The Polène Cyme Mini is the compact version of the Cyme, one of the most searched Polène bags: in leather it measures 33 cm wide, 22 cm high and 13 cm deep, weighs 625 g and comes with two handle sizes, 40 cm and 60 cm. A new Felted Edition version, 35 x 24 x 13 cm and 548 g, joins it this winter in three wool shades.

Polène Cyme Mini vs Cyme: the size difference

Polène describes the Cyme Mini as a compact sculptured tote with waves, folds and curves, and gives it the same two-way design as the full-size bag. The name comes from the French word “cime”, a peak, a mountain crest, after the ridge that runs along the top.

The leather Cyme is listed at 38 cm wide, 32 cm high and 17 cm deep, at 900 g. The Cyme Mini is 33 cm wide, 22 cm high and 13 cm deep, at 625 g. So the Mini gives up 5 cm of width, 10 cm of height and 4 cm of depth, and is 275 g lighter. Height is the biggest change, which is why the Mini looks wide and low beside the taller Cyme.

What fits in a Polène Cyme Mini?

Polène publishes exterior dimensions, not interior capacity, so any packing list is an estimate. What the numbers do support is this. The leather Cyme Mini is 33 x 22 cm across its face, which is slightly larger than an A4 sheet at 29.7 x 21 cm. The curved, folded sides take up some of that space, though, so a flat A4 folder is not something the published figures guarantee.

Depth is 13 cm, against 17 cm for the Cyme. The removable interior pocket is 20.5 x 12 cm, a useful measure for anything flat you want kept separate. Polène also warns against overfilling its bags in its care notes, which applies to the Mini more than most because of its sculpted sides.

Handles: 40 cm and 60 cm, and how to carry it

The leather Cyme Mini comes with two handle sizes, 40 cm and 60 cm, and Polène lists three ways to carry it: by hand, on the elbow, on the shoulder. The longer handle is the one for the shoulder; the shorter suits the hand and the crook of the arm.

The design itself works two ways. Open, it is a basket, the sides spread and the handles on the outside. Closed, it becomes what the house calls a floral bag, with the sides tucked in and the handles crossing on the inside. A magnetic closure holds it shut.

Leather vs Felted Cyme Mini

The leather Cyme Mini is made in certified textured Italian calf with a 100% velvet microfibre lining. Polène’s leather bags are made by artisans in Ubrique, Andalusia; the Felted Cyme Mini, by contrast, is made by artisans in Italy, according to the house.

The Felted Cyme Mini pairs knitted wool (78% wool, 22% polyamide) with certified smooth full-grain Italian calf. Its panels are made by the fully fashioned method, shaped to the exact dimensions of the Cyme Mini. It is listed at 35 x 24 x 13 cm and 548 g, so it is lighter than the leather version by 77 g. The Felted product page does not list handle lengths, a pocket, a closure nor a lining.

The brand lists New York boutiques on Broadway and in SoHo, with a Chicago space leased on Oak Street. On a city commute the 60 cm handle keeps the Mini on the shoulder under a winter coat.

Polène lists a London boutique. In a damp British winter the leather Cyme Mini is the practical everyday version, since the brand advises keeping the felted wool away from water.

France

Paris holds the flagship on Rue de Richelieu and a boutique on the Champs-Élysées. The Mini’s low, wide shape works as a compact day bag between metro and office.

Germany and Europe

The brand lists Hamburg on Neuer Wall, Milan on Via Manzoni and Copenhagen. In cold, dry northern weeks the Felted Cyme Mini comes into its own.

Japan and Asia
