Black Loafers for Women: The Best Leather, Fringe and Heeled Styles
Black loafers for women are slip-on leather shoes without laces, and they are the most useful flat in a wardrobe: they go with trousers, skirts and denim, and they last. Our designer loafers edit has three new Khaite styles for Resort 2027, led by the hand-pleated Irene loafer in pebbled calfskin.
Here is how to choose the shape, the loafers we rate, and how they compare on each house’s own details.
How to choose black loafers
The leather. Pebbled calfskin is soft and forgiving; patent is polished and formal; suede is relaxed.
The detail. A plain vamp is the most versatile. A fringe, as on a kiltie, adds a little movement. A horsebit adds hardware.
The heel. Flat for every day, a low block for the office, a 5 cm heel to wear with trousers in the evening.

How to wear black loafers
With straight trousers, let the hem just touch the top of the loafer. With a skirt, bare ankles in summer and fine black tights in winter. With jeans, roll the hem once so the shoe shows. A black leather skirt such as the Khaite Cindy and a heeled loafer is a quick evening outfit.
Sizing
Loafers have no laces to adjust, so fit matters more than with any other flat. Khaite sizes footwear in Italian EU sizes. It lists the Anouk as true to size and the two Irene styles as running large, so take half a size down. Coveti lists whole sizes from 35 EU to 42 EU. More detail is in our Khaite loafers guide.

Frequently asked questions
Should loafers be tight at first?
Snug but not painful. Leather loafers relax a little with wear, but a loafer that slips at the heel on day one will only get looser.
Do Khaite loafers run large?
The Irene loafer and Irene pump run large, and Khaite recommends sizing down half a size. The Anouk is true to size.
What socks go with loafers?
Fine black socks with trousers, sheer tights with skirts, no-show socks with bare ankles.
Are heeled loafers comfortable?
A heel of around 5 cm, like the Khaite Anouk and Irene pump, keeps most of the comfort of a flat.
