Felt Bags: The Wool Handbag Guide, From Polène Felted to Bouclé

A felt bag is a handbag made from wool that has been matted, knitted, looped and pressed into a dense, soft surface, and the best of the new season’s designer felt and wool bags pair that fabric with leather handles, bases and trims. The Polène Felted Edition is the clearest example this winter: four models in three shades, each cut from knitted wool fabric of 78% wool and 22% polyamide and finished in full-grain Italian calf.

This guide explains the main wool textures you will meet on a winter bag, compares the four Polène shapes side by side, and shows which other houses handle felt, bouclé, cashmere felt and teddy well. For the full background on the new line, read the companion Polène Felted Edition explainer.

What is a felt bag?

Classic felt is a non-woven textile. Wool fibres are worked with moisture, heat and friction until the scales on each fibre lock together, which gives a fabric with no grain, no loose threads at the cut edge and a slightly springy hand. Felt holds a shape well, which suits a structured bag.

In fashion the word now stretches further. Many bags sold as felt, including the Polène Felted Edition, are made from a dense knitted wool rather than a pressed sheet. Polène describes its version as knitted wool fabric shaped by the fully fashioned method, so the panels are knitted to the exact dimensions of each model before assembly instead of being cut from a roll. The result reads as felt to the eye: matte, close and soft.

Wool does not show the small scuffs that smooth leather picks up, and it sits comfortably against knitwear. The trade off is care, covered further down.

Felt, knitted wool, bouclé, cashmere felt and teddy compared

Five wool surfaces dominate the winter bag edit.

Knitted wool

Knitted wool is built from interlocking loops, so it has a little give and a soft, rounded edge. The Polène pieces add hand-sewn stitches that hold the draped wool in shape, and the Cyme family carries hand-linked edges with a horseshoe cable stitch that the house presents as a nod to ready-to-wear. The Cyme in Felted Mist Bag shows the effect best, since the pale grey-beige wool makes every stitch line visible.

Cashmere felt

Cashmere felt is the luxury end of the category: cashmere fibre worked into a dense felt cloth with a soft nap. Gabriela Hearst uses it on the Nina, and the Nina Bag in Chocolate Cashmere Felt and the Nina Bag in Ivory Cashmere Felt are the two shades to compare.

Bouclé

Bouclé is woven from a looped yarn, which gives a nubbly, three-dimensional surface. The Demi Bag in Camel Cashmere Boucle from Gabriela Hearst puts cashmere bouclé on a leather bag shape, while the Accenni Small Wool Boucle Pasticcino Bag in Black puts wool bouclé on the Max Mara Pasticcino. Dolce & Gabbana brings the same yarn to the Sicily in the Medium Sicily boucle handbag.

Teddy

Teddy is a deep pile with a curly, plush surface, and on a bag it is the warmest look of all. The Small Teddy Boston Bag in Camel is the obvious match for a camel coat, and the Small Wool and Alpaca Teddy Boston Bag in Medium Grey gives the same shape in a cooler tone. The Max Mara bags guide sets these against the house’s leather shapes.

Woven wool and tartan

Flat woven wool sits closest to suiting cloth. The Sicily medium chevron wool handbag from Dolce & Gabbana and the Puzzle 10 Tartan re-edition bag in wool and classic calfskin from LOEWE both use pattern, chevron and tartan, to make the wool the point of the bag.

The Polène Felted Edition: four felt bags compared

Polène bags come from the Paris house founded in 2016 by Antoine Mothay with his siblings Mathieu and Elsa, and the Felted Edition arrives on two of its best-known silhouettes, the Cyme and the Mokki, each in a full size and a mini. The three shades are Anthracite Black (charcoal wool, black leather), Ebony (dark brown wool, espresso leather) and Mist (pale grey-beige wool, matching leather). The figures below are as the brand lists them.

Model Dimensions (W x H x D) Weight Leather Lining Carry
Cyme Felted 45 x 32 x 17 cm 954 g Smooth full-grain Italian calf Not published by the house Hand, elbow, shoulder
Cyme Mini Felted 35 x 24 x 13 cm 548 g Smooth full-grain Italian calf Not published by the house Hand, elbow, shoulder
Mokki Felted 32.5 x 24.5 x 11 cm 934 g Textured full-grain Italian calf Cotton Crossbody, shoulder, hand
Mokki Mini Felted 27 x 13.5 x 11 cm 644 g Smooth full-grain Italian calf Cotton Crossbody, shoulder, hand

The Cyme is the felt tote of the group, wide at 45 cm and deep at 17 cm. The Cyme in Felted Ebony Bag is the one for a brown and camel wardrobe. The Mokki is the hands-free choice with a crossbody option, and the Mokki in Felted Ebony Bag is the only model here on textured calf. For model detail beyond the felt, see the Polène Cyme guide and the Polène Mokki guide, and the head-to-head Cyme vs Mokki comparison.

