How Much Is a Mink Coat? What Really Sets the Price

The price of a mink coat comes down to how many pelts it takes, how long it is, how the fur is finished and who cut it. A short mink jacket uses a fraction of the skins in a 130 cm maxi coat, so length is the single biggest lever. Long-haired, straightened and Blackglama mink sit at the top of the range, while a cloth coat with a mink collar sits far below it. Paris furrier Yves Salomon makes every one of these, so its current mink coats show the whole scale in one place.

Key facts

  • Length drives price more than anything else: more length means more pelts
  • Long-haired mink costs more than short, sheared mink
  • Straightened long-haired mink adds a finishing step and a deeper sheen
  • Black mink sold under the Blackglama label is the premium black grade
  • A mink collar on a wool coat costs a fraction of a full-pelt coat

Why mink coats cost what they do

A mink coat is built from many individual pelts matched for colour, length of hair and density, then cut and sewn into long strips so the fur falls in clean vertical lines. That matching and sewing is skilled handwork, and it scales with the size of the garment. Two coats in the same fur can sit at very different prices simply because one reaches the hip and the other reaches the ankle.

The fur itself varies too. Long-haired mink keeps its full guard hair, which gives a fuller, glossier surface than sheared mink. Some long-haired mink is then straightened, a finishing process that lays the hair flatter and makes the pile look denser. Each of those steps adds cost before a single seam is sewn.

The five things that set a mink coat price

1. Length

Length is the clearest price signal. Yves Salomon lists the length on every fur product page: the Short Long-Haired Mink Cape is cut to 43 cm, the Long-Haired Mink Fur Coat with High Collar to 105 cm and the Straightened Long-Haired Mink Maxi Coat to 130 cm. Each step down the body adds pelts and hours.

2. Long hair and straightening

Long-haired mink costs more than sheared mink because it keeps more of the natural fur. Straightening, which the house uses on coats such as the Short Belted Straightened Long-Haired Mink Fur Coat, is an extra finishing stage that gives a richer, denser look.

3. Colour and grade

Natural dark browns are the most widely available. Deep black mink sold as Blackglama, the American Legend label for its finest black mink, is a premium grade; Yves Salomon codes its black long-haired coats with that name, as on the Long-Haired Mink Long Coat. White and dyed shades such as forest green need very even pelts, which adds to the cost.

4. Construction details

A matching mink belt, a notched tailored collar, hook closures that sit invisibly in the fur and a full silk lining all add work. The Belted Long-Haired Mink Maxi Coat with Notched Collar has all four.

5. The maker

Established fur houses charge for pattern cutting, pelt matching and traceability. Yves Salomon pieces carry a Furmark label number on the product page, which lets a buyer trace the fur in the piece.

Where the price steps sit

Think of mink in four bands, from least to most pelts. A wool coat with a mink collar, such as the Long Cashmere Wool Coat with Mink Fur Collar, uses only a small amount of fur. A short mink jacket like the Short Long-Haired Mink Fur Jacket is the entry point to full-pelt mink. Knee-length coats come next, and ankle-length maxi coats in long-haired, straightened and Blackglama mink sit at the top. Current prices for each piece are on its Coveti product page.

Is a mink coat worth the money?

A well-made mink coat lasts for decades with proper care, so cost per wear falls every winter it is worn. Buy from a maker that states the fur, the length and the lining, and look after it: cool, dark storage in a breathable cover on a broad hanger. Our fur and shearling care guide covers storage and cleaning, and the Yves Salomon mink and fur coats guide explains each fur the house uses.

Five mink coats across the price scale

1. Long Cashmere Wool Coat with Mink Fur Collar

The entry to mink: a check cashmere wool coat with a mink collar that frames the face.

2. Short Long-Haired Mink Fur Jacket

A cropped full-pelt jacket in forest green, the lightest way into long-haired mink.

3. Long-Haired Mink Fur Coat with High Collar

A 105 cm coat with a high straight collar, closed with hooks and lined in silk.

4. Belted Long-Haired Mink Maxi Coat with Notched Collar

A 120 cm tailored coat with a matching mink belt.

5. Long-Haired Mink Long Coat

The top of the scale: 130 cm of black long-haired mink with a tailored collar.

How to check quality before you buy

Run a hand against the grain: good mink springs back at once and feels dense right down to the skin. The guard hairs should be even in length and shine, with no bald patches at the seams. Look inside if you can. A silk lining, neat hand finishing at the hem and fastenings set into the fur, not stitched on top of it, are all signs of a careful maker. Finally, check that the seller states the fur type, the length in centimetres and the lining fabric; Yves Salomon lists all three on every fur product page.

Mink coat price versus fox and shearling

Mink is usually the most expensive of the common furs because it takes many small pelts to make a garment. Fox pelts are larger and the fur longer, so a fox coat can need fewer skins for the same coverage; see our fox fur coat guide. Shearling, which is lambskin with the wool left on, generally sits below both; the Yves Salomon shearling guide explains the Toscana and Merino skins the house uses.

How long does a mink coat last?

With good care, decades. Keep it out of plastic and away from heat, hang it on a broad shoulder hanger, give it room in the wardrobe and have it professionally cleaned and glazed every few seasons. Many owners also use summer cold storage with a furrier. A coat cared for this way can be relined and restyled later, which is part of why cost per wear falls so sharply over time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mink coat cost?

It depends mostly on length and fur grade. A cloth coat with a mink collar costs a fraction of a full-pelt coat, a short mink jacket is the entry point to full mink, and ankle-length coats in long-haired, straightened and Blackglama mink cost the most. Coveti shows the current price on each product page.

Why are long mink coats so expensive?

A long coat needs many more pelts, and every pelt has to be matched for colour and hair length, then cut and sewn by hand. A 130 cm coat can take several times the skins of a 43 cm cape.

What is Blackglama mink?

Blackglama is the label the American Legend cooperative uses for its finest black mink. Yves Salomon codes its black long-haired coats with the Blackglama name.

Is a mink coat a good investment?

A quality mink coat stored and cleaned properly lasts for decades, so the cost per wear drops each season. Buy from a maker that states the fur, the length and the lining.

Does Yves Salomon label where its fur comes from?

Yes. Yves Salomon fur pieces show a Furmark label number on the product page, a traceability system for natural fur.
