Reversible Fur Jackets: How They Work and Which Side to Wear

A reversible fur jacket is a jacket with two finished faces: typically water-repellent technical fabric on one side and mink fur on the other, so you can wear the fur on the outside for glamour and on the inside for warmth and weather protection. It is two jackets in one, and the most practical way to own fur. Paris house Yves Salomon builds many of its parkas and blousons this way; see the range in our women’s mink jackets and compare the gilet versions in our fur vests for women guide.

Key facts

  • A reversible fur jacket has fur on one face and a finished fabric on the other, and can be worn with either side out.
  • Yves Salomon makes several reversible parkas and jackets with water-repellent technical fabric on one side and mink fur on the other.
  • Worn fabric side out, the fur becomes a lining that keeps the warmth close to the body and the rain off the fur.
  • Reversible shearling uses sheepskin, so one side is suede and the other is the wool.
  • The Yves Salomon Army line of fur-lined parkas launched in 2005.
  • Fur and shearling should not be washed, ironed and tumble dried; a specialist fur cleaner is the safe route.

How does a reversible fur jacket work?

A standard fur jacket has the fur facing out and a silk lining inside. A reversible jacket replaces that lining with a second, wearable face. The two layers are joined at the seams and edges so that neither side shows the construction of the other.

The fastenings are the clue. A reversible jacket needs zips and poppers that work from both sides, and pockets set into the seams so they are reachable whichever way out you wear it. Hoods are lined with the opposite material, so a hood shows fur when the fabric is out and fabric when the fur is out.

Which side should you wear out?

Fabric out, fur in. This is the everyday and bad-weather side. The technical shell handles rain and wind, and the mink sits against you like a lining, which is where it gives the most warmth. You get a glimpse of fur at the hood and cuffs, nothing more. Choose this side for travel, the school run and snow.

Fur out, fabric in. This is the evening and dry-day side. The jacket becomes a fur blouson, with the fabric acting as a smooth lining that slides easily over knitwear. Choose it for dinner, the weekend in town and any day the forecast is dry: fur should be kept out of heavy rain.

If the fur gets damp, shake it gently, hang it on a broad hanger away from radiators and let it dry at room temperature.

Reversible constructions compared

Not every reversible piece is made the same way. The table sets out the three you will meet most often.

Construction Side A Side B Strength Example
Fur and technical fabric Water-repellent shell Long-hair mink, rex rabbit Weatherproof one way, glamorous the other Reversible mink blousons and parkas
Shearling and suede Suede face of the sheepskin Lambskin wool Very warm, one natural material Reversible Toscana and Lacon jackets
Down and fur Quilted technical shell with down Mink fur Down insulation plus fur Long reversible hooded down jacket
Flannel and fur Wool flannel Mink fur Tailored look on one side Reversible flannel and mink gilet

The shearling version is a single material: sheepskin with the wool left on, so the suede and the wool are the two sides of the same skin. That makes it warm and soft, but the suede face is not designed for heavy rain. For more on that material see our Yves Salomon shearling coats guide.

The navy reversible hooded mink blouson

New this week, the Reversible Hooded Mink Fur Blouson in Navy is the clearest example of the type. One side is technical fabric, the other is long-hair mink, finished with a hood. Navy is a softer alternative to black that sits well with denim, grey flannel and camel. Worn fabric out, it reads as a sporty hooded blouson; worn fur out, it becomes a short mink jacket.

The idea traces back to the house’s parkas. The Army line of fur-lined parkas, launched in 2005, made the technical shell with a fur interior a signature, and our Yves Salomon Army parka guide covers that family in detail.

What to check when buying a reversible fur jacket

The fastenings. Zips and poppers should run smoothly from both sides, with no exposed tape on either face.

The pockets. Check that you can reach them with either side out. Seam pockets are the usual solution.

The fit. Fur adds bulk, so try the jacket both ways. It should close comfortably over a knit with the fur inside. Yves Salomon uses French sizing; Coveti shows UK sizes, where FR 36 is UK 8 and FR 40 is UK 12. Take your usual size, and see the Yves Salomon size guide for the full chart.

The fur. Mink should feel dense and spring back when you brush it against the grain. Our guide on how to tell if fur is real explains the checks.

How do you care for a reversible fur jacket?

Treat it as fur first. Do not wash, iron and tumble dry it, and take it to a specialist fur cleaner when it needs attention; remove a detachable hood beforehand. Store it on a broad, padded hanger in a breathable cover, never in plastic. Our guide on how to care for fur and shearling has the full routine.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reversible fur jacket?

It is a jacket with two wearable sides, usually fur on one and a fabric such as water-repellent technical fabric on the other. You turn it inside out to change the look.

Is a reversible fur jacket warmer with the fur inside?

Fur inside keeps the warmth close to the body and protects the fur from wind and rain, so it is the better side for cold, wet days.

Can you wear a reversible fur jacket in the rain?

Wear the technical fabric side out in rain. Fur should be kept out of heavy rain and dried slowly at room temperature if it gets damp.

How do you clean a reversible mink jacket?

Do not machine wash it. Remove any detachable hood and take the jacket to a specialist fur cleaner, who can treat both sides.

Are reversible fur jackets bulky?

Slightly more than a single-faced jacket, because there is no thin lining. Try it with a knit underneath and the fur inside to check the fit before buying.