Felt handbags and felt purses: the smaller shapes

Searches for a felt handbag and a felt purse usually mean something compact, a bag for a phone, cards and keys.

The Cyme Mini in Felted Anthracite Black Bag measures 35 x 24 x 13 cm and weighs 548 g, the lightest of the four Polène Felted bags. It carries in the hand, on the elbow and on the shoulder, and the charcoal wool over black leather is the most discreet of the three shades. The Mokki Mini in Felted Mist Bag is the crossbody purse of the edition at 27 cm wide, and the pale Mist shade lifts a dark winter coat. The Mokki Mini in Felted Anthracite Black Bag gives the same shape in the darkest tone.

Elsewhere, the 3.5 handbag in bouclé from Dolce & Gabbana brings bouclé to a handbag, and the Nina Bag in Ivory Cashmere Boucle is a soft alternative to the cashmere felt Nina above. For a knitted look with colour, the Demi Bag in Earth Multi Crochet Cashmere brings crochet cashmere to the Gabriela Hearst Demi; the Gabriela Hearst verdict covers the house in more depth.

Felt tote bags and wool tote bags

A felt tote bag is the most useful wool bag for daily life, as long as the base and handles are leather. Wool on its own wears quickly where it meets a desk, a car seat and a coat, so a leather frame carries the friction.

The Cyme is the Polène answer. At 45 x 32 x 17 cm it is the largest Felted model, and the brand lists hand, elbow and shoulder carry. Weight matters on a big bag: the Felted Cyme is 954 g against 900 g for the textured leather Cyme, so the wool adds very little. Patou offers wool and cashmere totes; the Tote bag in Winter Mocha wool and cashmere and the Tote bag in Winter Slate wool and cashmere sit well with a long coat. For pile instead of flat wool, the Tmarin Medium Teddy Marine Bag in Camel from Max Mara is the teddy alternative.

For a year-round work bag, the best work bags for women are leather, and the designer tote bags edit has the full range.

How to care for a felt bag

Wool needs gentler handling than leather. Polène’s care notes for the Felted Edition are a sound template for any wool bag:

  • Never machine wash, never tumble dry.
  • Do not rub a stain. Apply a dry cleaning foam with a soft brush.
  • Keep the bag away from water, greasy substances, perfume and cosmetics.
  • If it gets wet, dab off the excess with a soft cloth and let it air dry.
  • Dark and new clothes can bleed dye onto pale wool, so take care with Mist against raw denim.
  • Avoid rubbing the wool against other fabrics, which causes premature wear.
  • Do not overfill, and store the bag in its dust bag.

Polène also offers a paid repair service on request. More generally, a soft clothes brush lifts dust from felt and bouclé. Suede shares many of these rules; the suede bags guide covers the overlap.

Felt and wool bags around the world

United States

In the north east and the Midwest, wool bags work from October to March, and Anthracite Black hides city grime. The brand lists boutiques in New York on Broadway and in SoHo, and a Chicago space on Oak Street has been leased.

United Kingdom

British winters are damp more than cold, so a wool bag with a leather base is the sensible choice. The brand lists a boutique in London, and Ebony suits the camel and navy coats of a British winter.

France, Germany and Europe

Paris is home ground: the brand lists boutiques on Rue de Richelieu and the Champs-Élysées. In Hamburg, where Polène lists a boutique on Neuer Wall, and in Copenhagen, the cold dry spells suit wool well. The brand also lists a Milan boutique on Via Manzoni.

Japan

Tokyo winters are dry and bright, a kind climate for wool. The brand lists a boutique in Minami-Aoyama, its first in Asia, opened in 2023.

Australia

Seasons run the other way, so felt bags come into their own from June to August, mostly in Melbourne and Canberra.

The Gulf

In Dubai, Riyadh and Doha, winter evenings between December and February are cool enough for wool, so a felt Cyme Mini works as an evening bag.

Felt and wool bags: common questions

What is the Polène Felted Edition made of?
