Mlouye vs Polène: Which Sculptural Leather Bag Should You Buy?
Mlouye and Polène come up together because they answer the same wish: a sculpted leather bag with no logo, priced below the big houses. They are not the same bag. Polène, from Paris, is soft and curved; Mlouye, from Istanbul, is folded, faceted and built from panels. Coveti stocks both: Polène and its alternatives have their own guide, and this one puts the two side by side.
Key facts
- Mlouye: founded 2017 in Istanbul by the industrial designer Meb Seyman; made in the house’s own Istanbul facility; Italian full-grain leather.
- Polène: founded 2016 in Paris by the siblings Antoine, Mathieu and Elsa Mothay; made in Ubrique, Spain, a town with a long leather-working tradition.
- Mlouye prices at Coveti: $390 to $1,550 for bags.
- Design: Mlouye folds and steps flat panels into geometry; Polène moulds leather into smooth, rounded volumes.
- Ownership: Mlouye is independent; Polène took investment from L Catterton in 2024.
Two design ideas
The clearest difference is where the shape comes from. Mlouye’s founder trained as an industrial designer, and her bags are constructed: a Sera Tote steps its panels out in relief, a Flex folds three planes into a triangle, a Naomi twists polygons. Polène works the other way, moulding leather into soft curves and rounded handles. If you like edges and geometry, Mlouye; if you like a smooth, rounded bag, Polène.
Where they are made
Mlouye makes every bag in its own production facility in Istanbul, using full-grain leather from Leather Working Group Gold rated Italian tanneries. Polène makes its bags in Ubrique, in Andalusia, a town of leather workshops that also produces for the big houses. Both are serious about their leather; the difference is that Mlouye keeps production in-house.
Price
The two sit close together. A Mlouye Sera Tote is $1,150 at Coveti and a Mini Sera Tote $900; Polène’s core bags fall in a similar range. Mlouye small leather goods start at $330 for the Rotate Cardholder and its charms at $390.
The bags to compare
If you are deciding between Polène’s rounded top handles and a Mlouye, compare the Sera Mia (a compact top handle with an adjustable strap) and the 12 Mini (a structured doctor-bag shape). For a shoulder bag, the Naomi and the Seal Flap. For a big everyday tote, the M Tote, which is reversible.
Which should you buy?
Buy Polène for a quiet, rounded bag that disappears into any outfit. Buy Mlouye for a bag that people ask about, with a design idea you can explain. Many customers own one of each. Browse all designer bags and the Mlouye collection.
