Aje Shoes: The Complete Guide to Every Style

0

Aje shoes are the footwear line of Aje, the Sydney label founded in 2008 by Adrian Norris and Edwina Forest, and Coveti now carries 61 pairs of them for the first time. The range is led by heels and mules (34 pairs), followed by 16 slides, 5 ballet flats, 4 sandals, one trainer and one boot. Almost every style comes in EU sizes 35 to 41, 54 of the 61 pairs are leather, and the heel heights Aje lists run from 4.5 cm to 9 cm.

This guide is the map of the whole range: what each shape is, which families to know, how the sizing works and how to choose between them. For the detail on a single category, follow the links to our dedicated guides on Aje heels, Aje sandals and slides and the Aje shoe size guide.

Aje shoes at a glance

  • Brand: Aje, Sydney, founded 2008 by Adrian Norris (CEO) and Edwina Forest (creative director).
  • Pairs on Coveti: 61 (34 heels and mules, 16 slides, 5 ballet flats, 4 sandals, 1 trainer, 1 boot).
  • Leather: 54 of 61 pairs. The exceptions use PU, cotton denim, recycled nylon and nylon mesh uppers.
  • Sizes: EU 35 to 41 on almost every style; the Anais Slide runs to EU 42.
  • Heel heights listed by Aje: 4.5 cm (Finn Slouchy Boot), 6.5 cm (Saint Heel Mule), 7 cm (Clemence, Alessia, Aestra) and 9 cm (Aventura, Alina Wedge Mule, Zanthe mule).
  • Sourcing: Aje uses leather from Leather Working Group accredited sources and bans exotic skins, so the croc and python looks are leather finishes.
  • Signature details: gathered and ruched uppers, sculptural and droplet heels, organic gold hardware, padded leather insoles.

What kinds of shoes does Aje make?

Aje’s footwear follows the same logic as its clothes: a sculptural line, soft volume and hardware that looks hand-formed rather than machined. In practice that means six groups, and the split is lopsided. More than half the range is heeled, and slides are the second pillar.

Category Pairs on Coveti Key families Heel heights listed
Heels and mules 34 Clemence, Aventura, Liora, Eternal, Saint, Aestra, Carmena, Mirage 6.5 cm, 7 cm, 9 cm
Slides 16 Anais, Solana, Clemence, Cezanne, Alina, Zanthe, Macy, Clara Flat and stacked
Ballet flats 5 Navina, Carmena, Macy Flat
Sandals 4 Spencer, Renata Chunky flat
Trainer 1 Valli Flat
Boot 1 Finn Slouchy Boot 4.5 cm

The colour story is narrow on purpose. Black and Ivory carry most families, with Chocolate, Chestnut, Beach Beige and Tan as the warm neutrals, then metallic Gold and Champagne Gold for evening. Prints and textures arrive through Amber Croc, Black Croc and Python finishes on leather.

What are Aje heels like?

The 34 heeled pairs cover 18 styles, and they divide into four ideas: gathered, sculptural, strappy and mule. You can shop them all in designer heels.

Gathered heels

The Clemence Gathered Heel is the family with the widest colour run on Coveti: Black, Ivory, Chocolate, Chestnut and Beach Beige. It is 100% leather with a gathered upper, a hardware detail and a padded leather insole, and Aje lists the heel at 7 cm. The Clara Heel works the same gathered idea with organic square hardware, in Black and Ivory. The Alessia Heel is a gathered leather thong heel with a square toe and a leather sole, also at 7 cm.

Sculptural and droplet heels

This is where Aje’s design signature is clearest. The Elan Asymmetric Droplet Heel in Gold pairs an asymmetric leather strap with an ankle strap, an organic metal buckle and a high sculptural metal heel. The Eternal Sculptural Heel Sandal has an almond toe and a padded leather toe strap over a sculptural heel, in Ivory, Chocolate and Black. The Earthen Heel Thong is all leather (upper, lining and sole) with a sculptural droplet heel and a shaped footbed. For a softer version, the Isadore Low Heel sets a low droplet heel under a coastal wash denim upper, and the Edra Mid Heel pairs a pointed toe with a droplet feature heel.

Strappy and evening heels

The Liora family is the classic strappy sandal. The Liora Strappy Heel comes in Gold and Black with an ankle strap and buckle, textured hardware and a padded footbed. The Liora Strappy Buckle Low Heel moves the buckle to a back ankle strap and comes in Ivory and Black. Alongside them, the Aventura Heel is a square-toe evening heel at a listed 9 cm, with a square toe, flower hardware and a leather padded footbed, in Black, Champagne Gold and Ivory.

Mules

Ten of the heeled pairs are mules. The Saint Heel Mule is the lowest heel Aje lists in the range at 6.5 cm, with organic gold ring hardware. The Aestra Plaited Mid Heel is a 7 cm mule with a plaited strap and a woven padded insole. The Zanthe Open Toe Heel Mule and the Alina Wedge Mule both sit at 9 cm. The Carmena Ruched Mule Heel and the Mirage Woven Sculptural Heel both have pointed toes. Our full breakdown is in the Aje heels guide.

