Is Dries Van Noten a Luxury Brand? The Case, With the Numbers
Yes, Dries Van Noten is a luxury brand, and it is one of the few that earns the word through the clothes rather than the marketing. It does not advertise, it does not license its name, it shows in Paris twice a year, its shoes are made in Italy and its embroidered pieces are worked by hand in India at couture prices. The house is majority-owned by Puig, which also owns Carolina Herrera, Jean Paul Gaultier and Nina Ricci, and it sells through its own flagships in Antwerp, Paris and Los Angeles and a short list of department stores and retailers. At Coveti the ready-to-wear runs $470 to $10,630 and the whole range $340 to $10,630. Here is the case, with the numbers.
Key facts
- Independent house from 1986 to 2018, majority-owned by the Puig group since 2018, founder a minority shareholder
- Shows on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, two womenswear and two menswear collections a year
- No advertising, no logo, no licensed perfume until the house’s own beauty line in 2022
- Shoes made in Italy; embroidered bags made in India; the country of manufacture stated on every accessory product page
- Hand embroidery in gold bullion, sequins, beads and ribbon on coats, blazers, skirts, tops/shirt/" class="cvx-al cvx-al--category">shirts and bags
- Coveti prices on 20 September 2026: knitwear from $800, dresses from $1,370, coats from $2,540, embroidered pieces to $10,630
The materials
The textile is the point of the house, so the cloth list is where the money goes: silk satin and viscose twill for the prints, pure merino, alpaca and cashmere in the knitwear, virgin wool gabardine and wool crepe in the tailoring, cotton viscose velvet, moiré viscose, lurex pinstripe and stone-washed hand-sanded denim. Where a polyester appears it is a technical one, the duchesse of the neon rain coats and the chiffon of the pleated dresses. The Cropped cashmere cardigan in Dark Brown is pure cashmere at $1,650; the Tailored wool pants in Black are virgin wool gabardine at $1,240.
The making
Every pair of shoes states Made in Italy: the Leather loafers in Tan, the Suede sneakers in Black, the boots and the wedge pumps. The embroidered bags and the gobelin East-West bags state Made in India, where the house has worked with the same embroidery ateliers for decades. The Embroidered ankle-length wool coat in Black at $6,550 and the embroidered jackets at up to $10,630 are priced like couture because they are made like it. The ready-to-wear product pages do not name a factory country, and Coveti does not claim one.
The price
Luxury pricing is a band, and Dries Van Noten sits in the same band as The Row, Loewe and Bottega Veneta for ready-to-wear and below them for accessories. A printed silk dress is $1,730 to $3,200, a jacquard coat $4,760, a blazer $2,460 to $6,550, the suede sneaker $730 and the brass jewellery $500 to $1,970. The price guide has every family.
The reputation
The CFDA named Dries Van Noten International Designer of the Year in 2008, France made him an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2015, Belgium made him a Baron in 2017 and WWD named him Designer of the Year for both women’s and men’s in 2023. Michelle Obama wore the house to the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony in 2016; Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore and Maggie Gyllenhaal are among the actresses who wear it. The who-wears page has the sourced list.
What it is not
It is not a logo brand and it is not a bag brand, so it does not appear on resale price charts the way a Hermès does. It is not a couture house; the embroidered pieces are made in numbers and sold ready-to-wear. And it is not cheap: there is no outlet and no house sale calendar, which the sale page explains.
The house’s Biography page lists the CFDA International Designer of the Year award in 2008, the French title of Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2015, and the Belgian king’s elevation of the designer to Baron in 2017.
