Does a Dôen Dress Need a Slip? A Guide to Sheer Fabrics and Slips
Some Dôen dresses are sheer. That is part of their charm, and it is why Dôen makes its own slips. This guide explains which fabrics need one, which slip to choose and how to match length and colour. All the pieces are in the Dôen collection at Coveti, and you can see the full range of designer dresses too. For the main dress styles, read our Dôen dress guide.
Which Dôen fabrics are sheer?
- Cotton voile: light and airy, slightly sheer in white and pale shades.
- Silk crinkle chiffon: floaty and see-through, usually lined and sold with a slip.
- Lace and metallic lace: openwork by design. Dôen suggests pairing pieces such as the Edie Dress in Moondust with one of its slips.
- Eyelet: the holes are small, but white eyelet can show what is underneath.
Poplin, ramie, satin and knitwear are generally opaque.
The Dôen slips
Dôen makes slips in several lengths and in skin-toned and dark shades.
- Amedine Slip: a bias-cut, knee-length lace slip with satin piping, designed to layer under Dôen dresses. It comes in Amedine Slip in Black, Amedine Slip in Sand Dollar, Amedine Slip in Conch, Amedine Slip in Carob and Amedine Slip in Umber.
- Deep V-neck slips: sheer viscose with adjustable straps. Dôen designs the V for its lower-cut and button-front dresses. The long version suits maxi dresses, as in Long Deep V-Neck Slip in Sand Dollar and Long Deep V-Neck Slip in Black, and the short one suits minis, as in Short Deep V-Neck Slip in Black.
- Scoop-neck slips: the same viscose, with a scoop neck for higher-necked dresses, as in Long Scoop Neck Slip in Conch and Short Scoop Neck Slip in Black.
- Skirt slips: high-waisted half slips with a scalloped elastic waist, for skirts and dresses, such as the Mini Skirt Slip in Black and the Long Skirt Slip in Sand Dollar.
Which neckline to choose
Match the slip’s neckline to the dress. A deep V slip hides under a V-neck, a wrap and a button-front dress. A scoop slip works under high, square and round necklines. If a dress buttons all the way down, choose a full-length slip so nothing shows between the buttons when you sit.
How to choose a slip colour
Match the slip to your skin, not to the dress, if you want it to disappear. Sand Dollar and Conch are the lightest skin tones, Carob and Umber deeper. Choose black under dark prints and lace, and wear a contrast slip under a sheer dress on purpose.
How to choose a slip length
Choose a slip that ends a few centimetres above the dress hem. Knee-length slips suit midi dresses, long slips suit maxis. Check the Dôen product page for the model’s height and the dress length.

Frequently asked questions
Are Dôen dresses see-through?
Some are, particularly voile, chiffon and lace styles in pale colours. Poplin and satin styles are generally opaque.
Do Dôen dresses come with a slip?
Some styles include a slip, others do not. The product description says when one is included. Dôen also sells slips on their own.
What colour slip should I wear under a white dress?
A slip close to your skin tone is the least visible under white. A white slip can show as a line.
Can I wear a Dôen slip on its own?
They are designed as underlayers. The viscose slips are sheer, so we would not wear them alone. The lace Amedine is the closest to a piece you could show, under an open-knit dress.
