Yves Salomon vs Moncler vs Mackage: Which Luxury Winter Coat to Buy

Yves Salomon, Moncler and Mackage all make luxury winter coats, but they start in different places. Yves Salomon is a Paris fur house that adds fur, shearling and Loro Piana fabrics to its down jackets and parkas. Moncler is the down specialist known for the quilted puffer. Mackage is a Montreal label known for leather-trimmed down coats. Choose by material first, then by price.

Yves Salomon: the fur house that makes down jackets

Yves Salomon is the only one of the three that started as a furrier. The family story begins with Grégory Salomon, who built a fur business and brought the family to France in 1920. His son Boris later became president of the International Fur Federation, and the brand says Maison Yves Salomon was born in 1980. Everything the house makes is built around fur, shearling and leather.

That shows in the down jackets. Where most puffers rely on quilting for interest, Yves Salomon builds its doudounes around a collar, a hood bib and a cuff: fox, mink and curly lambskin, almost always removable. Many shells are Loro Piana fabrics: a wool and silk flannel with a waterproof membrane, and a cashmere with a Storm System membrane. Several styles come with matching mittens, and several are rated to minus 10 degrees Celsius in the brand’s product descriptions.

The other icon is the Army parka, launched in 2005 according to the brand: a waterproof cotton blend shell with a detachable fox hood trim and a removable sheared rabbit lining. Then there are the shearling coats in Toscana and Merino lambskin, and the mink coats. Read our guides to the Army parka, the down jackets and the shearling coats.

Moncler: the down specialist

Moncler was founded in 1952 near Grenoble in France, and the brand is now run from Milan. It is the name most people think of for a luxury puffer: glossy quilted nylon, a felt logo patch on the sleeve, and a wide range from short jackets to long coats. Its strengths are down engineering, a recognisable look and a large store network.

Moncler announced in January 2022 that it would stop using animal fur, and press reports at the time said fall/winter 2023 would be its last collection with fur. If a fur-free label is your priority, that counts in its favour. If you want a real fur hood on a down jacket, it is not the brand to look at.

Mackage: tailored down from Montreal

Mackage was founded in Montreal in 1999 by Eran Elfassy, and Elisa Dahan joined soon after as creative partner. It made its name with leather and down coats cut close to the body, often with leather trims at the collar and pockets. The look is clean and urban, and prices generally sit below Moncler and well below Yves Salomon’s fur pieces.

Mackage does not appear to publish a single fur policy we could confirm, so read the composition on each product before you buy if fur matters to you. For a sleek city coat that handles a Canadian winter, it is a strong choice.

Fur, ethics and fur-free choices

This is the biggest practical difference between the three. Yves Salomon uses real fur, including fox, mink and rabbit, alongside lambskin shearling. The house says it signed the Resource Pact in January 2020, covering reduced fur production, traceability and animal welfare, and it sells a collection of Furmark-certified pieces, a traceability label from the International Fur Federation. Those are the brand’s own claims. It also has a fur-free line, Météo, in wool and lambskin.

Moncler has stated publicly that it no longer uses animal fur. Mackage’s position is less clear from public sources. Within Yves Salomon, the lambskin-trimmed down jackets and the shearling parkas are the options without fox, mink and rabbit. Our article Does Yves Salomon use real fur? goes into the detail.

Which luxury winter coat should you buy?

  • You want fur and you want it to last: Yves Salomon. A down jacket with a removable fox collar gives you two coats in one.
  • You want the classic puffer: Moncler.
  • You want a city coat with leather details and a lower price: Mackage.
  • You want something that looks like tailoring: Yves Salomon’s Loro Piana flannel down jackets.
  • You live somewhere wet: an Yves Salomon Army parka in waterproof cotton, then the technical fabric styles from all three brands.
  • You want no fur at all: Moncler, the Yves Salomon Météo line and shearling pieces.

Alternatives: Khaite and Brunello Cucinelli

If none of the three feels right, two more brands on Coveti are worth a look. Khaite, the New York label, makes sculpted wool coats and shearling pieces with a cleaner, more minimal line than Yves Salomon. Brunello Cucinelli, from Solomeo in Italy, is the choice for cashmere coats and quiet down jackets in soft neutrals. For more names in the same spirit, read brands like Yves Salomon.
