how much you want to be looked at.

Where Patou wins
Tailoring and longevity. The Patou jacket is the better buy: RWS virgin
wool twill, viscose lining, a shoulder that does not date. It is a piece you wear for a decade.
Jacquemus tailoring is good but more styled, and it reads of its season.
A permanent range. Les Essentiels carries over year to year, so you can
replace a trouser and a t-shirt you wore out. Jacquemus works in collections that come and go.
Heritage that is real. Patou was an operating couture house from 1914 to
1987 with Lagerfeld, Gaultier and Lacroix through its studio.
That history is genuine, not licensed.
Where Jacquemus wins
Recognition. A Jacquemus bag is legible across a room. Patou is not, by
design. If you want the piece to do social work, Jacquemus does it better.
Resale. Bigger audience, stronger secondary market, easier to move on.
A designer at the helm. Simon Porte Jacquemus still runs his house. Patou
is between artistic directors, which means consistency now but uncertainty later.
Which should you buy?
Buy Patou if you are building a wardrobe: the tailoring, the knitwear and
the blouses are the strongest things either house makes for everyday wear, and the prices are
reasonable for the cloth.
Buy Jacquemus if you are buying a piece rather than a wardrobe, and you
want it to be the thing people comment on.
They also sit together well. A Patou jacket over a Jacquemus dress is a more interesting
outfit than two of either.
