Who Is Mlouye? The Istanbul Bag Label Built by an Industrial Designer

Mlouye is an independent accessories label from Istanbul, founded in 2017 by the industrial designer Meb Seyman. It is best known for bags that look built rather than sewn: the Sera Tote with its stepped, maze-like front, the triangular Flex Bag that folds like paper, and the polygon Naomi. Every Mlouye bag is made in the house’s own Istanbul workshop from Italian leather. Coveti now carries 204 Mlouye pieces, 180 of them bags, from $240 to $1,550. This is the short history of the label, what makes the bags different and where to start.

Key facts

  • Founded: 2017, in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Founder: Meb Seyman, an industrial designer who studied at Middle East Technical University and designed furniture before bags. Earlier press, including Coveteur in 2019, used the surname Rure.
  • Design idea: the Bauhaus. Familiar shapes taken apart and rebuilt with new proportions, folded panels and geometry.
  • Where it is made: Mlouye makes its bags in its own production facility in Istanbul, Turkey, from full-grain leather sourced from Leather Working Group Gold rated tanneries in Italy.
  • Signature bags: the Sera Tote, the Flex Bag, the Naomi, the Helix and Model 12.
  • Collaboration: a capsule with the British label Whistles in September 2019.
  • At Coveti: 204 new pieces on 13 October 2026: 180 bags across 36 families, plus belts, charms and cardholders.

The designer behind the name

Meb Seyman trained as an industrial designer at Middle East Technical University in Ankara and worked on furniture first. In interviews from the label’s early years she explained that she wanted to design objects people carry every day rather than pieces that stay in a room, and the move to bags began while she was working on a laptop bag. That background is visible in everything the house makes: a Mlouye bag is drawn as an object first, with the proportion, the joints and the way it stands on a table all worked out, and only then dressed in colour.

The Bauhaus starting point

The label describes its approach as an instinct to reconsider the familiar: recognisable forms taken apart and rebuilt through unexpected proportions and shifting geometry. The Bauhaus is the stated reference, and it shows in the flat planes, the primary colour blocking of pieces such as the Naomi in Mondrian and the absence of decoration for its own sake. The Mini Pandora takes its curves from the architect Oscar Niemeyer, and the Business Bag has an Art Deco line, but the method is the same: geometry first.

Where Mlouye bags are made

Mlouye makes its bags in its own production facility in Istanbul, Turkey, from full-grain leather sourced from Leather Working Group Gold rated tanneries in Italy, according to the house’s own FAQ. That makes Mlouye unusual in its price bracket: it does not outsource to a contract factory, so the panels that give the bags their shape are cut and assembled under the same roof. Most styles are lined in calf suede, microsuede and calf leather, and the hardware is gold-plated and palladium-plated stainless steel.

The bags to know

The Sera Tote is the signature, a symmetrical top handle with a stepped 3D front and a suede drawstring top that folds out like an accordion. The Flex Bag is an origami triangle that converts from a shoulder bag to a wrist bag. The Naomi twists polygon panels into a compact shoulder bag. Model 12 reworks the doctor bag, and the Seashell Tote is built from hand-stitched panels that open like a shell. the Mlouye bags guide goes through every family.

How Mlouye compares

Mlouye is most often compared with Polène, the Paris label that also sells sculpted leather at a similar price. The difference is the point of view: Polène is soft and curved, Mlouye is folded and faceted. Next to Loewe’s Puzzle, which shares the geometric idea, Mlouye is smaller in scale and well below the price. origami and geometric bags puts the shapes side by side.
