How to Style a Smocked Dress, Season by Season

0

A smocked dress is one of the easiest things to wear. The gathered, stretchy panel holds the bodice close without a zip, and the skirt falls loose. Few labels make them as well as Dôen, whose smocked styles are a large part of the Dôen collection at Coveti. Below is how to wear one all year, with picks from our designer dresses. For more Dôen shapes, see our Dôen dress guide.

What is a smocked dress?

Smocking is a technique that gathers fabric into tight rows, traditionally stitched by hand and now often with elastic thread. The result is a panel that stretches. On a dress it usually sits at the bodice, the waist and the cuffs. It gives shape without structure, which is why smocked dresses feel comfortable all day.

How should a smocked dress fit?

The smocked panel should sit flat against you without pulling. If the rows open up and show gaps, it is too small. If it puckers loosely, it is too big. Because smocking stretches, you can often take the smaller size when you are between two. Our Dôen sizing guide explains this in more detail.

In summer

Wear a cotton smocked dress with flat leather sandals and a woven bag. Keep jewellery small: gold hoops, a fine chain. A straw hat finishes it at the beach. The Quilla Dress in Coconut and the Emmaretta Dress in Blue Garden Bloom are the kind of dress we mean.

In spring and autumn

Add a short cardigan buttoned over the bodice, and knotted at the shoulders. Swap sandals for ballet flats and a low boot. A smocked dress with long sleeves, such as a printed poplin style, carries straight through to October. Our Dôen knitwear guide has cardigans that sit at the right length.

In winter

Layer a fine turtleneck under a sleeveless smocked dress, add tights and knee boots, and finish with a long wool coat. Dark colours and plaids work best, such as the Begonia Dress in Valmont Plaid and the Quinelle Dress in Black.

For a wedding

Choose a maxi length in a print, and add a heeled sandal and a small bag. A smocked silk and fine cotton dress is right for a garden and daytime wedding. The Sorina Dress in Petit Posy Calico and the Illiana Dress in Blanc Prairie Rose both suit. Avoid all-white smocked dresses as a guest.

What not to do

  • Do not add a wide belt over the smocking. It fights the gathers.
  • Do not size down so far that the rows pull open.
  • Do not tumble dry unless the label allows. Heat can shrink the elastic.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smocked dress?

A dress with a gathered, stretchy panel, usually at the bodice and waist, made by stitching fabric into tight rows.

Are smocked dresses flattering?

They suit most shapes because the smocking follows the body without squeezing it. A defined waist and a loose skirt balance most figures.

Should a smocked dress be tight?

It should sit flat and close, without the rows pulling open. If you see gaps between the rows, size up.

Can you wear a smocked dress in winter?

Yes. Layer a fine knit underneath, add tights and boots, and choose a darker colour and a plaid.

How do you wash a smocked dress?

Follow the care label. Most cotton smocked dresses can be washed cold and dried flat, which protects the elastic.
