From Budapest to Madison Avenue
The story starts in Budapest. Judit Peto was sent to King’s College London in 1938 to study chemistry, came home when war broke out and took an apprenticeship with a Budapest handbag maker. Wikipedia records her as the first woman to join the Hungarian handbag guild. She survived the 1944 occupation with her family, made her first bags of her own in 1945 and sold them to American Army staff, which is how she met Sergeant Gerson Leiber. They married in 1946 and moved to New York.
In New York she worked as a pattern maker for Nettie Rosenstein. The house timeline credits her with the bag Mamie Eisenhower carried to the 1953 inaugural ball, the first of many made for First Ladies. In 1963 Judith and Gus opened their own company, Judith Leiber Handbags.
The minaudiere that made the name
A minaudiere is a small, hard cased evening bag, and Leiber made it her own by covering metal frames in crystal, one stone at a time. The shapes are the fun part: peonies, teddy bears, cupcakes, cocktails and, this season, a red lobster and a whole family of novelty pill capsules. The classic shapes, such as the Slim Slide, are just as collected.
Nancy Reagan carried a Leiber to the second Reagan inauguration in 1985, and the brand kept designing for inaugural celebrations for decades. In 1994 the Council of Fashion Designers of America gave Leiber its Lifetime Achievement Award.
After Judith
She retired in 1998 after designing her last bag, The Peacock, and sold the company. With Gus she opened The Leiber Collection in East Hampton, a museum for her bags and his paintings. Her designs sit in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Cupcake bag became a pop culture moment on Sex and the City in 2006, and since 2011 the creative direction has been led by Jana Matheson, with a focus on red carpet pieces and new collectors.

Our view
I think of a Leiber as jewellery you carry. Keep the dress simple, let the bag do the work, and look after it the way you would a good watch. If you want to compare, our Brands like Judith Leiber page sets it against Jimmy Choo and Oscar de la Renta.
