Mlouye Review: Is Mlouye Worth It? Quality, Leather and What to Buy
Is Mlouye worth it? The short answer is yes, if you want a bag with a real design idea behind it rather than a logo. Mlouye bags are made in the label’s own Istanbul workshop from full-grain Italian leather, they are built with more panels and joints than most bags at the price, and they look like nothing else on the shelf. They also have trade-offs, and this review covers both, with the bags we would buy first. Coveti carries 180 Mlouye bags from $390 to $1,550.
Key facts
- Price: $390 to $1,550 for bags at Coveti; small leather goods from $330.
- Made in: Mlouye makes its bags in its own production facility in Istanbul, Turkey, from full-grain leather sourced from Leather Working Group Gold rated tanneries in Italy.
- Linings: calf suede, microsuede and calf leather; hardware is plated stainless steel.
- Strengths: original shapes, careful panel construction, in-house production, a wide colour range.
- Watch-outs: pale and suede finishes need care; the most architectural shapes hold less than a plain tote of the same size.
- Best first buys: the Sera Tote, the Mini Sera Tote and the Flex Bag.
The leather
Mlouye says it uses full-grain leather from Leather Working Group Gold rated tanneries in Italy, and the product pages bear that out: smooth Italian calf is the default, with grained calf on the work totes, patent and crinkled finishes on some evening styles and calf suede on the softer bags. Full-grain is the outer layer of the hide, the best wearing part, and it softens and darkens slightly with use rather than cracking.
The construction
This is where the label earns its prices. A Sera Tote is built from dozens of stitched panels stepped in and out to make its 3D front, and the folded Flex holds its triangle through the panels alone. That kind of construction is slow, and Mlouye does it in its own facility rather than a contract factory. Linings are suede and leather, not fabric, and the edges are painted and finished.
The drawbacks
The shapes that make Mlouye interesting also limit it. The Sera Tote is only 4.5 cm deep at the base before the drawstring top opens out, so it carries less than its size suggests; the faceted Naomi and Atlas are compact by design. Pale leathers such as Milky and Vanilla show marks, and suede needs a brush and protection from rain. If you want one bag to carry everything, the Isla Tote and the M Tote make more sense than the sculptural pieces.
Value against the competition
At $1,150 the Sera Tote sits in the same bracket as Polène and well below the geometric bags of the large Spanish and Italian houses. For the price you get in-house production and a design you will not see on every street. Mlouye against Polène compares the two labels directly.
How Mlouye holds its value
Mlouye is an independent label, so resale prices are lower than for the big houses; buy it to use, not as an investment. The most recognisable designs, the Sera Tote and the Flex, are the ones that stay wanted.
The Mlouye bags worth buying
1. Sera Tote in Burano, $1,150
The Sera Tote is the house’s signature: a symmetric body with a maze-like 3D facade. Open the handles and a suede drawstring top folds out to take more, and a detachable shoulder strap comes with it. Dimensions: width 30 cm, height 19 cm, depth 4.5 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
2. Mini Sera Tote in Cranberry, $900
The Mini Sera Tote carries the house’s maze-like 3D facade at a small size. Open the handles and a suede drawstring top folds out like an accordion; it fits a large phone, a cardholder and a lipstick, with a detachable shoulder strap. Dimensions: width 19.5 cm, height 12.5 cm, depth 4 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
3. Flex Bag in Denim, $1,010
The Flex Bag is the house’s origami-inspired shoulder bag. Unclip the strap and it becomes a wrist bag and a clutch; inside there is room for a large phone, a small wallet and a 300 ml water bottle, under a suede two-way zip top. Dimensions: height 21 cm, width 28 cm, depth 5 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
4. Naomi Bag in Burano, $1,130
Naomi is built from twisted polygon panels that recall a geometry lesson. It carries by the top handle and on the shoulder, and holds more than its sharp shape suggests. Dimensions: height 16 cm, width 23.5 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
5. Isla Tote in Off White, $1,100
The Isla Tote is a work bag that closes with the house pleated turn-lock. It takes a 16 inch laptop in two main compartments, with a zip section for valuables and a handle drop that suits the shoulder and the hand. Dimensions: width 41 cm, height 28 cm, depth 14 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
6. 12 Bag in Hunter Green, $980
Model 12 takes its shape from the traditional doctor bag. A firm top handle, a detachable strap and leather bands around the body keep the line calm and structured. Dimensions: width 26 cm, height 20 cm, depth 10 cm. Italian calf leather. Made in Istanbul.