What are Aje slides and sandals like?

Slides are the second biggest group, at 16 pairs across eight families, and they are where Aje’s hardware shows best because there is so little else on the shoe. All 16 sit in flip flops and slides.

  • Anais Slide: the most colours of any Aje shoe on Coveti (five: Chestnut and Natural, Olive and Natural, Black and Natural, Tan and Natural, Chocolate). A recycled nylon upper with a square toe, an Aje logo detail and a leather sole. It is also the one style that runs to EU 42.
  • Gathered slides: the Solana Gathered Slide, the Clemence Slide and the Cezanne Slide, all 100% leather, each in Black and Ivory.
  • Hardware slides: the Alina Slide and Alina Stacked Slide (organic hardware, shaped footbed, rubber sole), the Zanthe Slide (western buckle, Amber Croc), the Macy Buckle Slide (oval Aje buckle, square toe) and the Clara Slide (organic square hardware).

All four sandals are chunky and adjustable. The Spencer Buckle Sandal comes in Black Croc and Amber Croc with western buckle hardware. The Renata Sandal has double western buckles, a Velcro back strap and a rubber sole, in Black and Antique Rose. Read the full comparison in our Aje sandals and slides guide, and shop the group in designer sandals.

Does Aje make flats, trainers and boots?

Yes, though in small numbers. There are five ballet flats in three families, one trainer and one boot.

The Navina Suede Ballet Flat has a double strap, organic buckle hardware and an adjustable fit, with a suede leather upper, a leather lining and a leather sole, in Tan and Black. The Carmena Ruched Ballet Flat carries the same ruched upper as the Carmena mule, flattened, with an elasticated topline and organic gold hardware, in Python and Black. The Macy Ballet Flat is the outlier: a black nylon mesh and leather upper with an adjustable buckle strap, a leather lining and a leather sole. Browse them in designer flats.

The Valli Lace Logo Trainer is Aje’s single sneaker in the range, in Ivory Velvetine (90% leather, 10% cotton) with lace-up closure, a lace detail and statement Aje letter branding. The Finn Slouchy Boot in Brown is a long leather boot with a fixed slouch, a pointed toe and a 4.5 cm heel finished with a metal heel cap engraved with the Aje logo.

What are Aje shoes made of?

Leather dominates: 54 of the 61 pairs Coveti carries are leather. Aje’s sourcing standard is that its leather comes from Leather Working Group accredited sources, and the brand bans fur and exotic skins. That matters when you read the shade names. Amber Croc and Black Croc are croc-embossed leather, and Python is a python-look finish on leather. None of them is reptile skin. More on the brand’s standards is in Is Aje sustainable?

The construction details worth knowing come straight from Aje’s product notes:

  • Full leather builds: the Earthen Heel Thong and the Aestra Plaited Mid Heel are leather on the upper, lining and sole. The Zanthe Slide is the same.
  • Rubber soles: the Alina Slide, Alina Stacked Slide, Renata Sandal and Liora Strappy Buckle Low Heel use rubber soles.
  • Padded insoles: Clemence, Clara, Saint, Zanthe mule, Solana and Cezanne list a padded leather insole; Aventura and Liora list a padded footbed; Aestra has a woven padded insole.
  • Non-leather uppers: the Studio Thong Heel (100% PU, with gold Aje Studio branding), the Isadore Low Heel (cotton denim, leather lining), the Anais Slide (recycled nylon) and the Macy Ballet Flat (60% nylon mesh, 40% leather).

What sizes do Aje shoes come in?

Aje sizes its footwear in EU sizes, and almost every style runs EU 35 to 41. The Anais Slide is the exception at EU 35 to 42. Coveti lists exactly the sizes Aje makes, and the guidance on every Aje shoe page is to take your usual EU size.

As a generic guide, EU 36 is a UK 3, EU 37 a UK 4, EU 38 a UK 5, EU 39 a UK 6, EU 40 a UK 7 and EU 41 a UK 8. Our Aje shoe size guide has the full EU, UK, US and AU table, plus advice for half sizes, pointed toes and adjustable straps.

Which Aje shoe should you buy first?

Start from what you will wear most, then let the occasion decide the heel.

  • For one pair that works with most of the wardrobe: the Clemence Gathered Heel in Black. It has the widest colour run of any Aje heel on Coveti, a listed 7 cm heel and a padded leather insole.
  • For weddings and events: the Aventura Heel in Champagne Gold at 9 cm, the Liora Strappy Heel in Gold, the Elan Asymmetric Droplet Heel. Pair them with a gown like the Cristallina Embellished Gown and see Aje wedding guest dresses.
  • For summer and holidays: the Anais Slide for walking days, the Solana Gathered Slide for dinner, the Spencer Buckle Sandal when you want something chunkier.
  • For work: the Saint Heel Mule at 6.5 cm, the Navina Suede Ballet Flat, the Finn Slouchy Boot in cooler months.
  • For a statement: the Carmena Ruched Mule Heel in Python with charms and tassels, the Mirage Woven Sculptural Heel with double braided straps.
