An honest Dries Van Noten review has to start with what the house is for. It is not a tailoring house, not a bag house and not a minimalist one; it is a textile house, and the question is whether the cloth, the print and the embroidery justify the price on the body and after a year of wear. Having read every composition, fit and care bullet the house publishes for the 382 pieces now at Coveti, here is the verdict by family, what is worth it, what to be careful of, and how the sizing runs.

The prints and jacquards: worth it

This is what the house does that nobody else does, and the pieces hold up. The Silk shirt dress is silk satin with a print that reads as a painting from across a room. The Jacquard duffle coat in Sand is a woven Floral Tapestry with a hood and toggles, and jacquard wears better than print because the pattern cannot fade off the surface. The Wrap scarf-skirt is silk cut like a scarf, and it will be worn for a decade. Buy the printed pieces in the cloths that last: silk, viscose twill, jacquard.

The knitwear: the best value in the range

Pure merino at $800 for the Merino sweater in Black, pure cashmere at $1,650 for the Cropped cashmere cardigan in Dark Brown, and the jacquard knits, the Jacquard wool sweater in Light Red, at $830. The gauges are fine, the shapes regular, and the house’s own advice to store them folded is the only care they need.

The tailoring and trousers: easy, not sharp

Dries Van Noten tailoring is soft. The Double breasted moiré blazer in Black is a fluid double-breasted viscose, the Tailored wool pants in Black are virgin wool gabardine with a regular fit, the Wide pleated jeans in Indigo are wide and pleated. If you want a shoulder and a crease, this is not the house. If you want tailoring that moves and sits with a printed piece, it is. The elasticated and drawstring trousers are a strength: the Wide leg jacquard pants in Ocra are as comfortable as sweatpants and look nothing like them.

The shoes: the quiet success

Made in Italy, calf-lined, and sized honestly on EU sizes. The Suede sneakers in Black are suede sneakers with a creased toe that has become the house’s most searched-for piece; the Leather loafers in Tan are squares-toed loafer in two-toned leather; the Velvet wedge pumps in Brique are velvet T-bars on a curved wedge. The bags and jewellery: decorative objects

The bags are surfaces first, gobelin and jacquard and embroidery on simple shapes; the Embroidered East-West bag in Sky is the best of them and the flat Large scarf bag in Brown the most useful. The jewellery is handmade brass, resin, glass and enamel, so expect variation between pieces and treat the Long pendant necklace in Old Brass and the Handmade painted bracelet in Lilac as costume jewellery of a high order rather than fine jewellery.

What to be careful of

Three things. The sizing is generous on the loose and oversized pieces, so read the fit line on the product page before you size down. The neon duchesse pieces are polyester, deliberately, and will not feel like silk. And the embroidered pieces, at $500 to $10,630, are priced for the handwork; they are wonderful and they are not everyday.

“Knitwear is best stored folded, so its original shape is maintained,” the Care Guide continues, and it asks customers to “consult a green dry cleaner in your area and only use its services when necessary.”
