Patou Jewellery: The Coin, the Bocca and Bali

Patou jewellery is small, specific and made by hand a long way from Paris. It is built on
two motifs and one material, and knowing them is most of what you need.

The two motifs

The antique coin. A hammered disc engraved with the Patou logo and the
JP monogram, made as studs, clip earrings, a pendant and a choker.
It is the anchor of the line and the piece most people recognise.

The Bocca. An oval pendant with cut-outs drawn from the
Bocca della Verità, the Roman mouth of truth. The same ornament finishes the
raffia bucket bags, which is a nice piece of internal logic:
the charm on your bag and the pendant at your neck are the same object at different scales.

The material

Brass, gold-plated and silver-plated, sometimes on a cotton cord. Not fine jewellery, and
not priced as such: roughly 170 to 790 euros at source. The advantage of plated brass is that
it takes a suitcase better than gold and you will not mind wearing it daily.

Where it is made

By hand, in the house’s partner atelier in Bali, Indonesia. Patou keeps
most production in Europe and names jewellery as one of the few specialisms it sources
elsewhere. Because every piece is handworked, small differences between two of the same style
are normal and the house says so explicitly.

The range

• Earrings. Coin studs, coin clip-ons for unpierced ears, hammered
  spheres, disc clips, heart studs and half-hoops. French-lock and push-back fastenings on
  the pierced styles.
• Necklaces and chokers. Coin pendants on a thin chain with a T-bar
  closure, the Bocca charm on a double chain, hammered sphere chokers, and heart pendants
  on a double cotton cord with plated tips.
• Bracelets. Coin and hammered sphere bracelets, and the heart ribbon
  bracelet on cord.

Care, which actually matters here

Plated brass is the one material that punishes carelessness. Put jewellery on last, after
perfume and cream. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth after wearing. Keep it away from water and
chemicals and store it dry. Done that way the plating lasts; ignored, it will oxidise.

How to wear it

One piece. The coins are sculptural enough to carry a plain neckline on their own, and the
house styles them that way. Against a black dress at night, a white shirt by day, a single
pair of coin studs is the whole idea.
