What to Wear in St. Anton and Kitzbuhel: Austrian Ski and Apres Style

What to wear in St. Anton and Kitzbuhel follows Austria’s ski rhythm: hard-working skiwear for big Arlberg days, then ski boots, a ski sweater and an open jacket for loud apres on the mountain, and a long down coat for Kitzbuhel’s medieval streets and the Hahnenkamm race week. There is no official dress code in either resort. For winter 2026/27, Perfect Moment has the knitwear and flares Austrian apres is built on, shown in our women’s knitwear edit, and if you are new to the ritual, start with what apres-ski actually means.

Key Facts

  • Ski Arlberg links St. Anton, Lech, Zurs and neighbouring villages into Austria’s largest connected ski area, with about 300 km of pistes and 85 lifts according to Tyrol tourism.
  • Hannes Schneider’s ski school in St. Anton, commonly dated to 1921, helped make the Arlberg known as the cradle of alpine skiing.
  • MooserWirt, on the piste above St. Anton, was founded in 1989, according to its official site, and runs apres daily from 3pm.
  • Kitzbuhel’s Hahnenkamm races have been held since 1931, and the 87th edition is scheduled for 18 to 24 January 2027.
  • Perfect Moment opened a seasonal store in Kitzbuhel in late 2024.

Austrian Apres-Ski Culture in a Paragraph

Austria does apres differently from Switzerland and France. It starts early, in the afternoon, often in a hut on the last run home, and it is loud: live DJs, schlager songs and dancing in ski boots. Then everyone skis the final stretch down to the village. That means your apres outfit is also your ski outfit. You will not change before the bar, so the knit under your jacket has to look good, and your pants have to cope with a warm room and a cold descent.

Our apres-ski outfit guide has ten general formulas. This page is about the Austrian version.

What to Wear in St. Anton am Arlberg

On the slopes

St. Anton is a serious ski resort with a lot of steep and off-piste terrain, and it is the eastern side of the Ski Arlberg network. Days are long and you cover distance, so pick skiwear that moves. The 80s Slalom Bib Ski Pant in Black is 10K waterproof with 4-way stretch and a fleece lining, and the bib keeps snow out on deep days. Over it, the Metallic Polar Flare Down Jacket in Wine adds a snow skirt, a helmet-compatible hood and RECCO, which is worth having anywhere you leave the marked runs.

Apres at MooserWirt

MooserWirt sits directly on the piste above the village and is one of the best-known apres bars in the Alps. Its official site dates it to 1989, when a farming family turned their stable into a hut by the piste. Food is served from late morning and apres starts at 3pm with DJs. Opening times change, so check before you go.

The outfit is simple. Keep the bib on, unzip the jacket and tie it round your waist when it gets hot, and let a ski sweater do the talking. The Apres Schild Merino Wool Sweater in Red carries “Apres” intarsia at the front and runs true to size, per the brand. A cap you can keep on all afternoon helps, and so does a light base layer, because the room gets warm.

A note on the other famous name: the Krazy Kanguruh, a St. Anton apres bar dating from 1965, was demolished in 2025, according to Skiing Austria. Check its status before planning around it.

In the village

After the ski-down, St. Anton’s pedestrian centre is busy and relaxed. Change into knit pants and boots. The Chalet Merino Wool Knitted Pant in Black with a cropped faux fur jacket covers dinner. For a quieter, more polished evening, the Arlberg’s other side is Lech, which we cover in the world’s luxury ski resorts and what to wear in each.

What to Wear in Kitzbuhel

Kitzbuhel is different again. It is a medieval town at about 760 metres, with a painted old centre, and its ski area, KitzSki, spreads across several peaks. It is a place where people walk, shop and eat in town as much as they ski. Perfect Moment chose it for its seasonal Alpine store, opened in late 2024.

On the slopes

The Hahnenkamm lift starts close to the town centre. Kitzbuhel’s lower altitude means variable snow and milder days, so a flexible set-up works best: a light down jacket over a base layer, alternatively a shell plus a gilet. The Merino Wool and Cashmere Down Gilet in Black pairs a 90% merino, 10% cashmere knit with 700-fill-power duck down, and it moves easily from ski jacket to town coat.

Hahnenkamm race week

The Hahnenkamm races are held on the Streif, one of the most famous downhill courses in ski racing, and have run since 1931. The 2027 week is scheduled for 18 to 24 January, with super-G on the Friday, downhill on the Saturday and slalom on the Sunday, according to Kitzbuhel Tourism. The week is about crowds and standing outside for hours. There is no dress code, but the cold is real.

  • A long, warm parka over a down gilet. The Supernova Down Parka Jacket in Snow Leopard has 700-fill-power down and a print that suits the week’s party mood.
  • A full base layer, including leggings under your trousers.
  • Insulated boots with a rubber sole for trampled, icy snow.
  • A hat, gloves and sunglasses.

Kitzbuhel evenings

Town evenings in Kitzbuhel lean smarter than in St. Anton. A fine knit, tailored trousers and faux fur make an easy formula. The Faux Fur Hoodie in Brown is cropped and oversized, with a houndstooth quilted lining and the star logo stitched across the back. Wear it over the Star Dust Merino Wool Sweater in Black. For a Bavarian-born alternative, Bogner’s Kela Faux Fur Ski Jacket in Black is both a ski jacket and a town piece.

  • A knitted pant for evenings, alternatively the Perfect Moment Logo Leggings in Black under a long sweater.
  • A cropped faux fur jacket.
