Bogner Knitwear: Cashmere, Norwegian Knits and Ski Jumpers
Bogner started out selling Norwegian knitwear in its Munich ski shop in 1932, and knits are still one of the house’s strengths. The collection runs from cashmere jumpers to Norwegian-style knit jackets and virgin wool roll necks. These are the Bogner knits we would buy, and how to wear them on and off the slope.
Norwegian-style knits
The Norwegian pattern, with its yoke of stars and bands, is the most recognisable Bogner knit. The Ingrid Norwegian-Style Cashmere Jumper in Camel, Brown and Orange is cashmere with a ribbed roll neck. The Carolyn Norwegian-Style Knit Jacket in Black turns the pattern into a zip knit jacket that works as a mid layer. For more on patterned knits, see our Fair Isle and argyle guide.
Cashmere and wool
For a plainer knit, the Camila Cashmere Jumper in Light Blue is cashmere in a soft light blue, and the Vaiana Pure New Wool and Cashmere Jumper in Off White is a wool and cashmere jumper that layers under a coat. The Larissa Virgin Wool Turtleneck Jumper in Off White is the virgin wool roll neck to wear with ski trousers in the evening.
Knit jackets and cardigans
Bogner’s knit jackets sit between a cardigan and a jacket. The Lotta Virgin Wool Knit Jacket in Off White is virgin wool, and the Tanja Virgin Wool and Cashmere Cardigan in Navy is a wool and cashmere cardigan for town. Shop cardigans.
Can you ski in a Bogner knit?
On a sunny spring day, a wool knit over a base layer is enough. On colder days, wear it as your mid layer under a shell. Our guide on how to layer for skiing covers the details, and women’s ski sweaters has more picks.
Care
Hand wash cashmere and wool cold, then dry flat. Fold knits rather than hanging them so they keep their shape.
How to tell good knitwear from average
Feel the yarn first. Good cashmere is soft but not fluffy straight off the shelf, because heavily brushed cashmere pills quickly. Look at the seams: on a well-made jumper the sleeves are linked to the body stitch by stitch, so the seam lies flat. Check the ribs at the cuffs and hem, which should spring back when you stretch them. Bogner’s virgin wool and cashmere blends, such as the Tanja Virgin Wool and Cashmere Cardigan in Cream, are knitted tight enough to hold their shape after a season of wear.
Building a winter knit wardrobe
Three knits cover most of a winter. A fine roll neck in a neutral colour layers under coats and ski jackets. A patterned Norwegian-style jumper carries the evening. A knit jacket, like the Jana Knit Jacket in Navy, replaces a blazer at the weekend. Add a knitted trouser such as the Josie Knitted Trousers in Cream and you have a full knit look for the chalet.
