Bateau Tote.
Choose the colour for how you live
Mid browns are the most forgiving. Coffee, toffee and chocolate hide dust and light marks, and they work with denim, black and ivory alike. Pale suede looks fresh in summer but shows wear sooner. Black suede is the most formal and also shows dust, so a brush is useful.
Check the closure
Many suede bags are slouchy and open at the top. If you want a bag that zips shut, check the details: St. Agni’s Bon Bon and Suede Woven Hobo zip, while the Suede Soft Bag and Soft Oval Shoulder Bag use a magnetic press snap.

How to Care for a Suede Bag
Before you carry it
Apply a suede protector spray before the first wear, in a light, even mist, and let it dry fully. Care guides differ on how often to reapply, so reapply whenever the bag has been cleaned and after it has been wet.
Everyday care
Brush the bag with a soft suede brush to lift dust and keep the nap even, working in one direction. A suede eraser handles small scuffs and shiny spots. Avoid household cleaning products, which can damage suede.
Rain, spills and grease
Blot liquids straight away with a clean, dry cloth; rubbing spreads the mark. If the bag gets rained on, blot it, stuff it with tissue to hold the shape and let it air dry away from heaters and hairdryers, then brush the nap back up. For an oily mark, cover it with cornflour, leave it for a few hours and brush it off. Take large stains to a specialist cleaner.
Storage
Keep suede in a breathable dust bag, never plastic, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Stuffing with tissue keeps soft shapes from collapsing.
Wearing Suede in Summer
Suede has a reputation as an autumn fabric, and in the northern hemisphere it is: search interest peaks in October. As summer starts in Australia, the answer is colour. Pale suede, such as the Papyrus Suede Soft Bag, looks right with linen and white cotton, and a woven suede bag feels lighter still. Keep suede out of the beach bag rotation; sand and salt water are hard on the nap. For more brown suede pieces, our who wears St. Agni guide covers the khaki suede bomber and column skirt that made headlines in April 2026, and our Polene tote bags post covers another soft-leather bag range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are suede bags hard to maintain?
Suede bags need more care than smooth leather, but the routine is simple. Spray with a suede protector before first use, brush regularly with a soft suede brush and keep the bag away from heavy rain. Most marks lift with a suede eraser.
What happens if a suede bag gets wet?
Blot it gently with a clean cloth, stuff it with tissue to hold its shape and let it air dry naturally. Keep it away from hairdryers, heaters and other direct heat, which can stiffen suede. Once dry, brush the nap back up.
Can you wear a suede bag in summer?
Yes. Pale and mid-tone suede, such as papyrus and toffee, work well with linen and cotton in warm weather. Keep it away from sand and salt water, which are hard on the nap.
What is the difference between suede and nubuck?
Suede is made from the inner, flesh side of a hide, sanded into a soft nap. Nubuck is made from the outer grain side, buffed to a fine velvety finish. Both need similar care.
Which St. Agni suede bag zips closed?
The Suede Large Bon Bon Bag, the Grande Bon Bon Bag in suede and the Suede Woven Hobo Bag all have zip closures. The Suede Soft Bag and Soft Oval Shoulder Bag close with a magnetic press snap.
