The Best Dôen Dresses: A Guide to the Label’s Signature Styles
The Best Dôen Dresses: A Guide to the Label’s Signature Styles
A Dôen dress is easy to spot: a soft neckline, a little smocking, a print that looks found in a grandmother’s trunk. The Los Angeles label has built its name on these dresses, and they make up the largest part of the Dôen collection at Coveti. This guide walks through the shapes worth knowing, what they are made of and how they fit, so you can choose with confidence. For the full rail, browse our designer dresses, and if you are unsure of size, start with the Dôen sizing guide.
What makes a Dôen dress
Dôen was founded by Santa Barbara-born sisters Margaret and Katherine Kleveland and launched in 2016. The brand describes its collections as inspired by a nostalgia for the coastal California of decades past, and the dresses show it. Necklines are scooped, squared and tied with a ribbon. Sleeves puff. Bodices are smocked and pintucked. Skirts fall long and loose.
The fabrics do a lot of the work. Across the Dôen pieces we carry, organic cotton and silk are the two fibres that appear most, often as a fine cotton voile, a silk crinkle chiffon and a silk satin cut on the bias. Voile is light and slightly sheer, which is why some styles come with a slip (more on that in our guide to whether a Dôen dress needs a slip).
The Ischia Dress, a Favorite Character
Dôen calls its returning best sellers Favorite Characters, and the Ischia Dress is the one most people picture. It first appeared in Spring 2021. It has double puffed sleeves, a scoop neckline edged with small ruffles, a smocked bodice with an adjustable waist tie and an A-line skirt that grazes the ankle. The fabric is a soft blend of organic cotton and viscose.
It comes back each season in new prints. At Coveti you can choose the Ischia Dress in Salt, the Ischia Dress in Black, the polka-dotted Ischia Dress in Noir Dot and the floral Ischia Dress in Vert Petit Bouquet de Chamonix. Because the bodice is smocked, it is one of the more forgiving Dôen shapes to size.
Smocked day dresses
Smocking is the Dôen signature for everyday dresses. It gives a fitted bodice that still stretches, so the dress is comfortable from breakfast to a late dinner. Good examples on Coveti are the Quinelle Dress in Black in organic cotton poplin, the Safia Dress in Deep Ruby with long self ties that wrap at the waist, and the Emmaretta Dress in Blue Garden Bloom. If you love the look, our guide on how to style a smocked dress covers shoes, layers and occasions.
Eyelet and white cotton dresses
White cotton is a Dôen staple. The brand’s shade name for its cleanest white is Salt, and you will see it on most of the label’s eyelet and broderie pieces. The Nessie Dress in Salt is a good place to start, and it also comes in Nessie Dress in Black. For something longer, look at the Hortense Dress in Salt and the Eliette Dress in Salt. Our white eyelet dress guide has more on how to wear them.
Silk slip and bias-cut dresses
Dôen’s silk dresses are cut on the bias so they move with the body. They are the label’s evening and wedding-guest pieces. The Zoelle Dress in Larimar is a 1990s-style slip in silk satin, trimmed with lace at the neckline and hem. The Silvanie Dress in Camille Dot has a cowl neckline and a scarf belt at the hip. For a column of colour, the Zelia Dress in Bougainvillea is cut in silk crinkle chiffon with circular ruffles on a floor-grazing skirt.
Dôen Heirloom: lace and Edwardian detail
The Heirloom pieces are the most detailed in the range. Dôen describes them as nodding to Edwardian lawn dresses, and they are worked in organic cotton voile with inset and applique lace. The Adrienne Dress in Salt is a mini with shirred panels. The Calanthe Dress in Candlelight and the Evangeline Dress in Pearl are longer and more formal. If this is your corner of Dôen, read our guide to Edwardian blouses as well.
How much is a Dôen dress?
At Coveti, Dôen dresses start a little above 400 US dollars for cotton day styles and rise to several thousand for the lace and beaded Heirloom pieces. Silk dresses sit in the middle. The price follows the fabric and the handwork: a smocked poplin dress is far simpler to make than a lace gown with hundreds of hand-set pieces.
How to choose your first Dôen dress
- For everyday wear: choose a smocked cotton style such as the Ischia and the Quinelle. They wash, travel and forgive a change in size.
- For a wedding: choose a silk bias-cut dress, a print rather than a solid if you are a guest at a summer ceremony.
- For a keepsake: choose a Heirloom piece and plan to keep it for decades.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular Dôen dress?
The Ischia Dress is the best known. Dôen lists it as a Favorite Character that first appeared in Spring 2021, and it returns each season in new prints and colours.
Are Dôen dresses worth the price?
They are made in natural fibres such as organic cotton and silk, with smocking, pintucks and lace that take time to sew. If you wear a dress often and keep it for years, the cost per wear is reasonable. If you want a dress for a single event, a simpler style will serve you better.
Do Dôen dresses run small?
It depends on the cut. Smocked and tie-waist styles have give, while fitted non-stretch styles with a zip are less forgiving. Our Dôen sizing guide explains how to choose.
Are Dôen dresses see-through?
Some are. Voile, chiffon and lace can be sheer, and Dôen sells slips to wear underneath. Each product page lists the fabric so you can check.
Where can I buy authentic Dôen dresses?
Coveti carries authentic Dôen ready-to-wear and ships worldwide. Every piece is checked before it is dispatched.
